In 2015, I climbed my first ever mountain: Ben Nevis. It was a midnight charity climb. I had no idea what to expect.
As I began to climb, it began to rain heavily. Conditions deteriorated and visibility reduced rapidly. At the half way point, people were already turning back. I was pretty determined to get to the top as lots of people had sponsored me, but I was struggling.
After throwing up from exertion, slipping on ice and rock, and failing to keep down water, I made it to the top. It was freezing. I could barely walk.
Upon the descent, I was on my own for about 2 hours wondering where everyone else had disappeared to. It was eerily silent.
The entire climb from start to finish lasted 9 hours, including a stop at the doctor's tent!
At the bottom, I was told it was the worst conditions they'd seen for 20 years. Half of the 400 strong group had been turned around. It was enough to put anyone off mountains for life.
The photo is me smiling after the 9 hour ordeal.
Two years later, in 2017 I completed the National Three Peaks in 22 hours and 10 minutes. Ben Nevis was first and to keep in time I ran from the top all the way to the bottom. I've climbed countless mountains since then.
I've learnt never to let a challenge stop you from trying again. You are stronger than you think.
