The revival of #citrus
trees and fruit has been made possible with a collaborative Project (ACIAR, PARDI2, University if Sunshine Coast) with aims to increase the economic and disaster resilience of citrus in #Tonga
DID YOU KNOW that Citrus fruits such as sweet oranges and mandarins used to grow in abundance in Tonga until they were wiped out by the Tristeza Virus during the 1970s?
Over the years we have become reliant on imported #lemons
, and #oranges
of different varieties.
As Tonga heads into the cooler months – we start to see local #mandarins
and oranges at the market and roadside stalls – these come mainly from ‘Eua.
Its nice to see these locally grown fruits being made available, but it is seasonal – and a short one, and over the years there has been a steady decline in volumes and quality due to a number of factors. Hence our reliance on imports.
This much-needed research project is encouraging on a number of levels.
Imagine the #biodiversity
in Tonga’s fruit bowl with more #locallygrown
citrus being available?

Opening day for the Downtown Windsor Farmer’s Market was a phenomenal success!! Vanessa and myself are still high up in the clouds from all the uplifting energy, the friendly faces, and the strong community vibes (or maybe it’s because we’ve been up since 4am)! We absolutely LOVED chatting edible landscaping, organic farming, and home gardening with you all, and feel like we’ve made some great new friends here in Windsor. Thanks to everyone who picked up some seedlings, farm veg, and planters from us today. We loved sharing our hard work and passion with you. And to all of our fellow market community members, volunteers, vendors, and coordinators... you guys ROCK! @urbfrmrgreen @dwfmarket @dwcc_windsor

~ Local Honey ~ .
One of the things that makes me proudest of my products, are the amazing local artisans I get to incorporate. @beewildbuzz
is a honey company bringing raw, unfiltered, wild north Georgia Honey locally to Atlanta. I use their Orange Blossom Honey in my two honey sweetened granolas Turmeric Ginger & Honey Roasted Coconut and it enhances the flavor adding amazing floral notes as well as adding the health benefits of eating from local pollinators. .
John the founder has been wonderful to partner with and I'm delighted to have him at my upcoming Know Your Foodshed - Made Local class @thelearningkitchenatl
June 2nd 3-5PM. His knowledge of bees, honey, infusions, whole foods and supporting local is extensive. It's a treat to get to have him at my class but to also get to work with his products! I've already been playing with recipes for a honey vinaigrette garden salad, crostini with chevre, honey fudge, and honey gin cocktails. Hope you can make it to taste these sweet eats!! 🍯🐝🤤 .
Like so many we've had some weather related challenges the last couple of weeks. We've got a new web post up about it. Direct link in our profile or https://sixfigsfarm.com/record-heat-no-rain
We started by growing cut flowers, but soon realized that we're growing much more than that. What we're actually doing is growing some really important messages, like thank you for taking care of our baby, I'm sorry for the loss of your four legged friend, I'm so glad you were born 88 years ago, I don't have any words-but I want you to know that I'm thinking of you, congratulations on finishing college, get well soon, I love you, happy anniversary, and many more. The messages you send to the people you love are unique, intimate and important, and we feel privileged that you invite us to be part of these special moments.
This little girl had her first swim today and she did so well! Not gonna lie, Mama got a little teary eyed...How did she grow so fast?

We're looking for one more person to join this dirty and hard working crew! If you know someone who's interested in growing awesome food, working outside and farming with us this summer, put them in touch.
