Coming up next week at Scandinavia House, join us for the new series "Lumberjacks and Logrollers: Icons of Finnish Cinema"! Organized by Dr. Vito Adriaensens from @columbiaschoolofthearts
, this survey of Finnish lumberjack films, created during the 1920s onward, showcases Finland's rich history of the logging tradition, and its importance in developing a national identity following its 1917 independence.
The series kicks off next Wednesday, February 23 with "The Lumberjack's Bride" (pictured here), which follows the conflict and drama that ensues following a tragic lumberjack rafting accident. Next Friday, we'll be screening "The Song of the Scarlet Flower," which was the first truly Finnish adaptation of Johannes Linnankoski's iconic novel about a charming woodsman drifter.
The series continues January 30 & February 1 with the classic lumberjack buddy comedy "Two Old Lumberjacks," followed by the genre-bending film "The Day the Earth Froze," which is loosely based on the Kalevala.
