When I moved to the Twin Cities from New York 3 years ago, I didn't know many people. But I did know how to use Instagram and other social media platforms because I had been doing it professionally for years. I wanted to build a local network and I figured Instagram was a great place to begin. As I researched people on Instagram in the Twin Cities, I saw that there was a very lively community of people who support each other online, but they also meet up in person and do really cool things. I started following shop owners, editors, TV personalities, online influencers and things like @minneapolis_cm
I started to get a handle on the pulse of the creative community and I wanted to connect the dots and become part of it. So I said to my husband, I'm going to test if I can completely build a network here through networking on instagram. Honestly, I did it...that’s a blog post in the making...One of the 1st people I followed 3 years ago was @iamsarahedwards.
That online connection led me to one of the most memorable nights I’ve had in Minnesota, and it was just last night. I sat at a beautiful table as part of a #Friendsgiving
event held at the @thelynhall
hosted by @bumblebff
and curated by Sarah + @iamconnectedstudio
, with flowers by @helloapricot__
and drinks by @prairieorganic.
Everyone at the dinner went around the table and shared who they are, what they are grateful for and how Instagram inspires their passion or creativity. The phones went away and we genuinely listened to each other. Online brought us together and we took it offline...I felt gratitude for the power of this social media platform. Sure I get #FOMO
from Insta or it makes me feel anxious when I don’t get enough likes — but when I look past that fear based crap, Insta has been the catalyst and connection point for new friends, new career achievements and life experiences that I could not have possibly had if I didn’t engage on Insta. Today, I’m loving the life I’ve built here in Minnesota and the people who are part of it. To have been at that dinner last night was a gift. And to the wonderful people I met last night, may this just be the beginning! #bumblebff
