The famous Ishtar Gate in the #Pergamonmuseum
in Berlin is a reconstruction of the original entrance to the city of Babylon, built by king Nebukadnezar II.
Although most of the original gate was lost over the millennia, the reconstruction includes some of the once 575 original animal figures.
Among the exhibited animal reliefs are 42 dragons and bulls, as well as different ornamental bands, which were put together out of excavated fragments.
While the wild bull is known as a fertility symbol, the dragon belongs to Marduk, the god of the Babylonian kingdom and celestial ruler of the city. In favor of modern restoration, the additions are made clearly visible.
