Forgot one! Black History Comic Book Characters February 25- Nubia This one threw me all the way off. Nubia was created by Robert Kanigher and Don Heck. She made her debut in “Wonder Woman Vol. 1 #204 ” (January 1973). Brace yourself for this. Nubia is Wonder Woman’s long lost twin sister. She confronted Wonder Woman after Diana’s memory was restored by the Amazons. The two were evenly matched in hand to hand combat, so they began battling with swords. Nubia beats her and declares herself the one, true Wonder Woman. Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, formed two children from clay. The first was Diana and the second Nubia. Mars, the god of war kidnapped Nubia and Hippolyta never saw her again. Nubia was raised by Mars to destroy the Amazons, but she breaks the mind control and she and Diana defeat the god of war. Nubia’s abilities are super strength, speed, reflexes, senses, them hands, magical weaponry, and glistening, flawless dark skin. Coolest moment: Nubia fights a soldier on the Floating Island and defeats him. Instead of killing him, he tells the warrior, “A woman doesn’t destroy life, she cherishes it.” #Nubia #WonderWoman #blackwonderwoman #amazon #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 28- Spawn There was no way Spawn was getting left off of this campaign. Spawn was created by Todd McFarlane. He made his debut in his self-titled comic, “Spawn #1 ” (May 1992). Spawn would become the flagship title for Image Comics, with the first issue selling 1.7 million copies. Albert Francis Simmons was a highly trained U.S: Marine who had saved the President from an assassination attempt. He is then recruited by the CIA as a member of their black ops squad. On one of his missions, Simmons is betrayed and killed by his partner. Simmons goes to hell and makes a deal with an evil entity. In exchange for his soul, he will get to see his wife again. When Simmons returns to Earth, he learns five years had past since his death and he is now a creature with no memory of his past. When his memories return he learns that his wife married his best friend and they have a daughter together. Spawn later finds out that he is meant to be a soldier of hell, and spends the majority of the comic series fighting against his fate. Spawn’s abilities include superhuman strength, agility, and endurance, immortality, healing factor, teleportation, shape shifting, and other demonic powers. Coolest Moment: Spawn kills Billy Kincaid, a child killer who lured his victims into an ice cream truck. When detectives find the body, they find a note that says, “Boys screamed and girls screamed. So I made him scream, and scream, and scream...” #Spawn #AlSimmons #ImageComics #legend #Todd #ToddMcFarlane #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 27- Cloak Cloak was created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan. He is part of the duo, Cloak and Dagger. Both characters made their debut in “Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 ” (March 1982). When they debuted they were a instant hit, spawning several of their own mini-series. Tyrone “Ty” Johnson met Tandy Bowen when both were runaways. Tyrone is 17 with a debilitating stuttering issue and he ran away from home when his speech impediment kept him from stopping his friend from being shot by the police, after he had been misidentified as a robber. Tyrone met Tandy when a thief stole her purse and he retrieved it for her. The runaways are eventually kidnapped by Simon Marshall, who injects them both with a new synthetic strain of heroin. The two escape, but discover they now have powers. Cloak’s abilities include teleportation, intangibility, see the fears of those he touches, use his darkness to cause insanity and paranoia, and the creepy ass ability to transfer foes into the Darkforce dimension. Coolest moment: Cloak sends some thugs to the Darkforce dimension, with chaotic and horrifying results. #Cloak #CloakandDagger #Dagger #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 26- Falcon Falcon was created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. The character made his debut in “Captain America #117 ” (September 1969). Falcon was the first African-American superhero in mainstream comic books, and also the first black superhero not to have the word “black” as part of his name. Stan wanted to be at the forefront of how comics tackled the Vietnam War and civil rights, so her and Gene created Falcon and thought Captain America was the perfect comic for the character. Samuel Thomas Wilson was born in Harlem, New York City. Sam was raised by religious parents, both of which died due to circumstances in their community. Sam moved away and became “Snap” Wilson, a gang member and criminal. When Red Skull used the Cosmic Cube against Captain America, he altered history. This caused Falcon to forget his “Snap” Wilson persona and want to help others. Along with Captain America, Wilson creates the Falcon persona and pledges his life to fighting for those who can not fight for themselves. Falcon’s abilities include flight (by way of the wings on his suit), empathic link with his robotic falcon, and an expert martial artist. Coolest moment: Falcon becomes the new Captain America! #Falcon #SamWilson #CaptainAmerica #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters I know it’s a day late. Again, vacation! February 24- Nick Fury You know I ain’t talking about the Caucasian one. He’s cool, I’m talking about the Nick Fury who’s constantly cussing the Avengers out. (Black ass) Nick Fury was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Alfred. He made his debut in “Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #5 ” (August 2001). This version of Nick Fury exist in the Ultimate Universe, where, incidentally, Miles Morales (Spider-Man) is from. The character was modeled after none other than Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Fury in the MECU. Nicholas Joseph Fury fought for the United States in World War II. He was captured and experimented on, eventually getting injected with a serum that gave him super strength. His new abilities allowed him to escape and eventually he became the Director of S.H.I.E.LD. He assembled The Ultimates, a team of heroes tasked with dealing with superhuman threats. Also, Wolverine is his homeboy in the Ultimate Universe. Ultimate Nick Fury’s abilities include being a genius level strategist, slowed aging from whatever he was injected with, super strength, speed, and agility. Most importantly, he has the capability of not giving a damn and cussing everyone out. Coolest Moment: Nick Fury walked up to Thor and whispered something in his ear so devastating the hammer no longer thought he was worthy. He literally caused Thor to lose all of his swag. #NickFury #SamuelJackson #SamJackson #Shield #agentsofshield #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 23- War Machine James Rhodes was created by David Michelinie and John Byrne, but the War Machine armor was created by Len Kaminski and Hopgood. The character made his debut in “Iron Man #118 ” (January 1979), but he didn’t dawn the armor until “Iron Man #282 ” (July 1992). James Rhodes was a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps who served tours in Southeast Asia. He was stranded behind enemy lines when his helicopter was shot down by a Viet Cong Rockets. There, he meets Tony in a prototype Iron Man armor, and they both fight their way out. Rhodes and Tony would become friends, with James even replacing Tony as Iron Man when he had a relapse into alcoholism and again when everyone thought Stark was dead. After Rhodes helps Tony defeat some droids, Stark tells Rhodes to keep the War Machine suit. As War Machine, James would go on to become an Avenger as well as handle issues of homeland security for the United States government. The War Machine suit has some of the same capabilities as Tony’s standard Iron Man armor, with extra firepower by way of rockets and chain-guns attaches to the limbs and shoulders. Coolest moment: War Machine destroyed an entire fleet of Skrull ships. #Warmachine #Rhodey #Ironman #TonyStark #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 22- Bumblebee Bumblebee was created by Bob Rozakis, Irv Novicj, and Jose Delbo. The character made her debut in “Teen Titans #45 ” (December 1976). Some consider Bumblebee to be DC’s first black woman superhero, but this has been a point of contention with another DC character whom you’ll see in a few days. Karen Beecher is a scientist and girlfriend of Teen Titans member Herald. She secretly created her costume and alias in order to attack the Titans and help Herald look good. After explaining what she had done, the Titans offered her membership with the team. She and Herald eventually marry, and in time Bumblebee becomes a member of both Doom Patrol and The Birds of Prey. Her powers include the ability to shrink to the size of an insect, a suit that enables her to fly, and the ability to fire blasts from her hands. Coolest moment: On the Teen Titans show, Brother Blood tried to use mind control on Bumblebee, only for her to break free and tell him “There’s not a man alive who can tell me what to do!” #Bumblebee #teentitans #starfire #nightwing #titans #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 21- *Clears throat* SUPERHEROOOOOO STATIC SHOCK!!! Static was created by Milestone Comics founders Dwayne McDuffle, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek Dingle for the freakin CULTURE! The character was originally developed for Marvel Comics. His first appearance was in his own freakin comic, “Static #1 ” (June 1993)! When Milestone Comics shut down DC brought the character to their universe after the success of his animated television series, “Static Shock”, making him a member of the Teen Titans. The character was named after Virgil D. Hawkins, a black man who was denied entry into the University of Florida School of Law due to his race in 1949. Virgil Ovid Hawkins was born a metahuman, but his powers did not manifest until he was exposed to a radioactive substance while being in the crossfire of a gang war. When the company responsible for the chemical attempts to capture him, Virgil fights back and discovers the full range of his electromagnetic powers. He decided to use his gifts for good and protect his city from street gangs. Virgil is a prototypical geek, constantly visiting comic book shops and playing video games in his comics and on his show. Static’s abilities include electromagnetic generation, a strong scientific mind, technopathy, and telepathic resistance. Coolest Moment: On the episode “Static in Africa”, Virgil learns that his ancestry is of Ghana and he meets the god Anansi the Spider, who tells Virgil he idolizes him. #Static #staticshock #shock #blacklightning #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 20- Bishop Bishop was created by John Byrne and Whilce Portacjo. He made his debut in “Uncanny X-Men #282 ” (November 1991). He would go on to get 4 limited series comics which he starred. Bishop was born about 80 years in the Marvel future where humans and mutants joined together to battle the Sentinels, mutant-hunting robots who decided to take over the world. Bishop was taken in by Witness, the last man to remember the X-men when they were alive. He and his sister, Shard, joined Xavier’s Security Enforcers fought threats against mutantkind. Eventually, Shard would suffer a significant injury, leading to her consciousness being transferred to a computer matrix (the story is way deeper than that, so we’re going to keep it pushing). Bishop later finds himself in a battle with the evil mutant, Trevor Fitzroy. Fitzroy opened a time portal and Bishop chased after him, which lead to Bishop meeting and, after some time, joining the X-men. Bishop’s abilities include energy absorption and redirection and superhuman attributes. Coolest Moment: Bishop meets Witness in the past. Black History Comic Book Characters February 19- Steel Steel was created by Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanove. The character made his debut in “The Adventures of Superman #500 ” (June 1993). The hero was inspired by the folk hero, John Henry (whom the he is named after). Steel got his own series from 1994-1998. Doctor John Henry Irons was an engineer who designed weapons for AmerTek Industries. He quit designing weapons after he learned that one of them was used to kill innocent people. To escape the corrupt hands of AmerTek, he faked his death and moved to Metropolis, where he was saved by Superman. When Superman fought Doomsday, John attempted to help by grabbing a sledgehammer, but was buried under the rubble from their battle. After Superman died fighting Doomsday, a gang war started to control Metropolis. One gang was seen using weapons designed by Irons. In response, Dr. Irons created a steel suit to honor Superman and stop the gang war. In his solo series, Irons returned to his hometown, Washington, D.C., where he was discovered to be alive by AmerTek. The series covers his battle to take the corrupt weapons company down. Steel’s suit grants him super strength, durability, flight, other cybernetic enhancements, and he wields an indestructible sledgehammer. Unfortunately, nothing was cool about Steel in his movie, where he’s played by Shaquille O’Neal. Coolest moment: Steel gets a chance to take on a seemingly revived Doomsday, and holds up quite well in the battle. #Steel #Superman #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 18- Moon Girl Moon Girl was created by Amy Reeder, Brandon Montclare, and Natacha Bustos. She made her debut in “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 ” (January 2016). The concept for the character came from wanting to revive the “Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur” franchise. The creators wanted to make a character like Inspector Gadget, but cooler. The creators also wanted the character to be black and Marvel made only one request- that the character be a girl. Lunella Lafayette grew up loving to invent new things. Despite her high intellect, she is unable to get into better schools so she attends a public school, where she’s bullied. Lunella creates an invention that she later learns is capable of opening a portal when her instructor activates it by mistake. Creatures called the Killer-Folk emerge, followed by Devil Dinosaur. Lunella reveals her invention was meant to protect her from the Terrigen Mist, which is responsible for altering the biology of some people, giving them powers. Lunella and Devil Dinosaur form a bond and defeat the Killer-Folk. Later, Lunella develops the ability to switch bodies, even taking command of Devil Dinosaur’s body at one point. Coolest Moment: The aforementioned body swap with Devil Dinosaur. Black History Comic Book Characters February 17- Black Manta Black Manta was created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy. He made his debut in “Aquaman #35 ” (September 1967). Black Manta grew up in Baltimore, MD, and loved playing by the bay. He was often kidnapped and forced to work at sea, often suffering abuse by his captors. One day he saw Aquaman swimming and tried to get his attention to be rescued. When Aquaman didn’t see him, he grew angry and finally killed his captors. He developed hatred for Aquaman and how emotionless the sea is. He would eventually go through body enhancements, get a suit, and become Aquman’s primary antagonist. Black Manta abilities include being a skilled swordsman and martial artist, an expert engineer and tactician, and his suit gives him super strength and the ability to shoot optic blasts. Coolest Moment: Black Manta agrees to, and plays a significant roll in helping the super villains defeat The Crime Syndicate. #BlackManta #Aquaman #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 16- Batwing (David Zavimbe) Batwing was created by Grant Morrison and Chris Bumham. He made his debut in “Batman Incorporated #5 ” (May 2011). Batwing was mentioned in “Batman #250 ” when an African American boy tells his friends how he imagines Batman, later dubbing the character “Batwings”. The first Batwing, David Zavimbe, was a part of the Batman Inc. team, an organization created by Bruce Wayne made up of heroes in the Bat Family that assist him with fighting crime around the world. Zavimbe’s home-base is in Tinasha, writhing the Democratic Republic of Congo. Zavimbe was orphaned as a young boy when his parents died of HIV/AIDS. He was then taken into the Army of the Dawn by General Keita. When Keita asked David and his brother, Isaac, to kill innocents as well as a rival, the brothers refused. This leads to Keita attacking Isaac, and later David kills Keita. After he left the life of war, David became a police officer and swore to fight for justice. After Bruce announced Batman Inc., he came to David and asked him to serve as Africa’s Batman. David is an expert martial artist, has a suit that allows him to fly, and of course he has awesome Batman gadgets. Black History Comic Book Characters February 15- Spider-Man (Miles Morales) I love Peter Parker, but Miles is my DAWG! Miles Morales was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichelli. He made his debut in “Ultimate Fallout #4 ” (August 2011). He became the main Spider-Man in the Ultimate Universe (separate from the common Marvel universe), and people were NOT happy when he was first announced. Some detractors cried foul and thought the move was a publicity stunt and attempt for Marvel to be politically correct. However, when Stan Lee was told about Miles Morales, he gave glowing praise to the creators and was happy the children of color would have a new character to look up to. Bendis and Pichelli both acknowledge that Miles Morales was modeled after Donald Glover. Miles Morales was bitten by a radioactive spider in the home of his uncle (who’s The Prowler, but that’s a story we may get to later 🤔). He becomes Spider-Man some time after Ultimate Peter Parker dies heroically while battling the Sinister Six. His abilities include super human strength, speed, and agility, venom strike (a touch that shocks), spider sense, and camouflage. A version of Miles’ origin story can be seen in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, where he’s voiced by Shameik Moore. Coolest Moment: during the 2015 event, “Secret Wars”, Miles gives a hamburger to a villain because he was hungry. This one act of generosity leads to the heroes defeating God Emperor Doom. #Spiderman #Miles #MilesMorales #Spiderverse #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 14- Vixen Vixen was created by Gerry Conway and Bob Oksner. The character made her debut in “Action Comics #521 ” (July 1981). Vixen was originally set to be the first female African character to have her own series, but her comic was cancelled when DC stopped production of current and planned comics in 1978. Tantu, a warrior in ancient Ghana, asked the god Anansi to create a totem that would give the possessor the powers of all the animals to ever exist in the animal kingdom, but only if they would use their powers for good. Tantu used the totem to help others, and it was passed through his descendants. Mari Jiwe McCabe later learned of the totem. Her mother was murder by poachers, and her father was killed by his half-brother, General Maksai, because the general wanted the totem. Mari moved to America and became a model. She used her money to travel the world, eventually returning to Africa. She defeated her uncle when she gained possession of the totem, swearing to fight against evildoers as the hero, Vixen. Vixen can imitate the strengths of any animal. Most of the time she channels the weight and power of an elephant, the speed of a cheetah, and the constricting power of an anaconda. She some times channels prehistoric creatures as well. Coolest moment: That time she caught Amazo slipping and put a hole in him. #Vixen #animals #animalkingdom #africa #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 13- Erik Killmonger Erik Killmonger was created by two colonizers (kidding), Don McGregor and Rich Buckler. The character made his debut in “Jungle Action Vol. 2, #6 ” (September 1973). N’Jadaka’s father, N’Jobu, helped Ulysses Klaue attack Wakanda. When all was said and done, Klaue was defeated, N’Jobu was dead, and King T’Chaka banished anyone that helped with the attack on Wakanda. Although N’Jadaka was young, he was a part of the banishment due to the sins of his father. N’Jadaka changed his name to Erik Killmonger and swore vengeance against Wakanda. He eventually returned to Wakanda after a failed attack on T’Challa, resulting in his imprisonment. Eventually he breaks free, and ends up leading a village named in his honor. Killmonger is a skilled hunter, skilled hand to hand combatant, has protection against magical attacks, uses various technologically advanced weapons that are infused with Vibranium, has a Vibranium suit, and he has a badass leopard named Preyy. He’s played in the “Black Panther” film by Michael B. Jordan. Coolest moment: Killmonger defeats T,Challa and becomes the new Black Panther after the two fought in ritual combat for DAYS!! Second coolest moment: He beat Iron Man. Straight. Black History Comic Book Characters February 12- Superman (Calvin Ellis, Earth-23) Calvin Ellis was created by Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnk, making his debut in “Final Crisis #7 ” (March 2009). Grant Morrison stated that Ellis was modeled after Barack Obama. Initially the character went unnamed, leading readers to believe that he was meant to be Barack in the comics. This version of Superman wasn’t named until “Action Comics #9 ” (New 52). Calvin Ellis (or Kalel, as he was known on his version of Krypton) has almost the exact same origin as the Superman everyone knows. He crash landed on Earth after his parents sent him away from his dying home planet. He was found by a couple and raised to hide his powers from others. Where Calvin’s story differs greatly is he becomes the President of the United States, and the White House is his freaking base of operations! What’s even cooler is his assistant is Brainiac! Calvin has all of the powers of the main Superman (flight, super speed, heat vision, super strength, etc.). Coolest moment: Some heroes came from another Earth where their Superman was evil. He came through and Calvin DOG WALKED HIM!!! #Superman #CalvinEllis #Kalel #Krypton #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 8- Misty Knight Misty Knight was created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones. She made her debut in “Marvel Premiere #21 ” (March 1975). Misty was an NYPD cop until her arm had to be amputated after she survived a bomb explosion. After receiving a robotic prosthetic arm from Iron Man, she opened her own private investigation firm. She later became one half of Daughters of the Dragon with Colleen Wing. Misty Knight’s abilities include being a skilled martial artist, having near-perfect aim, technopathy (with the arm), super strength (with the arm), and control over magnesium (with the arm). She’s commonly associated with the “Luke Cage” television show on Netflix, where she is played by Simone Missick. Coolest moment: Misty beat the brakes of Typhoid Mary in the comics. I’ve attached the fight to this post. She kicked Rhino’s ass, too. #Misty #MistyKnight #DaughtersoftheDragon #dragon #netflix #netflixstudios #LukeCage #dccomics #dcmovies #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague ##avengers #blacksuperheroes #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 11- Riri Williams Riri Williams was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato, debuting in “Invincible Iron Man Vol. 2 #7 ” (May 2016). Although she has not been in comics for long, she made a huge splash when she replaced Iron Man for some time. Going by the name “Ironheart”, Riri protected citizens with armor she designed. Oh... She’s 15, by the way. Riri has a genius-level intellect and is a skilled inventor. When Tony Stark takes leave, her suit is accompanied by A.I. modeled after Stark. After several heroic feats, she is approached to join the “Champions” team, Young heroes who seek to protect the world the same way the Avengers do. Coolest moment- Hands down it’s the invention of the Ironheart suit. #RiriWilliams #Riri #Ironheart #Ironman #champions #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 10- Blade I wasn’t going to keep y’all waiting forever on this one... Blade (aka Eric Brooks) was created by Marc Wolfman and Gene Colan, debuting in “The Tomb of Dracula #10 ” (July 1973) as a supporting character. The character was modeled after several black actors, but originally his overall look was derived from NFL Hall of Fame member Jim Brown. He had an Afro, used knives and even wore bell bottoms. Wolfman said the moment he introduced the character, he knew Blade would overshadow the others. He even toned down Blade’s role in the comics in order for other characters to shine more as well as to work on Blade’s voice as a character. When he elevated the character in later comics, he changed Blade’s dialogue from coming off as stereotypically black because it bothered him. Blade became a more serious, badass character. Blade didn’t get a solo series until much later, but he had solo comic stories when writers wanted to pursue the marketing potential of the character. Blade was born half vampire after Deacon Frost posed as a doctor and bit Blade’s mother when she came for medical attention. Blade posses all of the Vampire’s strengths (superhuman strength, speed, agility, enhanced senses, healing factor, and immunities to all vampire abilities like hypnosis) and none of their weaknesses. Blade dedicated his life to hunting Vampires after learning of what happened to his mother. Most people became familiar with Blade after Wesley Snipes brought the character to life in the “Blade” film series. (Btw, I still think Blade 2 is one of the best comic book movies ever. So imaginative and action packed.) Coolest moment: Blade has beaten Dracula several times. It’s not just one moment, but each time was badass. #Blade #vampires #wesleysnipes #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 9- Black Lightning Black Lightning was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. He made his debut in “Black Lightning #1 ” (April 1977). Black Lightning was the first black DC hero to get his own comic. His original comic was controversial due to the repeated slang he used that bordered on stereotypical. People felt that a black hero didn’t have to “talk black” to be relatable. Furthermore, his vernacular seemed more like how white people felt blacks talked more than how we actually speak to each other. Jefferson Pierce was born a “metahuman” (DC’s equivalent to Marvel’s mutants) according to his current origin. However, originally he was a school teacher who found a belt that gave him lightning powers, giving him the strength he needed to fight crime in his community. Black Lightning’s abilities include electricity manipulation, energy absorption, force field generation, and peak physical conditioning. Coolest moment: Black Lightning turned down a membership to the Justice League because he felt like he’d do more good in his community than fighting on a super team. #BlackLightning #CressWilliams #CW #CWTV #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 7- Cyborg Cyborg was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, making his debut in “DC Comics Presents #26 ” (October 1980). Most people may know him from the Teen Titans animated series, where he was freakin’ awesome. Victor Stone was experimented on by his scientist parents at an early age, resulting in him becoming a genius. Because of his advanced awareness of the world, he came to resent his parents due to their experiments and manipulation of him. When he found his parents working on inter-dimensional travel, Victor was wounded badly when a creature attacked him and killed his mother. Victor’s father, in a desperate attempt to save his son, merged Victor’s remains with a machine. Victor survives but is horrified of by his new circumstance. He would eventually move forward with his life once he learned that his new body (and abilities) would allow him to help others. He is one of the founding members of the Teen Titans, and would later become a member of The Justice League in the “New 52” relaunch. Victor’s abilities include super strength, durability, endurance, and speed. He also has technopathy, has built in weapons, and can generate boom tubes. Mind-blowing moment: Cyborg finds out that he’s not Victor Stone, but instead he’s a machine that has all of Stone’s memories and THINKS he’s Victor Stone. He’s basically A.I. that’s using Victor’s remains as a body. #Cyborg #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 6- Luke Cage Luke Cage was created by Archie Goodwin, George Tuska, Roy Thomas, and John Romira /Sr. Debuting in his own comic, “Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 ” (June 1972), he became the first black super hero who was the featured protagonist as well as title character of his own comic. Luke Cage was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. There he was experimented on, resulting in him attaining super powers. Luke would go on to use his powers for not only good, but also for profit. People would pay Luke to do good deeds and handle issues for them, often resulting in some pretty funny storylines. He also became a member of the Avengers later. Luke’s abilities include impenetrable skin, super strength, and healing factor. Most people know him from his self-titled Netflix series, where he is played by Mike Colter. Coolest Moment: No lie, Luke Cage borrowed a whole airplane from the Fantastic Four because he found out Dr. Doom sent someone to hire him to beat up some robots. Luke wasn’t pissed about Dr. Doom hiring him. He was mad because Dr. Doom didn’t pay him after he completed the job. HE KICKED DR. Black History Comic Book Characters February 5- Amanda “The Wall” Waller You didn’t think I was ONLY going to do “super heroes”, did you? The anti-heroes and the villains have to get some shine, too. Amanda Waller was created by John Ostrander, Len Wein, and John Byrne. She is considered a villain in the DC Comics universe, but some times finds herself aligning with heroes to reach common goals. Waller is human, but she’s still a formidable force in the DC Comics universe. “The Wall” is a government agent who created a task force of super villains called “The Suicide Squad”. They aren’t working for her by choice, as they all have a bomb implanted in them that she controls and will kill any member who defies her orders. The Suicide Squad usually take on missions with shady objectives that include political assassinations, retrieval of dangerous weapons and objects, abductions, etc. Some fans may remember Waller from the “Justice League” animated series, but she got her big screen debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, where Viola Davis played her. Coolest Moment: On the episode “Epilogue” from “Justice League Unlimited”, Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond) learns that he has some of Bruce Wayne’s DNA. He seeks out Waller for answers as to why, and she reveals that she respected Batman so much she designed a program to mimic his origin to ensure the world always had a Dark Knight. It’s crazy, but cool in that it shows Waller had great admiration for the kind of hero Batman was. #amandawaller #thewall #violadavis #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 4- The Green Lantern (John Stewart) John Stewart was created by Neal Adams and Dennis O’Neil after Adams had a conversation with his editor about making a black Green Lantern character. Adams stated that he wanted to create a black super hero for DC Comics not as a means to make a political statement, but because it made sense to him. With this creation, John Stewart became DC’s first black super hero, making his debut in “Green Lantern Vol. 2 (December 1971/January 1972)”. John Stewart is a U.S. Marine veteran who was deemed worthy enough by the Guardians to be given the powers of the Green Lantern as a back up for the primary Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. Stewart and Jordan initially did not see eye to eye, but after completing a mission together they earned each other’s trust. Stewart would go on to fill in many times for Jordan over the years as the primary Green Lantern, even serving as a member of the Justice League several times. Stewart possesses the same powers as every other Green Lantern, with the ability to construct objects and weapons using the Green Lantern ring, flight, etc. Coolest moment: Like many people, my first exposure to John Stewart was the “Justice League” animated series. John’s coolest moment for me is when he and Hawkgirl defeated the latter’s ex lover and thwarted the Thanagarian Invasion in the “Starcrossed” storyline. #greenlantern #johnstewart #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 3- Icon Icon was created by Dwayne McDuffy and M. D. Bright under the Milestone comic imprint (but the comics were distributed by DC Comics). He made his debut in his own comic, “Icon #1 ” (May 1993). Later on Milestone’s universe was merged with the main DC universe, allowing Icon to live in the same world with the likes of Superman, Batman, and the rest of the Justice League. Icon is an alien that crash landed in the south during slavery. He copied the first life-form he could find and it happened to be an enslaved woman. The woman raised him as her own son and since he does not age, he usually tells others that he is his own son to those who may have seen him decades prior and would notice he looks. He doesn’t become a hero until much later on, after a faithful encounter with Rocket, the woman who would become his sidekick (we’ll get into that later this month). Icon’s abilities include superhuman strength, reflexes, speed, flight, invulnerability, healing factor, and near immortality. He is also one of the smartest characters in the DC universe. Basically, he could just about go blow for blow with Superman Coolest moment I’ve seen: I’m a law geek, seeing Icon have to defend The Justice League as their lawyer for crimes they committed on the tv show “Young Justice” was incredible to me. (Note: he’s voiced by Tony Todd!) #icon #tonytodd #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelcomics #mecu #candyman #superheroes #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #africanamerican #history #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Super Heroes February 2- Storm You probably saw this one coming, huh? Storm (aka Ororo Munroe) was created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, making her debut in “Giant-Size X-Men #1 ” (May 1975). From that point forward she became a staple on the X-men roster. Legend has it, Cockrum actually intended for Storm to be male until he saw the lack of female heroes with unique powers. Storm is the first female super hero of African descent (and went on to marry the first male super hero of African descent, The Black Panther. Go back to yesterday’s post for more on him). Storm comes from a lineage of powerful African witches, which may cause you to think her powers may be more supernatural than mutant. However, her powers are explained by way of the X-gene, the unique gene that all mutants have in common. Storm can control the weather, often drastically changing the climate during battles. Favorite Storm Moment: On the 90’s X-men cartoon (where many people discovered Storm), she has an iconic battle with Calypso, leader of the Morlocks. Storm and Calypso engage in a truly badass fight that involves lightsabers... Every day in the month of February I’m posting a black comic book character. What better character to kick things off with than: February 1- The Black Panther Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, The Black Panther (real name T’Challa) made his debut in “Fantastic Four #52 ” (July 1966). He was the first black superhero in American comics as well as the first superhero of African descent. He is the king of the fictional African country, Wakanda, a place with technological and scientific advances that are far ahead of anything the rest of the world can offer thanks to the alien mineral, Vibranium. The Black Panther’s attributes include having the strength and knowledge of every Black Panther that preceded him, peak human abilities and senses, genius level intellect, and a suit made of Vibranium. The Black Panther has been portrayed in many forms of media, but most people know him from his Oscar Nominated film from 2018 where he is played by Chadwick Boseman. Coolest Character Story: The Black Panther has a ton of dope stories (including one where he beats the hell out of the KKK), but my personal favorite is the one where he teams up with Luke Cage, Blade, and Dr. Voodoo to take on vampires in Louisiana. It’s incredible. #blackpanther #marvelcomics #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #wakanda #chadwickboseman #michaelbjordan #jordan #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
