I’m reflecting and being honest here so would love to have your feedback ✍🏼👍🏼 👦🏻👩🏿👱🏼♀️👨🏽👵🏼🧔🏾 always ask me “what do you ACTUALLY do?” In all honesty, I don’t know how to answer this question yet in one sentence. I have multiple freelance jobs but am struggling along, trying to dedicate as much time as possible to what I’m trying to achieve. The problem for a long time has been, I don’t really know what that is (and still can’t nail it down to one thing). Multiple people have said to me, “fill your bucket up first” then you can help others. I feel like this has always been the way and certainly makes sense should you have a family and responsibilities...but I don’t.
I’m human, I want to be able to buy a house and live a comfortable life for myself as well as focus on social issues.
I feel a lot of negativity towards anyone that makes their living doing good but I feel this in itself is negative.
If you can fill up both buckets, doing good and earning a living then I think it should be encouraged as long as it’s from the right place and relative.
There seems to be this idea that if you do good you can magically support yourself. It’s just not the case and I see a lot of issues that could be helped by funding people properly so they can focus their energy into it.
I find society a strange place; we scrutinise 6 figure salary CEOs of charities but if you’re earning 7/8 figures in a bank it’s fine.
Now I agree - charities have to be transparent. People have donated money and that should, as much as possible, go towards the cause. But if you are to attract highly skilled people there has to be an incentive also. That’s a highly unpopular view but it’s one that’s more realistic.
With the next generation, if we can show them you can do good and earn a healthy living, would we get more social entrepreneurs? More change makers and more solutions to societies problems?
I think we would. It’s already happening in certain areas - for example renewable fuels.
What do you think? Is it wrong to make money and do good at the same time? Or will it lead to greater solutions for the causes we care about in our communities. Let me know what you think!
