Shoes. Currently the #AverageAdvocate
are collecting shoes for @the_well_path
to help them fund a home for survivors of human trafficking. .
Although I love The Well Path's vision (reducing the chance those who come out of being trafficked go back to the life without the proper support), I am kinda also interested in how this works as a fundraiser. They are raising funds through @funds2orgs
and it rather blows my mind I've never heard of them, as this is kinda a pet passion of mine (ex. #thelbdproject
Point being, everyday ordinary people can raise funds for their thing, simply by collecting all the shoes. Which is great, as shoes need to be recycled, reused, etc...anyway (yes, I grew up in CA) and not just for environmental reasons, because it reduces demand on unfair labor and labor trafficking. In addition, this org uses these shoes for job creation, reselling then where there is demand to reduce poverty. .
So, in recap, they seem like a sustainable way to address a lot of things:
1.) Help a local org (in this case, helping bring freedom to modern slaves)
2.) Helps reduce a negative environmental impact
3.) Provides good development through job creation.
4.) Reduces extreme poverty
5.) Gives ordinary people, like us, a ridiculously easy way to do something good
6.) Is a solution for one of our problems (what do we do with this crap?!) Helping us be more minimalistic (and therefore have a greater satisfaction with life).
Sounds good, right?
I think so. But you might have to give me your shoes first so I can really test it out :) .
