What an amazing weekend I've had. As well as the Earth Day art exhibition yesterday, I spent Saturday listening to some excellent speakers talk about butterflies, bees, penguins and our declining wildlife due to climate change, pesticides, loss of habitat etc. I also got to meet two of my nature writing heroes, Dave Goulson and Patrick Barkham, who kindly signed my books and posed for photos with me!
Some facts: Did you know that 75% of crops (including chocolate and coffee) and 87% of flowers need to be pollinated by insects? And that we've lost 97% of our meadows? Neonicotinoids are more harmful than the banned DDT pesticide, so a partial ban isn't enough. Also, just one drop of flea treatment on your pet is enough to kill 60 million bees - and imagine if that washes off into a stream, lake or river! And - this shocked me - the plants you buy (70% of those that are classed as 'pollinator friendly') from garden centres are already contaminated with pesticides and so will affect/poison your bees.
There's a lot out there to read more about this, but I'd definitely recommend Dave Goulson's 'A Buzz in the Meadow', along with his other books.
Many thanks to @sustainablesta
for organising a great event!
