Simple way to master your hinge pattern . This is a very simple tool taught to me by the RKC to find your hinge. . Start by standing 1 inch away from the wall and push your hips back until your butt reaches the wall. . Easy right? Practice this, do this 3-5 times then move another inch out, still easy huh? Okay, now I want you to remember to keep you back straight. . Imagine you have a metal rod running down your spine from the top of your skull through your tail bone. . Take another half step out. Reach your glutes back to the wall, keep that back straight. . Now do that again did you notice that you had to squat down and bend your knees at all to get there? . We want to maintain our shin angle as verticle as possible. . I like to imagine from my knee caps down are in cement and I cant move them. So the only way we are changing our knee angle is by sitting our hips back. Make sense? . Continue this until you cannot maintain balance on you feet and you feel you are about to fall backwards. . Do it again, now just before you feel yourself start fall back bring your torso down slightly towards the floor making sure your back is flat and your hip and shoulders are staying in alignment. . You should feel a deep stretch in your hamstrings. . Congratulations you now know how to hinge! . 6 weeks of this... with a pool buoy between my ankles ...not even pool running allowed. This is what you get for not listening to your body. 12 weeks of resting from running for a femoral neck (hip)stress fracture should be enough. However, standing on your feet for hours, running kids around, managing home and work can worsen things as these movements cause load on the injured bone. Just because you stop running for three months, it doesn’t automatically mean you can commence a walk run loading program straight after... especially if there are still some symptoms. Even as a Physio who knows better, I had convinced myself that the residual pain I still had was on overlying muscular tear. I can push through that as I know I’ve given the bone time to heal I thought... 6 weeks on, like a battery slowly losing its charge I’ve regressed back to being unable to run again or hop or walk distances. So - I’m not writing this for attention or pity as it is my job to keep other people safe from this sort of thing happening. LOAD MANAGEMENT varies widely between individuals. Do what your wise Physios tell you to do. Stay within the boundaries set and LISTEN to your body. If niggles are not settling, be kind to yourself and give it what it needs which is sometimes REST! Then consider how lucky you are to be running, riding, walking, swimming and/or actually moving in any capacity. #physio #saferecovery #runsafe #movesafe

Ferris Bueller says, “Life moves pretty fast.” We agree with him that everyone should slow down once in a while and have a look around, but The Brand X Method™ knows that life moves not just fast but also in all kinds of unexpected ways. And we want our youth to enjoy all of it, sometimes without having to slow down. Not even a little bit. Isn’t that the essence of functional fitness? An ongoing problem with training has been an overemphasis on the sagittal plane of movement (i.e., forward/backward and up/down movements), with frontal plane (side movements) work coming in second in terms of programming attention. Often lacking is work in the transverse plane (rotational movements). It’s no secret that The Brand X Method considers strength to be the king of physical skills. It’s also no secret that strength is rooted in the core. Core strength and the ability to stabilize the midline are significant injury prevention elements of our youth programming. We love transverse plane movements to strengthen the core while ingraining bracing technique and adding depth to kids’ ability to control their bodies under a variety of circumstances. We start with anti-rotational movements. It’s logical to introduce youth to a family of exercises that begin with static positions such as planks. It also makes sense to teach kids how to resist rotation before asking them to produce rotational power. Rotational exercises, such as medicine ball throws, help develop power in the transverse plane. They enable kids to train for more fluid and explosive movement in sports and everyday life, while also protecting against injury. For the youth with appropriate exposure, a mix of anti-rotational and rotational movements is a potent programming brew for athletic expression. Brand X Method coaches know how to build formidable and enduring core strength through the individualized programming of anti-rotational and rotational exercises, ensuring that each and every kid is being challenged in ways appropriate to his or her capacity. The lunge. It’s considered a fundamental movement skill. That means it’s essential to master as part of any effective development program committed to enhancing physical literacy and athleticism across a general youth population. Fundamental movement skills are often called the vocabulary of physical literacy. To expand on that analogy, although vocabulary can be learned through exposure to language, we take for granted that it must also be taught to children for them to achieve a wide and deep mastery, to be seen as truly literate. However, words can be broken down into smaller units that have their own significance, and learning those amplifies a child’s command of language. The Brand X Method™ embraces this analogy. We teach fundamental and others movements by focusing on perfecting quality checkpoints. For the lunge, this means that several things must occur consistently before we would ever consider increasing complexity or intensity (speed/load): · Does the lead foot land fully in contact with the ground? · Can we see the arch of the lead foot? · Is the lead ankle stacked over the foot and not collapsing? · Is the lead shin generally vertical and stacked over the ankle? · Is the lead knee stacked over the ankle, in line with the foot, and behind the toes? · Is the spine neutral, meaning is the torso in a slight forward lean? · Is the midline stable? · Can the youth step through a walking lunge on one leg with control even when fatigued? A coach who can’t recognize movement flaws or chooses to ignore them while programming complex and/or loaded lunge variations puts kids at risk of injury. That’s why The Brand X Method is obsessed with movement quality and teaching coaches not just how to see movement but also how to program movements, variations, and progressions to account for each and every child’s individual capacity, anthropometry, and daily circumstance.
