The 5th of October 2018 was a happy and memorable day for many Congolese around the world. They shared, celebrated, and expressed their thoughts and support for the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr Denis Mukwege who was awarded the prestigious award alongside Nadia Murad. This was an exciting day and a day of celebration because usually when you see or hear anything in the news concerning DR Congo it is usually something negative and heartbreaking most commonly the ongoing War, Rape and Sexual Violence, Ebola and so on.
I came across Doctor Denis Mukwege’s name last year when I was researching possible dissertation topics. His story is worth telling and the world needs to hear it because not only does it inspire but it also gives hope.
Born in Bukavu, South Kivu Province, Dr Mukwege is the chief gynaecologist in Panzi hospital, a hospital which he founded back in 1999. Fast forward almost 20 years later he is still working tirelessly with staff to heal women who’ve been victims of Wartime Rape and Sexual Violence in the Congo
Despite his attempted assassination in 2012 he (Dr Mukwege) continues to provide care for women from all ages in Panzi hospital. His compassion, kindness, willingness, and desire to help the helpless women who have been subjected to brutal assaults is a selfless and noble act one which we should aim to follow.
This is a well-deserved award because Dr Mukwege has dedicated his entire life to healing women not just physically but also psychologically and emotionally. In a patriarchal country where women are treated as second-class citizens, with little to no rights and no hope for the future, Dr Mukwege has been speaking against Wartime Rape and Sexual Violence and standing up for survivors and women in general, not just in the Congo but everywhere. He truly is a role model and a hero who inspires not only the people of Congo or Africa but the entire world. He is a beacon of hope for us all.
