Bronc To Breakfast, watercolor on paper, 1908, X1952.01.06 Russell left no written record documenting the inspriration for this painting. While it is certainly possible that is replicates an actual event that Russel witnessed, it is also possible that the scene is apocryphal. #RussellArt #ArtatMHS #CharlieRussell #MontanaMoment #MTHist #Art #Painting #Watercolor

One hundred and one years ago, #Montana experienced the worst hard rock #mining disaster in the country when a fire broke out in the Granite Mountain/Speculator Mine, resulting in the death of 168 miners. The disaster occurred just a few months after the U.S. declared war on Germany. Family members wrote to the North Butte Mining Company to find out if their loved ones were in the mines that day. Read their letters and the company's responses in our current exhibit, “Times of Trouble, Times of Change: Montana and the Great War.” Image: Fire at Speculator Mine, Butte, June 2017, Photograph Archives Collection, PAc 2013-50 #1469 . #MontanaMoment #MontanaHistory #MTHist

Charley Taylor arrived in Plentywood in 1918 to edit the Nonpartisan League’s Producers News. The agrarian equivalent of the radical Industrial Workers of the World, the Nonpartisan League was a left-leaning organization that found itself at odds with the era’s “super-patriots.” The Producers News ultimately became the leading rural socialist/communist newspaper in the nation. To the delight of the region’s Scandinavian farmers, “Red Flag” Taylor beat the drum for socialism through the 1920s. #WW1MT #WW1 #WorldWarOne #MTHist #MontanaMoment #WayBackWednesday Image: Cartoon in the Producers News, Plentywood, MT, December 20, 1916, p. 1.

On this day, set aside to commemorate the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, we honor Montanans who worked to further equality and justice in the Treasure State, among them the members of Montana’s Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs. Organized in 1921, the federation became particularly active after World War II, and from 1949 to 1955 it led the campaign to pass civil rights legislation in Montana. After years of efforts, a bill banning segregation in places of public accommodation ultimately passed in 1955, but only after the state senate stripped the penalties for violating the law making it a mostly symbolic victory. #MartinLutherKingDay #photooftheday #MTHist #MLKDay #MLKDay2018 #MLK Photo: MFCWC 29th Annual Convention, Great Falls, July 25, 1950, MHS Photo Archives 96-15.6

The Montana Territorial Legislative Assembly passed an act preventing betting and gambling 153 years ago today. The first piece of legislation in Montana regarding gambling specifically named the games “three card monte,” “strap game,” “thimble rig game,” “patent safe game,” “black and red game,” and “faro.” The punishments for violating this law were applied to both the persons taking part in gambling and the owner of any establishment (including tents!) that knowingly permitted gambling. #Montana #MTHist #Gambling #TBT

On Day Herd, C. M. Russell, oil on metal, ca. 1891, X1977.02.01 Early in his career Russell often would make use of nontraditional materials, ranging from birch bark to cement, when the notion struck him. The most unusual "canvas" in the Society's collection is this metal medallion that was originally part of a bank vault door. Russell spent the winter of 1880-1881 in Lewistown, where he was commissioned to produce two oil paintings for the Bank of Fergus County. #ArtAtMHS #CharlieRussell #MHSRussell #Art #Painting #Montana #MTHist #MontanaMoment

Keeoma, Charles M. Russell, oil on canvas, 1898, X1953.02.01 One consequence of Russell's tremendous popularity is the proliferation of #myths surrounding his life. History documents two great romances in Russell's life. The second was Nancy Cooper Russell, his wife of thirty years. His first love, however, was Laura Edgar. Lollie, as she was affectionately known, spent the school year in St. Louis but returned every summer to her family's ranch, where Russell worked. Laura's parents were less than enthusiastic about the budding romance between their young daughter and the itinerant cowboy. When, in 1886, the Edgar family sold their ranch and returned permanently to St. Louis, Russell was brokenhearted. As evidenced by this portrait which he painted more than half a decade after the couple's paths diverged, Russell did not quickly forget Laura. #ArtAtMHS #MTHist #MHSRussell #Art #CharlesRussell

Flatboat on River, Fort [Union] in Background, C. M. Russell, Pen and Ink, 1925 [X1952.04.09] Russell executed this drawing as part of a commission to illustrate 'The Blazed Trail of the Old Frontier', a "log" written by Agnes C. Organized by the Great Northern Railway with the assistance of the state historical societies of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Montana, the six-day excursion was held in July 1925.
