TONE UP... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There seems to be a little confusion when it comes to the term 'Tone up'... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For a particular body part to look 'toned' you basically need to decrease body fat to show off the muscle and maybe increase the muscle a little to make it pop. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This can be achieved in many different ways, not just 15+ reps using light weights. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So if your goal is to tone up I would recommend you concentrate on losing some body fat through eating a little less (calorie deficit) and working out using weights (growing/maintaining your muscle). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And that's what toning really comes down to. lactose intolerant friends look away it’s about to get CHEESY 🧀 yesterday was my account’s 1 month bday, and also the day that I hit 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ followers 🙊🎉 - obviously to some this is not a lot, but being the girl that always used to flop at guessing the number of jelly beans in a jar I really can not comprehend this number of people 🙃 - starting this page was genuinely just for lols, it gave me something to do and motivation to drag myself out of bed and reach my goals. but being told that I’ve helped someone lift weights for the first time, or having girls tag me in their workouts to let me know they did my video, it genuinely makes my heart burst daily and has given this page a whole other purpose. Follow @roballenfitness for more fitness/nutrition info 😊 . You know that gradual tightness and soreness you feel after a workout? It starts usually around 12 hours after you’re done and peaks about 36-48 hours post workout? Going down the stairs is tough, sitting down is painful? Ya that soreness. What causes this? . It used to be believed that this soreness was the result of an accumulation of lactic acid. An acid seems like it would burn, right? Well that’s not the case. For starters, lactic acid doesn’t even build up in your muscles. It’s lactate. And lactate is flushed out pretty quickly after exercising - so then what could it be? . When your muscle does something abnormally stressful (could just be a different or much heavier exercise) it undergoes a level of micro trauma. Your body’s natural response to damage is to begin the inflammation process and stimulate pain receptors. This can last several days depending on the individual and the level of damage. . This is what’s known as Delayed Onset Muscular Soreness of DOMS. It’s very rarely something to be concerned about, however, if it lasts more than 5 days you should consult a health professional as a precaution. . DOMS can happen to anyone, even someone who works out regularly. It’s often the result of a new exercise and/or a heavy eccentric contraction - eccentric contractions can hold a greater load (You can bring a barbell down to your chest slowly but be incapable of pressing is back up) . Should you be trying to always get this feeling? In actuality the answer is both, as they have carry over to each other in benefit you in your fitness goals. Lets go over some of the details of each training style. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As far as weight goes of course for strength you will be working with a heavier load and then for hypertrophy style training, its moderately heavy loads. Don't mistake hypertrophy training for light weights as that is not the case. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So I like to incorporate both training styles and the way you alternate through them is individualize on your preference. My example style of training is to do upper, lower, upper, lower split with one week being strength and the next being hypertrophy. You can also alternate days for these styles of training as well as alternating within that day of the workout. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For example, you would strength train with the bench press exercise in the 1-6 rep range and then afterwards when your programming is calling for accessory movements you can switch to hypertrophy rep range. I tend to stick to all my compound movements in the strength range. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Really there's no set rules to how you alternate the two, the most important take away from these styles is that your training involves having both of them as they have great carrying over into getting stronger and having improved endurance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you made it this far please comment below "HYPER" or "STRENGTH" as it helps me to see that I'm making a difference in your fitness goals. How many rest days do you take a week? . Rest is so important, but if I’m being honest it’s something that I still struggle with. Working out has become such a habit to me that sometimes when I don’t workout I feel guilty or like I’m going to lose progress.🤦🏼‍♀️ . Our bodies build muscle and change while we are RESTING and working out too vigorously can often lead to more harm then good. Even though I know these things, I still have to force myself to rest. *rolling my eyes* 🙄 . It doesn’t have to be full force all the time and I just wanted to give a little reminder to those who need it, I know I do! . I hope you all have a great Saturday and take some time to rest! I will be 😴 on my couch for the next few hours if ya need me.✌🏼❤️
Drum roll............ 🥁 • The best exercise in the world for burning body fat is... Whatever exercise you enjoy the most and can do CONSISTENTLY 📆. Simple as that 🙌🏻. • I get asked this one a lot and it all comes down to consistency. Let’s be honest, if you don’t enjoy something then you’re less likely to do it on a regular basis. • Whether it’s weightlifting 🏋🏻‍♂️, running 🏃🏻‍♀️, boxing 🥊, swimming 🏊‍♂️, cycling 🚴🏼‍♀️, or even just walking 🚶🏻‍♂️, it doesn’t matter. If you've put in the time, you will retain all your muscle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now in the mindset you may experience that you've lost some momentum but don't worry you are still making progress and the body doesn't gain fat in the process either, most of you if you've followed me for some time know about the TDEE and that your body at rest also burns calories. If you've been tracking your total daily expenditures you'll find out that the body not only burns calories in the gym but also at rest. Just keep to the course stick to your caloric intake and macros and all will be just fine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A rule of thumb for me is to not miss more than three sessions in a row in a week, I know life gets in the way sometimes and that's the inevitable, after a couple weeks away from the gym is where you may experience some strength loss from inactivity but yet again don't feel discouraged if you've been after for some good amount of time, just get back on the horse and saddle up as muscle memory and retention is also on our side for fast recoveries and strength gains. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope this helps! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you made it this far please comment below "CHILL" as it helps me to see that I'm making a difference in your fitness goals. That’s after they leave a beleaguered comment on this post, complete with 12 uses of the word ‘insulin’ and a link to a 2011 study conducted on field mice. - - But for rational human beings, including level headed keto dieters, this comparison highlights some farcical concepts of the ketogenic diet. Apart from proven benefits to those with epilepsy, it is mainly used by individuals who want to lose fat. - - Erroneous claims of the Ketogenic diet are plentiful; ‘consuming fat burns fat’, carbs inhibit fat loss’, and my personal favourite; ‘you can lose fat in a calorie surplus whilst executing a fully fledged ketogenic diet.’ - - Given the demise of rationality and evidence based practice in the fitness industry, it is hardly surprising that a theory which rips up 7 billion years of evidence keeps prevailing. Further perplexing statements such as; ‘because of insulin response, carbohydrates store more fat’ are as deluded as believing this avocado bun won’t slide around in your hands like a BMW in the snow. - - Such pro-keto/anti-carb beliefs would therefore assume that the ‘keto burger’ (and high volume of cheese & streaky bacon) is automatically better for fat loss. When eating out locally and also partaking in the "salad bar" ha! 28 day aged filet and grilled shrimp. Swipe for the "salad"... I did get a few questions from the curious side of the family. With my wife ever so bored with my speaking about diet, I simply said I'm in a ham and cheese mood 🤣. No one can argue with my results as they've seen me change over the last year and a half. Most are shocked when they see that I really don't diet or restrict calories. I simply eat meat for the most part. I do enjoy challenging people's fixed ideas and beliefs. But one thing is certain, nutrition ranks up there with politics and religion in terms of dinner conversation avoidance. Each to his own. Not sure how many calories you should aim for? Over the past month have you lost, maintained or gained weight? If you’ve lost weight, keep the calories the same. If you’ve maintained, drop it by 300-500 a day. If you’ve gained then drop it by 500-700 a day. After a month re-evaluate . The scales only tell us part of the story when it comes to tracking our weight/fat loss progress... ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Hydration status 💧 Menstrual Cycle 👩 Pre/post toilet 💩😂 Time of day ☀️🌜 Food/fluid intake 🍽 ⬇️⬇️⬇️ All of these factors could interfere with what you're seeing on the scales and can ultimately lead to you feeling disheartened.
