// The Northern lights over the island of Austvågøy, in the Lofoten archipelago, Norway.
The otherworldly aurora borealis, or northern lights, begin high in the Earth’s atmosphere—at altitudes from 60 to more than 250 miles—when charged particles from the sun🌕 become trapped in the Earth's magnetic field.
The result is a colorful, dancing light show. The Lofoten Islands are draped across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. This rare wilderness outpost offers an untrammeled landscape of majestic mountains, deep fjords, seabird colonies, and long, wave-swept beaches.
