#October is #Archives Month and the 2018 theme is “Documenting Medical History in Montana.” In addition to collecting archival materials and #photographs , MHS also has a collection of medical instruments such as this ornate nitrous oxide gasometer. It was used by Marysville dentist John Vincent Cole at the turn of the 20th century. One of the challenges of early #dentistry was the lack of effective and safe anesthesia. Prior to the use of nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas), an injection of a cocaine solution was sometimes used to numb a dental patient’s gums before oral surgery; alternatively, the patient was sedated with chloroform. The tank is also featured in an online exhibit, “Appropriate, Curious, and Rare: Montana History Object by Object.” [Image: Anesthesia tank, MHS Museum Collection, gift of Dr. T. C. Illustrated Letter, Hellow Sentral, watercolor, ink, paper [1986.06.22] In this self-effacing communiqué sent from New York, Russell depicts himself as a gap-toothed bumpkin uncharacteristically sporting a derby, gloves, spats, and walking cane. He also pokes fun at his aversion to modern gadgets like the telephone and the unlikelihood that he would make a long-distance call to Montana simply to gossip. When Russell penned this letter in 1907, Central Avenue turned to mud whenever Great Falls received a heavy rain. #ArtatMHS #Montana #CharlieRussell #MTHist #Drawing #IllustratedLetter

Located immediately above the mouth of Cow Creek on the Missouri River, the Cow Island Landing Skirmish Site represents the location of a September 23-24, 1877 encounter between warriors belonging to five non-treaty Nez Perce bands and a small party of entrenched U.S. Army soldiers and civilian freight clerks during the 1877 Nez Perce War. At the time of the engagement, the location served as a commercial freight depot and landing. Last Friday, on September 21, the Cow Island Landing Skirmish Site was passed by the Montana State Historic Preservation Review Board for submittal to the Keeper of the National Register! #CowCreek #MissouriRiver #Montana #MontanaHistory #MTHist #BigSkyCountry #NezPerce #NationalRegister
Our Photo Archives is very excited to announce the acquisition of visual materials from the Air National Guard in Great Falls. The collection contains thousands of still images from the 1960s through the 1990s, providing a wonderful document of Montana life in the second half of the twentieth century. In addition to these regional #photographs , the collection also contains over 600 videocassettes from the 1980s to the 2010s. These programs include training materials, military maneuvers, ceremonies, parties and memorial services – all of which give us unique insight into the daily activities and culture at the Great Falls headquarters! #GreatFallsMontana #MontanaLife #MontanaMoment #MTHist #AirNationalGuard #WBW
Congratulations to Natasha Hollenbach, Digital Projects Librarian, for receiving the 2018 Montana Governor's Award for Excellence in Performance for the Montana Historical Society! With quiet efficiency, Natasha Hollenbach has led the Montana Historical Society’s efforts to expand online access to historic materials. Over the past year alone, she has added more than 80,000 pages to Montana’s online repository of historic newspapers. She has directed the implementation of our online exhibit platform, the Digital Vault, and has assisted with ‘installing’ two of its major exhibits. Not stopping at making the materials accessible, Natasha instructs the public (and, MHS staff!) on how to effectively use these resources. #MontanaMoment #MontanaHistory #MTHist #Newspapers #History #Montana #BigSkyCountry #LastBestPlace #Digitization #Repository

The stripes are thin and long. This is a good example of stripe and color field painting. Untitled (Indian on Horseback), Charles M. Russell, ca. 1895 [1980.60.01] This pen-and-ink drawing is an extra-illustration from Russell's personal copy of John H. Beacom's 'How the Buffalo Lost His Crown', a publication that featured eight illustrations commissioned from Russell, including one black-and-white oil painting, five black-and-white watercolors, and two small sketches. It was first published by Forest and Stream Publishing Company, Minneapolis, in 1894, and republished by H. R. Russell, New York, four years later. How the Buffalo Lost His Crown recounts a Blackfeet Indian legend that explained how man-with assistance from his animal friends-had gained the upper hand over the buffalo who, from the beginning of time, had ruled all other creatures.#CharlieRussell #MontanaMoment #Montana #CharlesRussell #Montana #Drawing #MTHist

Thank you for posting @mthistoricalsociety We just love hosting our annual auction at #charlieselkslodge March 22 & 23, 2019 #ridingthegoat #repost ・・・ I Rode Him, Charles M. Russell, watercolor and ink, 1908 [1986.06.06] "Riding the Goat" was a ritual commonly used to initiate a member into an Elks lodge, as well as many other fraternal lodges. While some fraternal groups used a mechanical reproduction goat, the Elks are believed to have used an actual goat for their ceremony. Here, the goat is saddled and branded with the head of an elk, and Charlie has just "broke" him. He looks a little worse for wear and tear: his hair and clothing are disheveled, his assumption sash has fallen awry, and the goat has trodden on his hat. This was presented to his fellow Elks in Great Falls after his initiation in March 1908. #WBW #CharlieRussell #MTHist #Montana #ArtatMHS #Painting #Drawing #History #Art #GreatFalls #ElksClub

One hundred and one years ago, #Montana experienced the worst hard rock #mining disaster in the country when a fire broke out in the Granite Mountain/Speculator Mine, resulting in the death of 168 miners. The disaster occurred just a few months after the U.S. declared war on Germany. Family members wrote to the North Butte Mining Company to find out if their loved ones were in the mines that day. Charley Taylor arrived in Plentywood in 1918 to edit the Nonpartisan League’s Producers News. The agrarian equivalent of the radical Industrial Workers of the World, the Nonpartisan League was a left-leaning organization that found itself at odds with the era’s “super-patriots.” The Producers News ultimately became the leading rural socialist/communist newspaper in the nation. To the delight of the region’s Scandinavian farmers, “Red Flag” Taylor beat the drum for socialism through the 1920s. #WW1MT #WW1 #WorldWarOne #MTHist #MontanaMoment #WayBackWednesday Image: Cartoon in the Producers News, Plentywood, MT, December 20, 1916, p. 1.

On this day, set aside to commemorate the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, we honor Montanans who worked to further equality and justice in the Treasure State, among them the members of Montana’s Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs. Organized in 1921, the federation became particularly active after World War II, and from 1949 to 1955 it led the campaign to pass civil rights legislation in Montana. After years of efforts, a bill banning segregation in places of public accommodation ultimately passed in 1955, but only after the state senate stripped the penalties for violating the law making it a mostly symbolic victory. #MartinLutherKingDay #photooftheday #MTHist #MLKDay #MLKDay2018 #MLK Photo: MFCWC 29th Annual Convention, Great Falls, July 25, 1950, MHS Photo Archives 96-15.6

The first piece of legislation in Montana regarding gambling specifically named the games “three card monte,” “strap game,” “thimble rig game,” “patent safe game,” “black and red game,” and “faro.” The punishments for violating this law were applied to both the persons taking part in gambling and the owner of any establishment (including tents!) that knowingly permitted gambling. #Montana #MTHist #Gambling #TBT
