✨ REVIEW ✨ • SYNOPSIS: Yejide is hoping for a miracle, for a child. It is all her husband wants, all her mother-in-law wants, and she has tried everything—arduous pilgrimages, medical consultations, appeals to God. But when her relatives insist upon a new wife, it is all to much for Yejide to bear. It will lead to jealousy, betrayal and despair. • REVIEW: I adored this poignant and culturally rich story about a young couple and the lengths they are willing to go to to bring a child into the world. Their heartbreaking story unfolds via alternating perspectives and across a sweeping timeline, and features love, loss and deception. My heart broke for Yejide at every turn. The writing is beautiful and evocative—I cannot recommend this book highly enough. • RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • • • • • • • • • • #finishedreading #bookreview #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booktography #bookblogger #bookreviewer #meetmeatthelibraryreviews #mumsthewordseptember #staywithme #ayobamiadebayo

This was my top read for August! I don’t read e-books and I read this in a day! If that doesn’t tell you something than what will! It was such a gripping look at marriage in an entirely different culture to what I know. It follows Akin and Yejide who live in Nigeria and the trouble they have in their marriage while struggling to have children. I was so invested in these characters and loved the contrast of the microscopic details of their life against the chaotic political environment of Nigeria. Highly recommend! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #bookflatlay #igbooks #bibliophile #bookstagram #book #books #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #read #reading #instabook #amreading #mumswhoread #aussiereaders #bookish #bookstagramfeature #igperth #rhireadsplease #rhireads2018 #staywithme #AyobamiAdebayo #mumsthewordseptember
Book #59 of 2018 was Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo. ☆ SYNOPSIS: ☆ 'Yejide is hoping for a miracle, for a child. It is all her husband wants, all her mother-in-law wants, and she has tried everything - arduous pilgrimages, medical consultations, dances with prophets, appeals to God. But when her in-laws insist upon a new wife, it is too much for Yejide to bear. It will lead to jealousy, betrayal and despair. ☆ Unravelling against the social and political turbulence of 80s Nigeria, Stay With Me sings with the voices, colours, joys and fears of its surroundings. Ayobami Adebayo weaves a devastating story of the fragility of married love, the undoing of family, the wretchedness of grief, and the all-consuming bonds of motherhood. It is a tale about our desperate attempts to save ourselves and those we love from heartbreak'. ☆ I devoured this book in less than 24 hours. A beautiful story that deals with so many different emotions. ☆ Yejide and Akin are a prosperous couple living a good life in Nigeria. They are deeply in love and desperate to complete their family with a child, however, no matter how hard they try, they are unable to concieve. The story is told from the points of view of both Yejide and Akin and reveals the pressures that are placed on their relationship by both family and society as they take more and more desperate measures in their attempts to satisfy their own need, and society's demands, for a child. ☆ There are several plot twists throughout the story, just when you think you know where the story is going Adebayo throws another curve ball. Yejide and Akin are gradually torn apart by the events in their lives and you will share their pain! ☆ I've given this 5🌟on Goodreads as there are no options for .5🌟. Although this was an excellent read, it isn't a contender for my book of the year, so 4.5/5🌟 ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ #staywithme #ayobamiabedayo #canongatebooks #booknerd #booksmakemehappy #booksofig #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #books #booklover #bookworm #bibliophile #ilovebooks #ilovereading #bookaholic #bookish #bookishmum #read #reading #reader #mumsthewordseptember #mumsthewordbookclub
Continuing with my favourite authors theme here is a small stack of Maggie O’Farrell books (the rest of them are all out on loan). I first read her debut novel After You’d Gone when I was 16 and have eagerly anticipated each new release since. I love her style of writing, she was the first author I read that flipped between times and narrative voices throughout the whole novel with a grace that didn’t confuse, rather just made you understand the whole story, not just one characters perspective of a story. Her novels normally focus around everyday, believable family life. Highly recommend. #bookstagrammer #booksuggestions #greatreads #lovebooks #bookstagram #bookpic #readers #booksofinstagram #bookrecommendations #maggieofarrell #iamiamiam #goodreads #weekendreads #whatiread #readwhatyouown #mumsthewordseptember #bookcollection #bookcommunity #bibliophile

This story is about Yejide and Akin and their quest to have a family, it is set in Nigeria in the 198o's amongst all the political turmoil of that time. It's a heart wrenching tale of a mothers love for her child and the desperation of heartbreak. It's a sad and touching read. I wouldn't have seen this book had it not been the choice for this months @mums_the_word_bookclub #books #bookstagram #bookreview #clairet144books #mumsthewordseptember #mumsthewordbookclub #bookclub
It’s the first day of the school holidays for my kiddos today. We’re spending the day at the park where I’m hoping I’ll be able to squeeze in a reading session—that’s probably wishful thinking but a girl can dream, right?! 😂 • My next read is the @mums_the_word_bookclub September pick, Stay With Me by Ayòbámi Adébáyò. It’s been getting rave reviews from the other Bookstagrammers reading along this month, so I can’t wait to get stuck into it! • Have you read it? 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stay With Me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀. "If the burden is too much and stays too long, even love bends, cracks, comes close to breaking and sometimes does break. But when it's in a thousand pieces around your feet, that doesn't mean it's no longer love.". Set in 1980s Nigeria, the focus of the book is Yejide and Akin's marriage, told from both of their perspectives. It tells of how they want children, how their families (especially Moomie, Akin's mother) relentlessly pressurise them to have children and how it erodes their love. I took a while to get into the story, which is set against the backdrop of the social and political turbulence of coups and military rule, but I once I did I read it in a couple of days, truly invested in Yejide particularly. I loved the folk and moral tales that were interwoven, with sympathy and humour that added lightness. My heart bled for Yejide's tragedies because she endured so much and because I wanted so much for her that her world could not give. Her strength was marked against the weakness of Akin and his secrets. Yejide was dealt cruel blows and made crushing decisions, burdened by Nigeria's view of women as only mothers and wives. I struggled with the ending, without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't read it, how Yejide could have made the decision she did. Heartbreaking. This is a beautifully written and powerful debut novel. It made me hug my husband and my children a little closer. #staywithme #Ayọ ̀bámiAdébáyọ̀ #mumsthewordseptember #mumsthewordbookclub #bookclub #librarybook #bookstagram #whatheatherloves

Stay With Me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ is this month's @mums_the_word_bookclub book. I requested it at our local library, it arrived a few days ago and I'm reading it now. Born in Nigeria, Adébáyọ̀ studied Creative Writing at UEA in Norwich, where I studied History. This is her debut novel and it was published last year. The blurb describes: "Yejide is hoping for a miracle, all. Her mother-in-law wants, and she has tried everything. But when her relatives insist upon a new wife, it is too much for Yejide to bear. Unravelling against the social and political turbulence of 1980s Nigeria, Stay With Me is a story of the fragility of married love, the undoing of family, the power of grief and the all-consuming bonds of motherhood. Book 37 of 2018: Stay With Me 📚 This book is this months book choice for @mums_the_word_bookclub I have to admit I had never heard of this book and knew nothing about it. But what a fantastic book to choose. I read this book in two days (which as a mum of a toddler is an accomplishment - I can’t remember the last time I did that). I was completely gripped by the story, the abrupt narrative and the backdrop of the political landscape of 1980s Nigeria - which I knew nothing about. 📚 The book is based around the marriage of Yejide and Akin. All Yejide wants is a baby, it’s all the whole extended family want but instead of this Yejide world is unraveled and turned upside down by the introduction of a new wife. I had no idea that polygamy was acceptable in society, it’s something that you place in history. Each chapter is focused on the perspective of either Yejide or Akin, giving you a complete understanding of the struggles each face. It is emotional, gripping and an honest read. 📚 This is my favourite type of book, it is character driven, placed in a clear historical setting and a truthful account of what some people go through. As a debut novel this is fantastic, I can’t wait to read more of her novels. An excellent read. #staywithme #ayobamiadebayo #canongatebooks #mumsthewordseptember #goodreads #guardianbooks #spinebenders #bookstagram #bookclub #booksofinstagram #booksofig #booksofinsta #bookstagrammer #readwhatyouown #bookreview #bookrecommendations #book #reading #biblophile #alwaysreading #bookworm #bookish #bookobsessed #baileyswomensprizeforfiction
Morning! I have to admit this book wasn’t even on my radar until @mums_the_word_bookclub chose it to launch their new monthly bookclub. I really wanted to join in and was so happy when I managed to get a copy from my local library, with pretty yellow pages too! I’m glad I read it, as it’s taking me out of my reading comfort zone, but I didn’t love it. It was a 2.5 stars for me up until part 4 and that pushed it up to 3. Just when you think you have this book figured out, something else happens. It’s always interesting to read about different cultures. This book is set in 1980’s Nigeria, where it was acceptable and even encouraged that men had multiple wives. And I’m always happy to read different female authors, this being her debut. An interesting read, but not one I would revisit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #books #bookcover #bookish #booksofinstagram #reading #goodreads #bookworm #booklover #bibliophile #librarylove #bookphotography #bookcommunity #booksinthewild #bookoutside #mumsthewordseptember #mumsthewordbookclub
I have never been so moved by an audiobook. Adjoa Andoh truly brings these characters to life: every cry of anguish, every exclamation of joy; the despair, the rage, the elation. I am so excited to start this months @mums_the_word_bookclub September pick - ‘Stay with Me’ by @ayobamidebayo I won’t lie, I’m a little nervous as it is our first book choice so the pressure is on! ☀️ I will hold my hands up and say it isn’t the sort of book I would normally go for. But hey, isn’t that the beauty of a book club - to push yourself to read away from your norm!? That’s another reason why I love working with @busymamabookclub on this venture. Since we started chatting she has opened me up to so many new authors and titles I wouldn’t have normally chosen. My husband thinks she is a bad influence - but I think she is ok with that! 🤣 ☀️ So, who is joining us this month to read our first book club pick? Have you already read it? New Audiobook that I’m listening to is Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo. I am listening to this book because I wanted to join in @mums_the_word_bookclub book club! I am only 1 hour and 13 minutes into it but I like it. It takes place in Africa and is about a young woman who has been married for 4 years and with the pressure of having children her husband’s family brings in another wife “his second wife” to bear children. Polygamy is not something the main character agrees with and it begins to strain their relationship. The idea of polygamy has always interested me, not that I want to be in polygamy, just how other people do it so this is so interesting to me so far. #QOTD : anyone read this one or have any recommendations on books like this comment below. #mumsthewordseptember #bookclubread #instagrambookclub #audiobookstagram #audiobook
