I’ve been both eagerly anticipating and sort of dreading reading this! I always have this small fear, when author’s return to their worlds in books, that it will somehow ruin all the good feelings of the previous books. .
Today I’m on the @penguinteen
blog tour and laying out all my feelings for you. “Map of Days” starts off right where “Library of Souls” finished, so if you thought this was maybe a spin off, it is not. This is a direct continuation of the Miss Peregrine’s trilogy and we get to explore Peculiardom in the United States (which is a mess) and we get to learn more about Abe Portman and what he was doing here. .
“Map of Days” really knew how to amp itself up over the course of the book. In the beginning it was fun just to get back into it and see how everyone was doing after the events of “Library of Souls”. And even as discoveries and new mysteries began to unfold, it remained at the enjoyable plodding pace where I was having fun being back in the world and learning all the new things, but it wasn’t really thrilling me. .
Around the last 200 pages, after all the reintroduction and set up was in place, things really started to get interesting. The politics and the lawlessness of Peculiardom in the United States was frustrating. Miss Peregrine was frustrating. ALL THE CHARACTERS WERE FRUSTRATING! But, not in the way that I was hating it, in the way that you start to see a big shift coming and changes to get excited about. It felt like Ransom Riggs was starting this internal bomb that was going to explode and shake up the series in a way that I was living for. Instead of that small fear that I would be upset if he changed things up, I started to feel hungry for that. .
The final few chapters! I just have to say, I’M HERE FOR IT! (It also looks like a small detail from the film was incorporated.)Anyway, I’m honestly thrilled and excited to see where this story goes, and it was fun to be reminded just how cool the idea of him writing a story around real old photos he’s found is.
