At some point as we age, our bodies forget how to squat. And no, it’s not because you “lost” the ability. It’s because you stopped training the ability.
Here I have my clients at the wall doing PAILs/RAILs for dorsiflexion to retrain their ankles. As CrossFit clients, increased dorsiflexion is not only an asset, but ultimately a prerequisite to their training.

I often start my day with something that makes me uncomfortable. Usually it’s training. Today it was a dip in the cold ocean (actually wasn't that cold). While I use ice baths and cold showers regularly, I fucking hate the cold. As a kid I’d do everything I could to avoid school swimming lessons unless it was in the indoor heated pool.
These days I’m less of a puss (just a little). I have learned the value of getting comfortable being uncomfortable and I have learned, and continue to learn, how to manage my response. While I don’t advocate a life of discomfort and lack, I believe we have become too comfortable. We whinge and bitch about the smallest of inconveniences or discomforts. (I’m guilty of this).
I believe we can all benefit, physically and mentally, from exposing ourselves to discomfort, learning how to choose our responses and becoming more resilient. While a dip in the cold ocean is certainly no hardship, it’s still stressful to me and requires me to manage my response to that stress.
If you feel you’re living a life of too much comfort, be honest with yourself and ask some questions. Where am I getting too comfortable in life or how is that showing up in my life? Where, or how, can I introduce some discomfort? Importantly, how can I manage my response to discomfort. Breath work is my go-to.
NOW, don’t do stupid shit just to get uncomfortable, that’s not what I mean (note in the pic I’m in the shark net because I’m not cool with all the Noah’s floating around out there. Outside the shark net, I see as a risk/discomfort I’m not ready to take). But what can you do that creates some discomfort, in a controlled environment, that gives you an opportunity to practice your response?
Getting uncomfortable is a means for developing the tools to better manage your response to stress. If you never expose yourself to that, you will never develop the tools.
