BREAKING: in a major turn of events, it seemed that Usman vs Covington seemed likely on the horizon but I guess plans change as they've now made Colby Covington (@colbycovmma
) vs Robbie Lawler (@ruthless_rl
Covington hasn't fought since he won that interim title that he'd latched onto until it was stripped from him after he didn't accept a fight against then champion Tyron Woodley. After suffering his first loss to Brazilian fighter Warlley Alves via Guillotine, Covington has been on a climb to top that ladder beating Jonathan Meunier by submission, Max Griffin via TKO, then took Dong Hyun Kim, Demian Maia and Rafael Dos Anjos all the distance. His record currently stands at 14-1 with his last fight being for the interim strap.
Lawler has been on an absolute surge since resurrection back inside the UFC. After falling short in a warzone against Johny Hendricks, he then went to town on Jake Ellenberger winning by TKO, annihilated Matt Brown, beat Hendricks for the strap in the rematch, had a HOF worthy fight against Rory MacDonald in which he got the stoppage in round 5, then went to war once again against Carlos Condit before getting the title took away from the powerhouse that was Tyron Woodley. He then beat Donald Cerrone and has more recently came short of Rafael Dos Anjos and controversially technically subbed from Ben Askren in March just past.
