At Saturday’s @westportfarmersmarket I got the most beautiful shiitake and maitake mushrooms @seacoastmushrooms ! They looked so beautiful and intriguing. I couldn’t wait to bring them home and make something! Mushrooms are amazing immune boosters and have long been valued for their medicinal properties. Shiitakes mushrooms contain a polysaccharide called Lentanin that has been shown to inhibit the activity of S. Mutans, the bacteria most commonly responsible for tooth decay. Both Shiitake and Maitake mushrooms are rich in beta-glucan which supports a healthy immunity system and helps fight off infections. They have also demonstrated anti-cancer and anti-viral properties. Ingredients: 1.5 lbs combination of shiitake and maitake mushrooms, washed and sliced @seacoastmushrooms 1 large red onion, sliced

1 28oz can crushed tomatoes Directions:
Spray pan with cooking spray over medium high heat sauté onions until they start to caramelize. About 3-5 minutes. Add mushrooms and sauté for about 7-10 minutes until mushrooms are caramelized (do NOT over-stir mushrooms) 
Add salt, maple syrup and oregano. Cook another 2-5 minutes until soft, tender and caramelized.
Add chipotles in adobo and cook a minute more.
Add the crushed tomatoes. Simmer for 1-2 minutes. How is it treated? 1) Antibiotics --- The most well-known antibiotic for SIBO is rifaximin. This antibiotic does not spread into your bloodstream and is very effective at eliminating the bacteria that cause SIBO. It has been shown to improve symptoms in 92% of patients and eradicate SIBO in up to 80% of patients. However, successful treatment with this antibiotic can be short lived due to the high risk of relapse roughly nine months after finishing treatment. ----------------------------------- 2) Antimicrobials – In an interesting study at a gastroenterology practice, patients with SIBO were given either rifaximin or one of two herbal treatments for four weeks. The herbal treatments were either: Dysbiocide and FC Cidal or Candibactin-AR and Candibactin-BR. The study showed that of the patients that received rifaximin, 34% had a negative lactulose test afterwards. HOWEVER, out of those that received the herbal treatments, this number rose to 46%! This suggests that herbal therapy may be as effective or MORE effective than antibiotic therapy. Also I can confirm the effectiveness of antimicrobials as this is what I used for my SIBO. ----------------------------------- 3) Diet – The elemental diet has been shown to be highly effective in reducing SIBO. In a 2004 study, patients with SIBO were subjected to a 14-day elemental diet. This diet involved drinking a powdered beverage from Vivonex Plus for 14 days with the aim of starving the bacteria. On day 15, 80% of the patients had a normal lactulose breath test which demonstrates that severe dietary means of treatment can be an option to consider. ---------------------------------- It is important to note that treatment for SIBO is complex and must be individualized in order to ensure the best outcome. Often, it comes down to addressing the source of the problem in the first place and I would really recommend working with a healthcare provider and getting some testing done to figure out where to start 😊#guthealth #microbiome #sibo #sibotreatment #sibohelp #digestion #ibs

*Read on for personal opinion mixed with cold unbiased evidence-based facts*⁣ ⁣ Lots of patients over the years have asked me about supplementing probiotics for gut health...even my Dad is partial to the odd probiotic drink or yoghurt.⁣ ⁣ Is there any convincing evidence that probiotics positively effect gastrointestinal disorders? No. Why? Well...⁣ ⁣ 1. Bacteria from a probiotic supplement might not actually succeed in colonizing the human intestinal tract. ⁣ 2. Studies have concluded that in some patients, probiotic strains could be identified in samples obtained from some study participants, but in others, those probiotic strains were undetectable.⁣ 3. Several studies looking at the fecal microbiome in patients that had received antibiotics showed a delayed recovery in normal gut flora of over 5 months to reach pre antibiotic state levels (usually takes a healthy individual 21 days without any intervention to regenerate their usual gut microbiome)⁣ 4. We don’t know the long term consequences of Probiotics.⁣ 5. Probiotics should be used with caution in patients with chronic disease, are immunocompromised, or are otherwise vulnerable (such as elderly patients).⁣ 6. More Research Needed Before Usefulness Of Probiotics Proven⁣ ⁣ Bottom line?⁣ ⁣ Faecal microbiome research is a developing area and is exciting. It is a crucially important area of study and is key to discovering the underlying pathophysiology to many conditions. ⁣ ⁣ But right now as of 22nd January 2019 we have limited information and cannot determine which probiotic preparations/strains of bacteria may be helpful, which patients should be targeted, and how. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ But if you like the taste of probiotic drinks and yoghurts and it makes you feel good, who can discount the placebo effect and the mental good it can potentially offer!⁣ ⁣ I’m sticking with my Rolo toffee yoghurt for now...⁣
As you may of noticed from my stories, I have been testing out some of the recipes from the Clever Guts Recipe Book this week. I can honestly say this is now my favourite cook book- I absolutely love it & highly recommend it! Not only are the recipes in this book nourishing for the whole body (not least the gut!), but they taste insanely good. So good, that after having the cauliflower and paneer curry for dinner, I RAN HOME from work last night for a second (snack sized 😜) helping! 😂 Pictured is the delicious beetroot & celeriac soup I made in batch for lunches this week, topped with toasted cashews and coconut yogurt. This was so warming and filling, perfect for the colder weather. Slightly off topic, but did you know...around 14% of the population get pink wee (beeturia) from eating beetroot? I literally cannot get enough of my fermented turnips as a topping for everything from salads, to eggs, to soups. They smell terrifying when you crack the jar, but the flavor is all delicious spicy sour crunch without any of the weird earthy turnipy stuff. . To make, use a mandolin or sharp knife to chop a bunch of turnips into matchsticks. Salt and let drain for a few hours, rinse, and toss with a few cloves of minced garlic and a teaspoon of red pepper flakes (or more, you spicy thing). Then pack into a glass jar and just barely cover with brine. (I think I use about a tablespoon per quart of water, but you should fact check me on that). Weight the turnips down with a smaller jar filled with water and let sit at room temperature for 3 to 5 days. You should see light bubbles when they're ready and you will definitely, definitely be able to smell them! . Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects 10% to 15% of the general population and lacks a single unifying pathophysiology and disease-defining biomarker. It is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain related to defecation or in association with change in stool frequency or form. Patients also commonly feel bloating.
