been listening to this mac miller tiny desk concert a lot recently. haven't had much exposure to his stuff in the past but this 15 min life session really impresses me. especially the way in which he is able to set two totally different moods in the last two songs. the first being very joyful, perfectly complemented by thundercats insane bass playing, and the second really transporting his struggles through his lyrics and the string section. very impressive. check it out, it's worth your time. #macmiller #music #npr #nprtinydesk #musicrecommendation #thundercat
Confession: I’ve pretty exclusively been listening to the Spotify Singles: Covers station on repeat lately. I mean…who doesn’t love a good cover?! But I need a new soundtrack for long days spent packing all of our moving boxes, unpacking, and setting up our new house over the next few days (with a couple of 1.5 hour drives thrown in there for this weekend’s wedding). What are you listening to these days that fits that bill? 🎶

RECOMMENDATION: Stromae - Papaoutai
GENRE: Pop • Synthpop
Papaoutai is a French song by Belgian artist Paul Van Haver, better known as Stromae. This is a pretty old song, coming out in 2013. It begins with a pretty sad piano intro, before progressing into a mood that’s better described as upset. In the first half, the song details a young boy asking where his father has gone. The song title in reality means “dad, where are you,” but it’s misspelled as a child would. In the second verse, Stromae gets angry at the irresponsibility of most fathers, and how they abandon their children. This song can be seen as a reflection of Stromae’s own childhood, as he lost his father to the Rwandan genocide in 1994 (Wikipedia). He was often upset and enraged at the fact that he didn’t have a father while he was growing up, when so many of his peers were out playing with theirs. This emotional outrage is portrayed very well in the song, and lends a voice to the sad reality of today’s society. “Hey? Tell us who huh?; Everybody knows how to make babies; But nobody knows how to make dads”
