MINI REVIEW: ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’ starring Mr. Rogers himself
‘Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood’ predates my childhood. I grew up with the likes of ‘Barney’, ‘Spongebob’ and ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’, so going into ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’, the documentary chronicling the life and career of Fred Rogers and his renowned children’s program, I really didn’t know what to expect. After watching the film, all I can say is wow: wow, what a man; and wow, what a film. Fred Rogers was one of a kind, and the story of his show, and more importantly his message, not only resonates as a beautiful testament to an incredible person; but also as a beautiful testament to the ideals of love, respect and dignity. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t watch major portions of ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’ with tears welling in my eyes. Not because of sadness, but because of the warmth and spirit of kindness Fred Rogers, and in turn this film, radiates in spades.
OVERALL: This is a terrific, lovingly crafted documentary, and easily one of the year’s very best films. 4.8/5 colored sweatshirts
