The week is almost over! Yvette is our oldest Ring-tailed lemur and knows all about taking time for herself and enjoying the sunshine. This position known as ‘sun-worshipping’ helps them warm up by absorbing heat from the sun through their thinner belly hair!
The Aye-aye is a distinctive and unique species of lemur and the largest nocturnal primate in the world.
Aye-ayes can be found only on the island of Madagascar and due to its specialized traits and distinctiveness from other primates, the aye-aye is included in its own family, genus and species.
There has been much dispute as to where exactly to place the Aye-aye taxonomically due to its odd conglomeration of traits.
The study of social behavior of the Aye-aye is still in its preliminary stages and much remains unexplained.
Aye-ayes are predominantly found alone and rarely interact with other Aye-ayes outside of their mating period .
Many people native to Madagascar consider the aye-aye an omen of ill luck. For this reason they often have been killed on sight. Such hunting, coupled with habitat destruction, have put aye-aye populations at-risk.
Today they are protected by law.

Bamboo Lemur in Ranomafana National Park.
We had such a great day in Ranomafana National Park. The group had the chance to photograph tree frogs, lizards, snakes and the main event, the Bamboo Lemurs.
We spent a lot of the morning talking about how capturing unique images in wildlife photography is 90% about predicting the animals behavior. In pursuit of a jumping lemur shot, we followed some Indri along a valley. Noticing that they were all following exactly the same route, I took everyone further ahead to watch what the first Indri was doing. We then sat and waited for the rest to follow on and some of the group managed to capture Indri flying mid-air between branches. In situations like this, it can be difficult resisting the urge to take photos myself, but it was so rewarding seeing how excited everyone was with the shots they took! Here’s a quick shot of a Bamboo Lemur that I managed to sneak in between giving tuition! They have such expression full faces. I shot through some bright green sunlit leaves to create the out of focus bokeh foreground.
