gender equality & inequality around the world// pt.1— @supty_snc
———————————————————————— “I have travelled across the globe to loads of places and it will be fair to say, that in many places I have observed the lack of equality.
Starting with the worst, when I had travelled to Dubai just after my trip to Italy, I must say that I was mildly astonished and even disgusted. Having had arrived with many expectations, I was honestly led down by the behaviour that welcomed us in the place. A man approached us, with brochures and cruise offers and suddenly had the audicity to ask my father whether my sister and I were his wives; when my father disgustedly refuted, he proceeded to ask my father of he had only one wife because apparently, in there, only men were allowed to have 4 wives while women were not. Now I will not proceed to say that religions allow this outrageous sexism to occur because I respect all religions but that won't stop me from saying that this is a bad practice. Teaching muslim men to 'own' four wives while their sisters are suppressed and not given the same rights is not a healthy practice for any child. Then, I proceed on to India. In this place, I have noticed that most of society blames women for not covering themselves up rather than blaming the gawker when one gets raped, more commonly known as victim shaming. How can we expect the nurturing of powerful women when they are being taught that one should not speak about sexual assaults on them as it might ruin their virtue in the eyes of society? How can we build up a society which thrives on equal rights when the victim is punished instead of the sinner?
Now when I say this, I will not be leaving my country out of this. One thing that I have observed in the south asian culture is that women, are considered as only child bearers and food makers; now as much as that is true, that women have been granted these talents, females are much much more than homemakers and it is about time, that our culture acknowledges it. Also, abusive relationships in which women are trapped are not taken seriously in these regions and that is one problem that should be taken into account.” #feminismblessinterviews
