Tea's Growing Region - Southwest China
The southwest region is universally considered the birthplace of tea and includes Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and part of the Tibet Autonomous Region. This region is best known for the production of Pu'erh and other dark teas, although it also produces very fine black teas.
The teas produced in the southwest tend to vary greatly in taste and appearance because the region's soil has some of the highest organic content in all of China. Unlike the Jiangbei and Jiangnan regions, the southwest does not produce a famous green tea, although, as with most regions in China, the region produces interesting green teas for domestic consumption. In addition to its famous Pu'erh teas, the southwest produces sublime black teas such as Dian Hong (Yunnan). .
