Back up to one of my favorite views today. Staring out at the Matanuska it's hard to imagine life anywhere else.
When you're guide has to ask if you're claustrophobic before the climb... #tightspaces
I’ve been finding random photos on my hard drive and this is one of them 📷. I was in Palmer, Alaska in like a “Cheers” bar and Ms Alaska in her full sash and gown walked in 👑. I f n loved her! I can’t wait to go back @kaula_wena @searyder
When location, people, and weather align. 😍😍 Holy smokes. I have so many photos of @jocasta143
that I love and haven’t shared yet. I’m working on a blog with the story of what happened with my lenses and how everything unfolded along with the photos from the ice cave!! 😍 Stay tuned! @amazonfashion #founditonamazon
Annelie Bergstrom works her way up and out of one of the Matanuska Glacier's many cave systems. I first visited the Mat in 2005 to bone up on my ice climbing skills before heading off to explore glacier caves in the Everest region of Nepal. Having spent most of my life at that time living in Ohio, Indiana or Kentucky, I'd never actually seen a glacier before. I figured I should probably see at least see one glacier before climbing on and into some of the highest glaciers in the world. The Mat was accessible via a short rental car drive from the Anchorage airport, making it the cheapest glacier for me to visit. I made several trips annually after that first trip, during which we mapped a lot of caves. That research was featured in one of the chapters of my PhD dissertation on the hydrology of glaciers. I've been to some pretty cool places, but the Matanuska remains a favorite. #Alaska #glaciercave #speleology #cave #glacier #exploration #caver #caveresearch #pmiropes #matanuska #flashphotography #cavephotography #nikon #neverstopexploring #adventurephotography #glaciology
Opening day at @micaguides
got me stoked to be spending another summer on the Matanuska. Awesome clients in one of the coolest places. Would you trust your guide to lower you down over this deep blue lake?
Exploring new terrain in our backyard. Warren and Shannon brought their inflatable canoe up to Alaska so we decided to put it to use yesterday. After multiple ferries and miles of portaging gear and boat, some 3 or 4 hours later we managed to access the ice of the Matanuska from the Lion's Head side.
Today was magical. Alaska is my place. Our place. My soul is so happy in the mountains. 6 mile round trip, 1800ft elevation gain was a pretty good trek for my first legit postpartum hike. I carried Kayden on my chest the whole way up and down. We’ve been here a week, and I’m not sure the view will ever be old. #palmeralaska #alaska #matanuska #mountains #chugach #family
The only way to pop bottles of @moetusa
champagne in Alaska is on a glacier. Didn’t you know?
Katie can hardly refrain from swimming in such a beautiful place. Would you jump in on a warm summer day?
Scoping out new features on the Matanuska. Every spring we have new pools and lakes to explore as most of the drainages freeze up over the winter. Some will be around only a couple weeks, others may remain all summer. You never know what you're going to see out there from day to day!
The old ice cave got even cooler! It goes deeper, and gets more light from the outside than ever before. Unfortunately that means the walls are melting thinner, and once they open up the feature will rapidly collapse. Book a tour with @micaguides
before this thing disappears forever!
The first few days back at the Matanuska have been spent exploring. The terrain has changed significantly since last September and the crew at @micaguides
have been working to 'map out' a new route in preparation for opening day this weekend. We can't wait to get back to it! Come join us this summer and we'll show you all the cool things we're finding out here.
