It's calm and reckless, depending on the day, depending on who you ask. It will pull you in or push you out before you even know which way is up. And if you're quiet enough, if you're willing to be still, to let her sounds crash into you, perhaps you'll understand her. Perhaps the next time your ear is against a shell, when you're straining to remember the sounds you once heard in that place on the sand where you heard the beauty in the chaos, when you heard beyond the static, it will occur to you that the white noise speaks to you without words. That noise you crave- in the shell, in the electronic thing plugged in next to your bed, or on your phone - maybe it's simple or predictable, but it works. Without words, it reaches you. And maybe the next time you see a little girl struggling to speak, you'll remember that while it may be easier to understand words, they aren't necessary. If you're willing to be still, and to really listen, you will understand how a little girl became best friends with the ocean. How, after years of frustration, she finally found someone who spoke her heart language. And this simple truth will become evident - people talk too much anyway.
