Prospectors Panning for Gold, Robert Swain, Oil on canvas, ca. 1890-1892, 2004.64.02 An article, titled "Paintings of Rare Beauty and Originality," which appeared in the Helena Weekly Herald, 21 April 1892, reported that: "[Swaim's] 'Prospectors Panning for Gold' is pronounced by connoisseurs the best #painting ever seen in #Montana .  In the foreground are two #prospectors .  One is #panning gravel at a #stream , while the other looks on with much interest at the shining #gold that glistens in the sand.  A #camping outfit is shown with #horses grazing on the #mountain side.  Beyond is a gulch with towering mountains on either side covered with pines. A glint of #sunshine penetrates the clouds, and far up the gulch can be seen a mountain mist or light shower.  The piece is most admirable and was the result of much study and practice." This painting originally hung in the California Wine House, a downtown #Helena Saloon that was owned by August Fack.  At some point the painting was damaged in a fire.  As a result, the original painting was cut down to its current size and much of the background described above was lost in the process.  In addition, the artist's signature was cut out and re-adhered in its current location. #MontanasMuseum #ArtatMHS #Art #History #MTHist #BigSkyCountry #LastBestPlace

Have you read Montana: High, Wide and Handsome? It’s typically at the top of every list of significant books about Montana. The book was published in 1943, about eight years before the author, Joseph Kinsey Howard, died at age 45 on August 25, 1951. #ReadMontana #Montana #MTHist #TBT “The noted historian Bernard DeVoto characterized Howard’s book as the most realistic and penetrating he had read in its understanding of the intermountain West. In Montana, Howard’s criticism of the Montana establishment was considered so shocking that at first it was sold only under the counter.” [Quote from the ‘Dictionary of American Biography: Supplement Five 1951-1955’. Horsky in the Valley, Robert Swaim, oil on canvas, 1902, 2004.64.01 This painting originally hung in the California Wine House, a downtown Helena Saloon that was owned by August Fack. Man Riding Horse in Snowstorm, Charles M. Russell, watercolor, 1892-1893, 1980.46.01 'Man Riding Horse in Snow Storm' is an understated piece that effectively captures a cold and brutal #winter #blizzard in which a weary #cowboy has been caught while riding across the #Montana #prairie . This bleak and potentially life-threatening situation was a dreaded event that all cowboys feared. #Russell gave the painting to his friend Bill McDonough when they and five other cowboy friends were batching together in a small cabin in #Chinook during the winter of 1892-1893. "The Hungry Seven," as they were known, spent the winter boozing it up and scraping by. Their meager provisions were supplemented by Russell's small income from sales of his #art . McDonough continued in the #cattle business, later operating his own #ranch near Culbertson on the #MissouriRiver . The small #watercolor was obviously treasured by McDonough. It has been stained, folded, and refolded many times where it must have been carried in his pocket. #MontanasMuseum #CharlesMRussell #ArtatMHS #FridayFunDay #MTHist

By the final month of World War I, the Spanish flu had reached Richland County. To prevent its spread, the county Council of Defense closed “all pool-rooms, bowling alleys, and cigar stores” as gathering places. It later prohibited the sale of ice cream, milk, or soft drinks, “on the grounds that dishes used in serving same are seldom sterilized.” The order encouraged housewives to place phone ord...ers instead of visiting stores and implored the sick to “STAY AT HOME.”#ww1  #WW1MT  #MTHist #Montana #WorldWarOne #WBW Have you gotten your flu shot yet this year? Theodore Roosevelt came to Billings in October 1918, ostensibly to support World War I’s Fourth Liberty Loan Drive. However, he primarily focused on the danger of the Nonpartisan League, the farmers’ organization supporting Jeannette Rankin’s bid for Congress on a third-party ticket. The NPL—which Roosevelt believed secretly opposed the war—promoted the state ownership of banks and grain elevators...; to Roosevelt, this smacked of “Bolshevism.” Tarred as “anti-American,” the League’s popularity plummeted. Image: Cartoon by W. #October is #Archives Month and the 2018 theme is “Documenting Medical History in Montana.” In addition to collecting archival materials and #photographs , MHS also has a collection of medical instruments such as this ornate nitrous oxide gasometer. It was used by Marysville dentist John Vincent Cole at the turn of the 20th century. One of the challenges of early #dentistry was the lack of effective and safe anesthesia. Prior to the use of nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas), an injection of a cocaine solution was sometimes used to numb a dental patient’s gums before oral surgery; alternatively, the patient was sedated with chloroform. The tank is also featured in an online exhibit, “Appropriate, Curious, and Rare: Montana History Object by Object.” [Image: Anesthesia tank, MHS Museum Collection, gift of Dr. T. C. Illustrated Letter, Hellow Sentral, watercolor, ink, paper [1986.06.22] In this self-effacing communiqué sent from New York, Russell depicts himself as a gap-toothed bumpkin uncharacteristically sporting a derby, gloves, spats, and walking cane. He also pokes fun at his aversion to modern gadgets like the telephone and the unlikelihood that he would make a long-distance call to Montana simply to gossip. When Russell penned this letter in 1907, Central Avenue turned to mud whenever Great Falls received a heavy rain. #ArtatMHS #Montana #CharlieRussell #MTHist #Drawing #IllustratedLetter

Our Photo Archives is very excited to announce the acquisition of visual materials from the Air National Guard in Great Falls. In addition to these regional #photographs , the collection also contains over 600 videocassettes from the 1980s to the 2010s. Congratulations to Natasha Hollenbach, Digital Projects Librarian, for receiving the 2018 Montana Governor's Award for Excellence in Performance for the Montana Historical Society! With quiet efficiency, Natasha Hollenbach has led the Montana Historical Society’s efforts to expand online access to historic materials. Over the past year alone, she has added more than 80,000 pages to Montana’s online repository of historic newspapers. She has directed the implementation of our online exhibit platform, the Digital Vault, and has assisted with ‘installing’ two of its major exhibits. Not stopping at making the materials accessible, Natasha instructs the public (and, MHS staff!) on how to effectively use these resources. #MontanaMoment #MontanaHistory #MTHist #Newspapers #History #Montana #BigSkyCountry #LastBestPlace #Digitization #Repository
