With the largest confirmed specimen measuring just over 40 ft in length and tipping the scales at more than 20 tonnes, there is no bigger fish in the ocean than the whale shark. Although usually solitary creatures that spend most of their lives in the open ocean, these huge filter-feeding animals are known to congregate in significant numbers at a few select locations around the world. . For decades scientists have been attempting to determine what links these “aggregation sites”, but a recent study authored by a team from the @uniofyork and @m.w.s.r.p has put forward a convincing hypothesis. Each one of the sites features warm, shallow water near a sharp drop-off in the seafloor that leads to deeper water. . Supervising author Dr. Bryce Stewart explains: "Sharks are ectotherms, which means they depend on external sources of body heat. Because they may dive to feed at depths of more than 1,900 metres, where the water temperature can be as cold as 4 degrees, they need somewhere close by to rest and get their body temperature back up.” . One of the 20 or so whale shark aggregation sites around the world can be found in the waters off the coast of Djibouti, a tiny coastal nation located on the Horn of Africa. By joining professional underwater photographer Joshua Barton – whose image is featured here – you can swim alongside these gentle giants this December. BBC Blue Planet videographer Patrick Dykstra (@pictureadventure1 ) is one of our longest-serving specialist leaders. He’s taken our clients as far afield as Norway, Dominica, California and Sri Lanka in search of the world’s largest creatures: whales. We count ourselves incredibly fortunate to have worked with Patrick on some of our most memorable marine safaris. Here’s what he has to say about our partnership: . “Working with NWS really changed my life. Knowing that you can fill basically any trip that I can dream up and run is incredibly liberating. I probably wouldn't have been able to work on Blue Planet 2 or other projects if it wasn't for this support. NWS are awesome. I look forward to more great trips going forward.” . Although our 2019 trip to Dominica is now sold out, there are still opportunities to swim alongside sperm whales with Patrick in 2020, when we’ll be returning to the waters of the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean” for the third time. Galápagos finches are one of the more famous residents of the Galápagos Islands, the remarkable diversity of their beaks partly inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. The skies above the Galápagos are rich in wildlife – as are the islands themselves – but there are plenty of reasons to dive below the waves here as well. . Sea turtles, sea lions, sharks, rays, countless fish species and even penguins can be seen in the waters surrounding the Galápagos. With the possibility of staying in land-based accommodation or on board a luxury yacht, you can tailor your Galápagos experience to yours or your family’s tastes. Earlier this month, @telegraph journalist Martin Fletcher (@fletcher6305 ) travelled with NWS to Nosy Be, an island off Madagascar’s northwest coast that is fast becoming a whale shark hotspot. . The world's largest fish spends most of its time in the open ocean, but individuals are known to congregate near land in significant numbers at a few select locations around the globe. Recent research identified 85 different whale sharks near Nosy Be in the space of just four months . Martin joined @_stelladiamant and the rest of the @madawhalesharks team as they plunged beneath the waves, swimming alongside these gentle giants in crystal-clear waters. By clicking the link in our bio, you can find out more about the species and book your place on one of our whale shark safaris to Djibouti or St Helena. In 2018, NWS client Mario fulfilled a lifelong dream by swimming alongside the largest animal to have ever lived: the blue whale. For him, taking to the water alongside these colossal cetaceans was “the journey of a lifetime”… . “It’s hard to explain how wonderful the experience of swimming with blue whales is. When I had my first sight of one of them, I just cried and laughed, it was so exciting. I could do that for my entire life, and I just couldn’t get enough. It was the greatest experience that I have ever lived!” . Out of all the animals that a traveller would wish to see in Svalbard, the humble walrus would likely sit far down the pecking order. They are not great beauties like the Arctic fox; they do not possess the same mystique as a beluga; and they certainly don’t inspire the awe that comes with a polar bear encounter. But these tusked and moustachioed pinnipeds have a charm all their own, which you can see first-hand on one of our small ship expeditions beyond the Arctic Circle. Stella Diamant is a marine biologist who spends her time between Madagascar and her home country, Belgium. In 2015 she left her job in plastic pollution to further research whale sharks in Madagascar, a country she is very familiar with following a work stint with WWF in 2011. Initially a wild guess, Stella quickly realised that Nosy Be was a key feeding area for the endangered whale shark; she eventually procured the support of the Marine Megafauna Foundation to run a first pilot season in 2016, deploying satellite tags to track the sharks. . Stella founded the Madagascar Whale Shark Project following the success of the pilot season, and since 2018 has been dedicating her time exclusively to the project, setting up an educational programme for local children, recruiting Malagasy staff and implementing a code of conduct in Nosy Be. To date, Stella and her team have identified more than 300 different whale sharks. Stella’s findings and achievements have been widely shared in international media, including the BBC, The Telegraph, Mongabay, Lonely Planet and Diver Magazine. Stella currently is working on her data from the 2018 season, while scaling up the project and spreading the word about Madagascar’s incredible wildlife .To read more about Stella’s organization and the work they do in Madagascar, click the link in our bio . In terms of biomass, the Great Sardine Run that occurs every year along the eastern coastline of South Africa is thought to rival the Great Migration of the Masai Mara and Serengeti, which involves millions of wildebeest, zebra, antelope and other large herbivores. No-one quite knows how many sardines are involved in this marine migration, but their colossal shoals produce a feeding frenzy that provides food for a number of species, including sharks, seals, penguins, dolphins and even whales. You may think that locking eyes with a polar bear in its natural habitat is a situation you want to avoid; not so for NWS specialist leader Chase Teron, who recently returned from a voyage to Svalbard on board the 6-cabin M/V Kinfish. “These encounters create a bond not only between you and the wildlife and the land,” says Chase, “but also with who you share the experience with. To experience a little bit of everything that South Africa has to offer, you can hardly do better than to drive the Garden Route along the coastal road between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It is an extraordinary journey with ever-changing scenery and all manner of different things to do. One day you might be whale spotting at Hermanus - renowned as one of the best whale watching locations in the world - and the next you could be learning about the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, handling antique weapons and scrambling over the British and Zulu positions. #ThisIsAfricaExclusive #WorldOceansDay . . . . . #hermanus #capetown #seascape #ocean #travel #africa #seaview #gardenroute #westerncape #indianocean #atlanticocean #whalewatching #whale #photography #southafrica #instagood #wildlife #marinelife #beautifuldestinations #ocean #southernafrica #visitafrica #southernrightwhale #loves_africa #luxurytravel #explore #marinesafari
“Already when getting ready to anchor we had walrus swimming around the ship in the clear water. The sun was shining under a cloudless blue sky. We got in the zodiacs and slowly made our way to the beach. We followed our guides' lead as we approached the group of walrus hauled out here at Poolepynten. As we got the closest we could get, we caught wind of the animals' unique smell. They didn’t seem to mind us, so we got to have a great look at them as they got in and out of the water, pushing each other and resting. A few of them were play fighting in the shallow waters, so we all sat down on the beach to observe them swimming and freely moving around in the water – quite a contrast to the resting group on the beach. It was amazing." . This is just one of the fantastic wildlife experiences that NWS clients enjoyed on our third Svalbard trip of the season, as told to us by expedition leaders Ben and Pernille. “Just before midnight as everyone was heading for bed, we spotted our first polar bear! What a way to start the trip. The light was some of the best light I’ve seen in Svalbard. As we approached the bear the wind blew snowflakes from the fast ice which were lit up beautifully by the backlight. “The bear was sleeping right on the edge of the ice as we slowly approached. The bear was very comfortable with our group there and we found our rhythm nicely on the boat, with everyone shifting and repositioning quietly so as not to disturb the animal. . “The low light hovered just above the mountain ranges, with wisps of cloud absorbing the colour of the setting sun and a slight breeze dusting the scene with snow. With the bear’s eyes open and the pads of his feet all bundled together, we were able to get some fantastic shots.” . "At 3pm we came across a large male hooded seal, a rare sight, and a smaller female resting on the ice floe. This sighting was particularly exciting because neither Nate nor Beau had seen this species in the Arctic in recent years, or even at all. You could tell how antsy everyone was because we must have had a combined 5,000 photographs taken in the short 15-minute session! The hooded seals were casually resting on the ice and made eye contact with us several times." . Happy #TurtleDay 🐢If you find yourself lucky enough to witness a female attempting to lay eggs, follow these steps to ensure the turtle is able to nest safely; 1) Keep still and remain at a safe distance of at least 3 metres. Movement may frighten the turtle and cause her to retreat back to the sea, where she is at high risk of drowning when tired. 2) Turn off all artificial light and do not use flash photography. Turtles navigate by natural light, and artificial light sources could both frighten and disorientate them. 3) Do not make any loud noises or attempt to touch her. 4) Slowly try to position yourself out of her range of vision. She cannot see behind her shell and there is less risk that you will frighten her. 5) Do not block her path back to the ocean. After nesting, the turtle will feel exhausted and insecure out of the water. She will want to return to the ocean as soon as she can. 6) Report any sightings of new nests to your hotel so that they can protect the area. • • • #LifesGreatJourneys #MahlatiniMoments #MarineSafari #Mozambique #Tanzania #Seychelles #Conservation
“The guides were already awake as we entered Van Mijenfjord, and within minutes two bears were spotted on the fjord ice at 3am. The midnight sun was low, shining on the snow-covered mountains, when the mum and cub were joined by a third bear. Initially we thought the mum and cub would run away, but instead they ran towards this newcomer. “To add to the excitement, the cub then started playing with the third bear, whom we later suspected was a cub from a previous litter. The three bears were jumping in and out of the water, taking turns chasing each other, and coming up close to the vessel!” This is just one of the fantastic wildlife experiences that our clients enjoyed on our first Svalbard trip of the season, as told to us by expedition leader @nate.small.photography , whose photo you can see here.
