Character Learning #0016
MEANING: Small, little .
Ancient versions of the character 小 [Xiǎo], or small, used to be three small dots (which have since become elongated). These were perhaps meant to represent tiny pieces - and tiny (small, little) is exactly what this character represents! For character #15
, we learned 大 [Dà] (or big). Just like 大 [Dà], 小 [Xiǎo] will be a very important adjective/modifier going forward. In fact, by knowing these two characters, you already know a new word! In Chinese, words are sometimes single characters, and are sometimes a combination of characters. the combination “大小” [Dàxiǎo] means “size”. Imagine you are trying on a new dress. When you ask “what’s the size?”, what you’re really asking is how big (大) or small (小) it is! ***
