USTA Long Island,"Noah could play Federer in the 2nd round!
Merrick’s Noah Rubin came through 3 tough rounds (beating 2 seeds) of qualifying matches to secure his spot in this year’s 2017 Australian Open! Last night in the 3rd and final round of qualifying, Noah crushed Evgeny Donskoy of Russia, 6-2,6-4 in just over an hour.
This is Noah’s 2nd consecutive Aussie Open Main Draw appearance. Last year Noah earned the reciprocal Wild Card (by winning the the USTA Wild Card Challenge). Each of the Slams offers a reciprocal wild card to each of the other countries who host Grand Slams.
Noah made good use of his wild card last year when he took out then world ranked #18
(17th seeded) 6’5” Benoit Paire of France in straight sets (7-6,7-6,7-6) before falling to another Frenchman, Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the 2nd round.
Noah will play friend and fellow American, Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round of play in the Main Draw. Their match is scheduled to be the 4th match on Court 10 after an 11am start Monday(7pm Sunday night NY time). So Noah and Bjorn will play after 2 women’s and 1 men’s match. The men are best of 5 sets. (Best guess is a starting time of between 2-3am NY time).
In their most recent meeting this past Fall, Bjorn edged Noah out with a 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-3 victory. The winner of their match will most likely play Rodger Federer in the 2nd round. Roger will be playing Jurgen Melzer of Austria, in the 1st round. Melzer also came through qualifying. #GoNoah #LongIslandProud
