Palm Beach was established in the 1890’s when Henry Morrison Flagler built two luxury resort hotels, the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers Hotel. Flagler was a key figure in the development of the Atlantic coast of Florida. He was such a powerful man that he had a doctor friend of his declare his second wife, Ida Alice, insane and she was institutionalized in 1896. He then began an affair with a woman named Mary Lily. He reportedly gave her more than $1 million in jewelry over the next few years. In 1899, the papers started to openly question his affair. Flagler bribed the Florida Legislature and Governor to pass a law that made incurable insanity grounds for divorce, opening the way for him to remarry. Flagler was the only one to divorce under this premise and the law was repealed in 1905. Of course, a spouse's mental incapacity was later restored by the legislature as a grounds for dissolution of marriage, and remains the law of Florida today. But it sounds like Florida has our very own Henry the VII, now doesn’t it. .
