BIRTH CONTROL- WEIGHT GAIN ANYONE?! • pic 1: Before IUD 105 lbs Pic 2: 4 months after getting my IUD 138 lbs • Neither weight is good or bad I like both versions of m, it was just so confusing why I gained 33 pounds in just a short while ... it took my body about 1 full year to regulate. And another full year to realize the IUD was the reason for this weight gain- because I then saw it happening to my girl friend! • It is very disheartening when you are eating the same working out even harder and still gaining weight! S L E E P 🛏 😴 Most of us are aware that adults need around 6-8 hours of sleep each night. You’ve also probably noticed that a bad night sleep impacts how you feel PHYSICALLY and EMOTIONALLY. What is perhaps less obvious is the impact a lack of sleep has on our brains. \\ Sleeplessness interrupts our neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that send signals between different parts of our brain. Two important neurotransmitters impacted by a lack of sleep are serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). I will explain how.. SEROTONIN is involved in many functions such as sleep, memory and appetite. It is no wonder then that all of these functions are affected by a lack of sleep. An imbalance of serotonin can also impact mood and may lead to depression. \\ GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. When your brain recognises anxiety it tries to balance out the effects by sending signals to your GABA receptors to inhibit this anxiety, making you feel calm and relaxed. \\ Further benefits of sleep: 💤 Boosts immunity 💤 Consolidates memory 💤 Increases concentration 💤 Increases feelings of relaxation \\ How does a lack of sleep impact you? Blaming impedes progress. It keeps us from progressing through the very thing we are blaming. When we blame, we actually give the thing we are blaming power over us. We each have an infinite amount of divine solutions available to us through enlightenment and blaming is not enlightening. Whenever I catch my thoughts blaming or making an excuse I examine what is really going on and what responsibility I can take in the situation to create a solution. For example, the other day instead of doing homework, I had all these other things come up that I took care of. I was telling a friend all the excuses of why I wasn’t able to get to my homework, but I immediately stopped myself and said I chose to do these other things instead of doing homework. Even something as simple as that gets back the power and accountability in the situation and helps us avoid blame and excuses. #powerofthemind

M I N D F U L • E A T I N G We eat when we feel sad. We eat when we feel happy. We eat when we feel anxious. We eat when we are hungry. We eat when we are not hungry. \\ Food is such an integral part of life but how often do you stop to think about WHAT you’re eating and WHERE it came from? Mindful eating is all about paying attention to the textures, tastes, flavours and smells of the food you’re eating. Have you ever sat down to watch a film and got to the bottom of the popcorn bag before the film has even started and wondered where all the popcorn went? Or spent hours cooking a meal only for it to be eaten in 5 minutes? For whatever reason we often eat mindlessly, without taking the time to actually enjoy what we are eating. \\ Mindful eating has many positive health benefits: 🥑 Improved digestion 🥑 Increased enjoyment of food 🥑 Reduced overeating + binge eating 🥑 Increased awareness of how food affects your mood \\ A few tips for you to try: 🙏 Turn off all devices and get rid of any distractions so you can pay full attention to what you're eating and realise when you're getting full 🙏 Don't eat at your desk! Stress has a HUGE impact on our digestion. This is because stress activates the fight or flight response and the body priorities more important physical functions (such as heart rate and breathing) over digestion in response to a perceived threat 🙏 Breathe deeply - as little as three deep breaths before eating can help switch your body from stress to rest and digest mode 🙏 Eat slowly and chew your food. After all, digestion begins in the mouth and much digestive discomfort can easily be avoided by taking time to chew your food properly 🙏 Notice how you FEEL before and after eating certain foods. P R O D U C T I V I T Y Monday - it’s got to be the most dreaded day of the week? We are often managing competing priorities and Monday can bring with it a (gentle?) reminder that our to do list just seems to keep growing. This can induce a state of panic when we realise just how long that list has become. \\ I used to like to leave things to chance, being SPONTANEOUS was how I liked to think of it (my boyfriend was more inclined to say I was chancing luck). When things didn’t quite go to plan I would tell myself it was because it just wasn’t meant to be. In hindsight, I think this was a way of coping with the idea that I might have failed. \\ More recently my motto has slightly changed. While I still love spontaneity and believe things happen for a reason (to a certain extent), I am much more inclined to PLAN my life and have realised that in doing so I am much more in control of my own SUCCESS and HAPPINESS. \\ Tips to juggle many competing demands and help you prioritise your week: ✔️ Slow down - consistently rushing from one thing to the next means you’re likely to miss the subtle nuances of the present moment that bring happiness, build connections, cultivate strengths and create opportunities. It should also increase your focus. ✔️ Be mindful - just a few breaths can help ground yourself in the present, slow a busy brain and keep you on track of your goals ✔️ Meet anxiety with a gentle curiosity - take a little time to think about why you’re overwhelmed. By being more present and turning your attention to your worries or stress you’re more likely to be able to understand where it’s come from and shift your perspective (and get back to your to do list quicker!) \\ I hope you all find moments to enjoy being mindful this week 🙏 • • • #memyselfandmindfulness #mindandbody #mindfulness
L A U G H T E R • Y O G A 🧘‍♀️ I will never ever forget my very first (and last) experience of laughter yoga. I dragged a friend along with me and we turned up in our yoga gear keen to try a new type of yoga. When we arrived we instantly knew something was wrong; everyone seemed to be in jeans and there weren’t any yoga mats in sight. What we failed to understand was that laughter yoga is not at all like yoga as we knew it... \\ Laughter yoga is a practise which involves voluntary and prolonged laugher. There is an open invitation to laugh for absolutely NO REASON. The premise is that it doesn’t matter whether your laughter is real or fake, you can achieve the same physiological and psychological benefits by artificially inducing laughter . And that’s what we did for one very long hour. We had arguments in laughter, ‘spoke’ on the phone in laughter and even poked STRANGERS in an attempt to uncover their ‘laughter buttons’. \\ But it can’t all be bad. A few benefits of laughter: 🧘‍♀️ Strengthened immune system 🧘‍♀️ Improved mood (through the release of endorphins) 🧘‍♀️ Reduced stress 🧘‍♀️ Can control blood pressure by reducing the release of stress-related hormones and promoting relaxation 🧘‍♀️ Natural pain killer \\ Would I go back? That’s a tough one to answer. Laughter yoga is definitely not for everyone (some people left very early); but what I can say for sure is it was the best ab routine I’ve ever done (from all the laughing) and I did kinda feel great afterwards...although I think I almost lost a friend over it. I’ll never forget her turning to me about 2 minutes in and mouthing “I am going to kill you”. Good • Mood • Food 🚨News flash 🚨WHAT we eat affects HOW we feel. Not actually a news flash at all. We all know that reaching for chocolate at 3pm feels great after an initial energy spike until we hit the sugar crash, which can make us feel tired and irritable (well it does me, anyhow!). Sugar highs and lows are just one of the many ways food can affect how you feel. \\ Depression is a common mood disorder which results from a complex interplay of factors - genetics, illness and stress to name a few. A recent Randomised Controlled Trial (the gold standard in psychology) in Australia aimed to examine the efficacy of a dietary intervention in the treatment of depression. They found a significant improvement in symptoms for those in the dietary intervention group, compared with those in the social support (control) condition. \\ It can be quite confusing to keep up with what experts suggest we should be eating, as it often feels like advice around this frequently changes. My personal preference is to follow the anti-diet of INTUITIVE EATING. This is all about being more mindful of what we eat and eating WITHOUT GUILT. There are NO RESTRICTIONS and NO CALORIE COUNTING, which makes it super easy to follow. \\ I will revisit this topic soon, in more detail and share the 10 principles of intuitive eating so stay tuned! FUN FACT FRIDAY 📖 Mindfulness can rewire your brain and help you learn and remember things! 💭 \\ Recent research by Hölzel and colleagues of Harvard medical School found that regular mindfulness practice increases grey matter in the hippocampus, a region of the brain involved in learning and memory processes. The hippocampus is also involved in regulating emotions; subsequent structural changes in this area may reflect improved emotion regulation abilities. \\ Anatomical images also showed reduced grey matter in the amygdala, a part of the brain connected to anxiety and stress.
