Why do we compare our lives with that of others?
I am certain that if we were all to describe ourselves, no two persons will have a similar description. Our names, shapes, sizes, weight, complexion, diction, our achievements, background et.c. are not the same.
God created us and made each of us different, special and for a divine purpose. We are unique and special in our own right!! So why do we fall into the comparison trap?
We hear of a high school colleague who just launched his/her own business and instead of being genuinely happy, we quickly compare their life with ours (the part we know) and the jealousy starts. We start wondering why they could successfully start their business while we have been struggling to start ours for some time now.
In all of this, we fail to reflect on our personal journey and we do not remember their journey to the present, the story of how they got here ... Unknown to us, he/she(the high school colleague) had been secretly jealous of you as well, in respect of a different aspect of your life. Perhaps your family, job, status etc
Henceforth, when you catch yourself in the comparison trap, just stop, be genuinely happy for the other person and consciously remind your self of your achievements...
Count your blessings instead, practice gratitude, be happy... .
Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~ MELODY BEATTIE
