Going to be trying something new here:
Every New Comic Book Day (or "Wednesday" to the laymen), I'm digging into my collection to recommend something. Anything. Trades, graphic novels, single issues, manga, even webcomics are all on the table here. I'll try to avoid the SUPER obvious stuff (yes, of course you should read Watchmen) so any comic fan can get something out of these posts. This will give me a fun routine to follow, allow me to gush about stuff I love, and give this Instagram account an ounce of purpose for once.
So on this #NCBD
, I want to begin by recommending probably my favorite limited run Marvel has ever offered me: Matt Fraction and @david.aja
I know a LOT of people in the comic crowd are well aware of this series, but I also can't think of a better book to get non-comic people into superhero comics. It doesn't lean so heavily on established lore or bombastic melodrama, instead providing an intimate character study of a man trying to do the right thing. And often failing at it. Fraction writes Clint Barton as a mess of a superhero in the most sympathetic of ways, reworking a C-lister into one of Marvel's most relatable characters effortlessly. Meanwhile, Aja works with the medium in ways that are so damn brilliant it's almost unfair.
Gritty in a way that isn't exploitive, hilarious in a way that isn't immature, filled with creative action sequences and breathtaking artistic direction, Hawkeye is nothing short of special. It's been 7 years since issue #1
was released, and Marvel still hasn't released anything close in terms of quality.
I need to wrap this up before I make an "it's a bullseye" pun.
