I recently came across an interesting paper (citation at the bottom of this post) that demonstrated the above title, something that has made intuitive sense for quite some time but hasn't been shown much in the literature.⠀
The paper in question examined the difference between mesenchymal stem cells in the nucleus pulposus (the inner part of each disc in your spine) of degenerated discs and non-degenerative discs. Compared to degenerated discs, stem cells in non-degenerated discs: ⠀
// had higher rates of proliferation⠀
// had higher potential to migrate towards site of injury⠀
// had a higher expression of 'stemmess' genes⠀
This paper adds to a growing body of research that suggests that chronic injuries may not heal well because of changes in the local stem cell niche. Normally, when you injure an area of the body, the stem cells that are in that same area respond and help to repair the damage. However, chronic repeated injuries can deplete the local stem cell niche, not in terms of their numbers, but in terms of their ability to function.⠀
This is why stem cell injections can work very well in certain situations where the local stem cell niche may be depleted.⠀

Lost my best friend Sage this past week. She was 15 1/2 years old and was the best exercise buddy a person could have. Hiking was her absolute favorite exercise, but she would swim with me too. We hiked everywhere! She even got to go to the dog park on the ocean attached to Trumps golf course in California! Not on purpose, the NHL was on strike and my brothers played at the Staples Center and it was the only dog park around... but still. She hiked Sedona, Jerome, Muir Woods, Durango and many other cool places. One can never replace a best friend like her. When I am up and walking again, fingers crossed 🤞 I will take her and leave a little bit on each of her favorite hikes. She couldn’t fight with her body any longer she had already survived a stroke, melanoma and car accident, at 15 lymphoma finally took her. But she leaves me with a bit of strength, I know her body couldn’t make a comeback, but somehow in this tragedy I can finally see that mine might. I may have the strength to come back from all of this, I may get to hike those trails again, take those dance classes... Sage will always be with me in my heart, hopefully giving me the strength to continue moving forward, for her. .

Some conditions I have come across this quarter: cervical, prostate, and thyroid cancer, Ulcerative Colitis, Lyme’s Disease, Mood and Personality Disorders, Diabetes, HTN, hyperlipidemia, and so much more. One of the most important skills I have been practicing in clinic is how to LISTEN, to be present with the patient and to be intentional in each shift.

I tend to talk a lot about the effects of exogenous corticosteroid use because the sheer volume of patients who see me after several failed corticosteroid treatments.⠀
One of the side effects that I haven't talked much about, but applies heavily to anyone over 40 years old, is the impact of elevated cortisol levels on bone health. ⠀
In your body, cortisol is the catabolic hormone, meaning that it breaks down just about anything it needs for energy. This is more pronounced in states of starvation, however, this can also occur even when energy balance is net neutral. In the latter situation, there can be a shifting of nutrients throughout the body as cortisol is balanced by your androgen hormones. ⠀
Specifically, cortisol triggers the breakdown of bone in order to free up amino acids to be used for gluconeogenesis. While this may be helpful if you were stranded on an island with no food and you needed energy to try and figure out how to get off the island, this doesn't accomplish much in a well-nourished and well-fed adult. So, oral and injectable corticosteroids increase bone breakdown, and if this continues long enough can reduce bone mineral density and lead to osteopenia and osteoporosis. ⠀
Both oral and injectable corticosteroids all act like cortisol in the body, with some of them acting even more strongly than cortisol due to its binding strength and how long it takes for the compound to be eliminated in your body. ⠀
This means that chronic stress, inducing high levels of cortisol for a long period of time, can act similarly to injected or oral steroids because the body sees just about the same thing - elevated levels of glucocorticoids.⠀

Avoid processed sugar. Eating even small amount of sugar can feed the wrong bacteria, screwing up all of the work you’ve put into your health and fitness. I’m 14 days into NO sugar with the exception of complex carbs and small amounts of low glycemic fruits like blueberries. I find that eating lots of fiber at night helps with cravings because it makes you feel full! ▫️▫️▫️▫️
There’s an intimate connection between gut health, looking better naked and performing at your best. If your gut health is poor, you’re likely to be overweight. If it’s exceptional, you’re likely to be thin. So, DUH, find a way in which to get exceptional gut health! Can you believe it’s almost that time again?! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and SNC will be offering our yearly discount on our Breast Thermography imaging services in honor of that! Normally this service is $265 but if done during the month of October, you will receive $50 off, bringing it to $215. This includes the imaging appointment and interpretation of your images. Following that a doctors appointment can be scheduled here at SNC or with your regular doctor (if they are familiar and comfortable going over this type of lab work.) What is Breast Thermography?? It is a radiation-free alternative to mammography. A series of infrared images are taken while exposing the body to both hot and cold temperatures to capture how the blood vessels in the breasts respond to this stimulation thus showing if there is problematic grouping of blood cells that could be pre-cancerous or cancerous. These infrared images can detect tumors with a 2mm diameter, the size of a grain of rice and 10 times smaller than the size detected by manual breast exam. There are many preventative measures that can be taken to then improve the breast health and tissue.
