Rare sandhill sighting 🤩 A nearly all white, leucistic sandhill crane was spotted in central Florida. Leucism is a condition where the pigmentation cells in an animal do not develop properly, resulting in white patches on the animal or completely (or mostly) white creatures. Albinism is a different condition that usually causes the eyes to be pink or red and causes the animal to be completely white. The Florida sandhill crane lives in pastures, open prairies and freshwater wetlands. They can be present in many urban areas and some unlikely places such as golf courses, airports and suburban subdivisions. Several stone crab violations 🦀 While on water patrol, our officers conducted a resource inspection on three individuals fishing under a bridge. One of the subjects was found to be in possession of 10 whole stone crabs. Not only were these crabs out of season, but they were undersized and one was an egg-bearing crab! The subject who possessed the illegal crabs was cited accordingly for his violations and the crabs were released back into the water alive. Red tide cleanup 🌊 We are continuing to monitor the red tide affecting southwest Florida and, at Gov. Rick Scott’s direction, have mobilized available resources to respond to this issue. To assist with red tide cleanup efforts, we have waived rules through Executive Order allowing the removal of dead fish – regardless of applicable bag, size, or possession limits or of season or area closures – from shoreline, inshore or nearshore areas that have been affected by red tide in the following counties: Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough and Pinellas. The recreational season will be Aug. 10-12 and Aug. 17-19 in Atlantic federal waters (beyond 3 nautical miles from shore). Each day of the season provides an opportunity for our researchers to collect biological data from harvested red snapper. If a researcher approaches you at the dock, we appreciate you sharing your catch information with us! 174 pythons & counting removed by contractors! 🐍 Did you know pythons are not native to the Sunshine State and that they prey on native wildlife including birds, reptiles and even mammals as large as a full-grown deer?! Throwback Thursday to the old days of taking my nephew fishing. With my first little one on the way and all that’s happening with our water quality issues and the fishkills, it worries me that I may not get to pass down the traditions of hunting and fishing to my own children. That bass was absolutely tiny, but when I handed the rod over to my little buddy you’d think he won the lottery. Years later he’s still talking about it. I want this not just for my children, but for all the future generations of families that call Florida their home and share a passion for the outdoors. WAKE UP FLORIDA ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️ Turtles dying by the dozen too. This is a tragedy and if you don’t care about the animals, care about tourist dollars going away from the state. That will hurt your pocket, but not the pockets of elected officials. Also sign up for the @myfwc bulletins where you can get up-to-date red tide information and other important updates. You as homeowners need to do your part too. Please refrain from using #nitrogenfertilizer for your yards. Florida is suffering. We are plagued with a devastating and deadly red-tide algae and drift algae that is killing our wildlife who depend on our clean water for survival. Fish, birds, turtles, dolphins, manatee are washing up on our shorelines and dying in our rivers, canals and backyards. It's real and it's horrific. Our state has been declared a state of emergency but solutions are slow and the deadly toxins are taking over fast. More to come on future posts. Enjoy this beautiful great blue heron. Waterspout wonder 🌪🌊 Our officers never know what they will see while out on the water…like this waterspout! A waterspout is a whirling column of air and water mist, sometimes described as a tornado over water. If you see a waterspout while on the water, exercise extreme caution and keep your distance. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the best way to avoid a waterspout is to move at a 90-degree angle to its apparent movement.
