As of last month, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) has decided to make reading for inmates much harder. Going forward, books and publications, including legal primers and prison newsletters, cannot be sent directly to incarcerated Pennsylvanians. Instead, if they want access to a book, they must first come up with $147 to purchase a tablet and then pay a private company for electronic versions of their reading material — but only if it’s available among the 8,500 titles offered to them through this new e-book system. In case you forgot: Incarcerated people are paid less than $1 per hour, and the criminal-justice system disproportionately locks up low-income individuals. Adding insult to injury, most of the e-books available to them for purchase would be available free from Project Gutenberg." @washingtonpost #injustice #prison #incarcerated #lowincome #education #rehabilitation #criminaljustice #books #recidivism #politics #vote #getInvolved #read #schooltoprisonpipeline #knowledgeispower

"Every year, thousands of people in Pennsylvania prisons write directly to nonprofit organizations such as the one I co-chair with a request for reading material, which we then send to them at no cost. This free access to books has dramatically improved the lives of incarcerated individuals, offering immense emotional and mental relief as well as a key source of rehabilitation. But as of last month, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) has decided to make such rehabilitation much harder. Going forward, books and publications, including legal primers and prison newsletters, cannot be sent directly to incarcerated Pennsylvanians. Organic produce or conventional... Which one is better? Honestly, neither one is superior to the other. The “Dirty Dozen” is bogus, and here’s why: 🔸It wrongly implies that some organic produce is superior to conventional. (It’s not) 🔸It instills fear. 🔸It assumes that organic produce doesn’t have pesticides. (It does) 🔸It’s making it difficult for the general population (especially those of lower income) to reach their recommended intake of fruits and vegetables. 🔸Pesticides are tightly regulated on a federal, state, and local level. They undergo rigorous testing to ensure public safety. 🔸If you’re worried about pesticide residue, just wash your produce with tap water or checkout the Pesticide Residue Calculator on SafeFruitsandVeggies.com So stop worrying about the “Dirty Dozen”. Whether you personally choose to buy organic or conventional is your choice, both are great. Just remember to eat more fruits and veggies. We should be eating more of them, not less. Today, October 17th, 2018, is international day for the eradication of poverty. Placing number one on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, poverty affects around 1.3 billion people around the world. People living in poverty must struggle for not only income but also health, education and standards of living. However, clubs and organizations around the world such as MEDLIFE contribute to the eradication of poverty in local as well as international communities. On this day and everyday, we are one for the 1.3 billion. #medlifemovement #medlife #lowincome #poverty #unitednations #un #sustainable #peru #canada #montreal

#tbt #tossbacktuesday Here are some pics from that time...smiling faces but inside we felt like the last pic.... . Why? Why am I up early-ish? Why am I up late? Why am I hustling everyday? 🤷 when we moved to Iowa we had dreams and a plan. It came crashing down and we felt trapped in our situation. . Finances we're desperate and so were we. Ben considered the Marines. We were barely getting by....I am not just saying that. Our situation was "Hey God...I know you are taking care of us but I don't know how we are going to get through this..." And then meeting people like @emmybrownlivewellnourished And they give you all kinds of food goods and maybe she didn't know that it got us through but it did 😌🙏 😖 Shout-out to an amazing family support system❤️ we wouldn't have made it without you (Steve, Teri, bud and Debbie) ❤️ After a year God dropped an opportunity in our lap for Ben to work at our church and the pressure was relieved. Thank you God❤️💔 🎊 As we look to our future and change is on the horizon...I feel fear creeping up. Why? Because our situation will be the same. We are of course trusting God with our fears and future. Our mindset is different and we are working harder than before to have our family be stable. We never want to be back where we were 2 years ago 😌 🤔 This job is our exit strategy. I am working hard. My goals are front and center. My husband and I are on the same page and feel totally United and strong moving forward. 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨 *See stories for verbal story and perhaps a bit more detail . . . . #familyofsix #momof4 #wahm #sahm #homeschoolmom #momlife #financialstruggles #financialfreedom #workhard #consistency #courage #marriage #lovemyman #motivation #justkeepswimming #lowincome #

#Repost thank you for the story @npr with @get_repost #npr #opportunity @cityandstateny @bpericadams #effectivehousingpolicy for #lowincome #affordablehomeownership #notaffordablehousing ・・・ 1. Audra Palacio was born in the Linden Houses, a public housing structure that houses thousands of families close to the Brownsville neighborhood in Brooklyn, N.Y. She now works for New York City Housing Authority, and is pursuing a master's degree. 2. Audra’s mother Ruth Palacio (from left), Audra’s sister Shantel Palacio, Audra’s father Peter Palacio and Cyril Castillo greet a neighbor outside the Palacios' home in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, N.Y. 3. Shantel Palacio and Maliah Jones, 7, at their house in the Nehemiah homes. The Palacios passed their Nehemiah home on to Shantel and she is pursuing a Ph.D. in education policy. When the Palacio family moved out of the Linden Houses, they didn't just get a backyard. They shifted their future, like a ship changing course. A lot of factors determine a child's success: having a mom like Ruth Palacio, tough but loving, is definitely one of them. But can moving from one block to another truly determine a child's future? The University of California opened its doors in 1869 with just 10 faculty members and 38 students. Today, the UC system includes more than 238,000 students and more than 190,000 faculty and staff, with more than 1.7 million alumni living and working around the world. From all backgrounds, ethnicities and incomes, UC attracts the best and brightest. UC undergraduates come from all over California, and they work hard to make it to college. In fact, over 40 percent of UC students come from low-income families. • • • • • #ucsystem #highereducation #highered #collegeaccess #lowincome #collegechangeseverything #realitychangers

Minimising when you have a family can seem daunting. How do you decide what to get rid of when it comes to your kids things? They aren't YOUR belongings... Its important to remember that, you have control. Its your house! (And your partners if you have one, of course) The buck stops with you. My children are only three, but from where I stand I see that with under 3s, you have total control of what of their stuff to keep/cull. If you have kids in this age group, now is your chance to get to a comfortable level of belongings, so that it will become their norm and you can encourage them to maintain it as they get older. Toys you dont think are useful, they dont play with, aren't age appropriate or aren't quality - pile them up. Clothes that dont fit, are ratty, you dont like or just have an extreme excess of, pile those up too! Sell, donate, or bin depending on their state. For those with kids above 3, you still have most of the control. Lead by example. Downsize your/household stuff first, explain what and why you are doing it. Get them involved. Eg: explain to them why you are choosing to donate 15 coffee cups so that you are left with a set of 6. If they're old enough, explain the concept of being minimal and why you are choosing it. Let the idea sit with them and after a bit of time, announce that you are going to help them go through their belongings. Use sense, start with things they dont often interact with, and don't expect big things. The first time they might find 5 items in their room they are ready to part with, but you've planted the seed. Do a declutter with them every 6 months. You'll achieve something new each time.
Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single family houses to highrise apartments for elderly families. There are approximately 1.2 million households living in public housing units, managed by some 3,300 HAs. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers Federal aid to local housing agencies (HAs) that manage the housing for low-income residents at rents they can afford. Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals. An HA determines your eligibility based on: 1) annual gross income; 2) whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status. If you are eligible, the HA will check your references to make sure you and your family will be good tenants. HAs will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other tenants or on the project's environment. Project Based Section 8 (PBV) housing is a government-funded program, authorized by Congress in 1974, that provides rental housing to low-income households in privately owned and managed rental units. These subsidies are provided to the owners of certain mortgaged properties based on a Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) contact. The “Contract Administrator” is the entity that manages Section 8 HAP contracts. This can either be HUD or a “Public Housing Agency” (PHA). As defined under applicable HUD regulations, a "Public Housing Agency" is any State or local governmental instrumentality that is authorized to engage in or assist in the development or operation of housing for low-income families. HAP Contracts specify the number of units in a particular mortgaged property for which Section 8 assistance will be provided. Under the HAP Contracts, HUD provides Section 8 rental subsidies to the project owners in an amount equal to the difference between the HUD approved rent (the "Contract Rent") for a particular assisted unit and the HUD required rental contribution from eligible tenant families. The Housing Act prescribes as the requisite tenant rental contribution an amount equal to the greatest of (i) 30% of the tenants' family monthly adjusted income, (ii) 10% of the tenants' family monthly gross income, and (iii) if the tenant family receives welfare assistance from a public agency and a portion of such assistance is adjusted in accordance with the family's actual housing costs, the monthly portion of the welfare assistance so adjusted. For Section 8 assisted units for which the cost of utilities is not included in rent, the tenant rental contribution includes the amount of HUD's estimate of the average monthly cost of utilities and other services (excluding telephone) for the unit in question (the "Utility Allowance"). If you're ready to bring minimalism into your life, there's one most important thing to remember. Intent is key! Being minimal means something different to everybody. Simply because - everybody is different! Two ways intent will help you at the start of your journey to decluttering and living more simply... 1. ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR WHY. What made you decide to embrace this lifestyle change? Tired of the house always being trashed? Tired of feeling like you're overwhelmed by the sight of 'stuff' in your house? Focusing on why you intend to become more minimal is the first step to succeeding at it. 2.BECOME INTENTIONAL. About what you bring into your house. Do you NEED the item? Or do you just want it? If you're ready for the journey - use today to find your why. Focus on what you intend to achieve by changing this aspect of your life. And... drop every excuse you have to the side. If you want it, it can be done. 👏
Getting things organised for our first ever holiday as a family. We have planned an impromptu get away for next week. One night at this stage but maybe 2, dependant on what my hours at work look like! Just somewhere on the Yorke Peninsula where I used to go as a child. We already have 2 tooth brush holders, so I got 2 more for the kids. We still have a bit we plan to buy but most of it is a one off start up, but if it goes well we will try go there once a year.
When people think of living minimally, they usually think of people with clear, white, clinical looking houses. THIS IS NOT MINIMALISM. Minimalism comes in all different shapes and sizes, and its all relative to your lifestyle and how much you currently own. Think about if you removed 10% of your belongings from your entire house. For example, if you have 100 items of clothing, you choose to let go of 10 items. Its not much. A pair of worn out jeans, a dress that no longer fits, 4 pairs of shoes that are impractical, a hat you never wear and 3 scarves that are out of style. Its not much. But, now your wardrobe is more minimal than it was before you started! You've done it! You've become a minimalist! Its important to remember that its a journey, not a destination. You might not be able to let go of much initially. But you will learn more about what you do and dont need to keep in your life. Take a chance. Look on google for a konmari checklist. Do one round of your house. See if you suprise yourself. Then, continue to cycle through your belongings until you feel you've reached the happy medium for yourself and your family. .... yes, hubby might JUST need to keep the mountain bike he never rides, just incase he wants to ride it one day. But that just means that to him, one mountain bike is minimal. And, that's OK.

Hold on! One day soon you will laugh about the process! It too shall come to past! Welcome back to my series "Buying your Home Using Section 8." I get this question asked all the time "what If I don't want to to buy a home in the same city where my section 8 is issued from? Well 1st you have to use the knowledge you already have for example you know there is a porting out process right? Call the Housing Authority in the city where you want to buy and ask them are they "accepting porting from your housing authority city?" 2nd Ask them do they have the Home Buying Program there? & how to get in ask about their rules (some require you to be a resident in their city for 6 months to a year) Note (same for city 1st time home buyer loans) check with them too! if you get this far. Note: & from my experience I was able to port out and buy a home in another city and never went to that housing program because i went though the process from a "Non-Profit organization" (Email me for referrals) I say this time and time again to my readers "If you know the play book (Read) then you will know how to play the GAME! Get it! Re-position your mind! To their level of thinking! Now about Lenders who can give a section8 holder a home loan. Well If your Housing Authority is offering the program they will know. And if they don't (Email me) Non-profits are such a good resource for credit repair, home buying workshop for the home buying education "Certificate" (Go back read my previous posts) I end this series with this "my up coming Book will have more details on all my post "The Guide To Home Ownership for Low Income Renters" will be a blessing to so many I claim it will! But for now just Email drea@firsttimehomebuyerninja.comIf you would like me to post a subject comment below I am taking request! Blessing to all!
Lately, everytime I see a post about decluttering or minimalism, there's always mums in the comments who are saying they wish they could become minimalist but they have kids so its too hard or can't be done etc. If this is you & you truely DO wish you could downsize and minimise even though you have kiddos - keep reading! This is for you! I'm also going to post a series over the rest of October targeting my tips for certain 'trouble areas' I see alot of mums unsure about. Its important to remember that minimising is a journey, not a destination. You don't go from the average household to textbook minimalist in one round of decluttering. You also don't have to get rid of EVERYTHING to be a minimalist. At the start of your journey, the most important thing is to be mindful. Go through the house room by room. Ask yourself 'do I/we/they really need this? Are we using it? Might we use it?' If the answer is no, sell/donate/throw it away. It can be extra daunting to get rid of things when you have kids at home, and your disposable income might not be the greatest it can be. But, you'll be surprised how much you realise that you just DON'T need everything. Be reasonable at first. Be a little lenient with what you allow yourself to keep. Remember that you considered donating something and reconsider it on declutter round 2. If you want something, you can achieve it over time - no matter what it is! And if minimalism or minimising is what you want, I challenge you... pick one room of your house and get started. Just one room. See where it takes you!
