Today is the rare day I would actually want a fire place living in the CHS. Emphasis on RARE
Why fireplaces are the most overrated thing you can add to your home (especially in Charleston)???…. While it’s a nice to have with the advent of central heat/air it’s a total non-essential. Having built, renovated and sold homes of my own and helped clients buy, design and sell their homes, a fireplace tends to be one of the least used features if you live here. Sure we get a few cold days, but it’s rare you’d even think of using it for more than 300+ days of the year (it was legit 70+ degrees 2 days of last week).
As someone that looks at houses often the cons become obvious. Fireplaces (in an avg size home) tend to limit the living space available or forces you to pop a TV (that will regularly be over heated/stop working) over top of it whether that makes sense or not. If you’re building, not only is a fireplace going to increase your cost, but adds another portion of your home that has a greater likelihood to result in a leak or exposure to the elements. In an area known for moisture problems in homes, it’s simply not worth the increased risk/maintenance for the couple days a year you think you’ll get use out of it.
Now that I’ve literally rained on your parade and played fireplace grinch, go get that starter log or pile of amazon boxes and get your pyro on 😉

It was here before us and it will be here after us. The Angel Oak on John’s Island is 400 years old and expected to live to around 900 years old
Artwork makes a great gift, because like John Keats said, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever"

Yessss. This quote has been on my Facebook bio since 2005ish. Just came across it again and thought it was a good one to share. It’s definitely the season of giving, but giving goes beyond the holidays. 🎄🎁 Quote by: Winston Churchill
