The #popupstorywalk at St. Edward's is so fun! We did the story walk loop, reading the pages aloud as we reached them, and then did the most difficult hike the park offers, totaling 2.78 miles and 522 feet of elevation gain. I haven't been very active at all this quarter, with all of the demands of school, and just getting out of the habit. But we really loved hiking today and are hoping to do more of it this winter! Sometimes you need to kick Detox and Drainage up a notch. New breakfast idea 💡 for your week: “Mood Boosting Breakfast Bowl.”💥 This recipe (courtesy of @drmarita_nd ) uses one of my all-time favourite star ingredient ⭐️: AMARANTH 🙌🏽. This delicious ingredient is a high source of plant-based protein. 🌱 💪🏽 The protein contained in amaranth is of an unusually high quality, providing nine grams for one cup of cooked grain. 🌟 🌟 🌟 Amaranth contains carbohydrates and vitamin B6, which help boost the brain’s natural feel-good chemicals, called seratonin. 🙌🏽 🧠 🌟 It is really easy to make. 🌟💕😋💪🏽🙌🏽❤️🌱😍🍁😋 INGREDIENTS •1 cup amaranth, soaked for at least 8 hours •2 cups coconut milk •1 Tablespoon maple syrup •2 teaspoons cacao powder •1 vanilla bean, seeds scraped out •1/2 teaspoon cardamom •Pinch of salt To garnish: Raw cacao nibs, raw walnuts, extra honey and dried coconut chips INSTRUCTIONS Soak amaranth in filtered water in the refrigerator overnight, or for at least eight hours. In a small sauce pan, mix together the soaked amaranth, coconut milk, honey, cacao powder, vanilla, cardamom and salt. Heat over medium-high heat until boiling, making sure to stir frequently to prevent burning. Once boiling, turn heat to low, cover the pan and allow to simmer for about 15-18 minutes. Turn heat off, leave the lid on the pan and let the porridge thicken for about 10 minutes. Divide the porridge between two bowls. Top with raw cacao nibs, raw walnuts, extra honey and dried coconut chips. Without a brain, you would not know what pain is. I understand that you could apply that statement to literally everything in your life because we wouldn't be here without a central nervous system, but it's really important to create this framework for pain.⠀ ⠀ To some degree, pain is not a physical exam finding, but rather it's a perception that is caused by physical exam procedures. Pain is also not an imaging finding, so you can't see pain on an MRI, ultrasound, Xray, or CT. You can see things that might cause pain, or predispose a patient to a painful condition, but that is not always the case.⠀ ⠀ The beauty of this statement is that it helps us move away from just treating the tissues when we are working with patients who have pain. In 2007 Kellogg, when faced with a lawsuit, agreed to stop using popular cartoon characters to market their sugary cereals. While we may not see Sponge Bob or Elsa on the boxes now, how is this any different? Most little girls I know (and some little boys) aged 2 and above LOVE rainbows and unicorns. This rainbow-maned unicorn even caught my eye when walking through Costco today. Of course as an adult I know better than to buy a food based on its cute package. But this is doing nothing to slow the obesity epidemic in kids, with nearly 20% of American children considered obese. Not to mention the dyes and other harmful additives in such foods that are associated with behavioral issues like hyperactivity. The food industry wants us to believe they have our backs in providing families with healthy foods but I’d like to argue that this is not true. While Kellogg is clearly not the only big food company to deceive the public, it’s especially maddening because around the same time as the lawsuit mentioned above they were touted as being pioneers in the industry in regards to changing the ways they marketed to kids. For example, they agreed to stop marketing foods to kids that had more than 12 grams of sugar per serving. This “magic cupcake” - flavored unicorn cereal has 11 grams of sugar per serving but that doesn’t make up for the hydrogenated oils, genetically modified grains, and ample food dyes in this product. I’ll step off my soap box now (or cereal box for that matter 😁) but I encourage us all to think for ourselves in regards to how we feed our families. Are we fueling the epidemic of chronic disease or are we changing it for our kids’ future? This vanilla chia pudding is about the easiest thing on the planet to make and tastes fantastic with mixed seasonal fruits! Perfect for breakfast, snack, dessert or a light lunch! 😇 ••• INGREDIENTS • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (use your favorite) • 1/2 cup chia seeds • 1gr of Natural Shilajit • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean powder or seeds of 1 vanilla bean • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or coconut, turbinado or organic pure cane sugar, optional • 1 ts hemp seeds ••• INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place ingredients in container or bowl and mix well. Place covered in the refrigerator and mix every 1-2 hours until set. Mixing is important since the seeds will fall to the bottom of the container if not shaken or stirred every now and then it won’t set properly. Keep refrigerated, will last up to 5-6 days. 2. Serve as you like. 3. Serves 2 – 4.

Vitamin C, probiotics, and rooibos together are excellent for overall glow, skin rejuvenation, hydration/replenishment and for maintenance of the skins natural pH balance. This clay mask is well-known to be powerful in the sense it works to really pull out all dirt and bacteria that may be hiding deep beneath the skin and are troublesome to remove. It’s also great for insect bites.

Movember Fact #17 🚹 Most advancements and therapies we see in medicine oftentimes being with a repetitive observation. Although it isn’t quite mainstream just yet, optimal testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) levels are starting to gain attention. But taking it a step further, the T to E ratio is starting to show up in the literature, and we’re learning it may be connected to inflammation and heart disease. 🚹 A recent study came out showing something we see often in medicine. Men with a lower T:E ratio (meaning lower T and higher E) were at an increased risk of stroke, major adverse cardiac events and increase levels of inflammatory biomarkers like CRP and IL-6. 🚹 It is inarguable, men with metabolic syndrome (MetS)/diabetes have a significant increased risk of CVD. But could there be a hormonal component? I think there may be. These findings are even more pronounced in men with a higher BMI. When E2 levels are increased in comparison to T levels, it means several things to me: •High induces aromatase which leads to higher E2 levels. •T:E2 ratio is another way to assess risk. •Testosterone may be protective in CVD and MetS. 🚹 These are important things to keep in mind, especially when looking at the whole picture. Remember, hormones and endocrinology is an art and a science, so one finding or marker does not mean everything. But it is about utilizing multiple tools to assess total risk. 📚[PMID]: 30052805

But if they are sabboting you, always buying icecream or bringing home pizza every other night...prooding and encouraging you to "just loosen up" then girl, you are fighting an uphill battle. ⠀ ⠀ Because i have seen over and over and over again women that are in this position strugle and they struggle hard... and more likely then not, they fail. ⠀ ⠀ Can you relate? ⬆️ ⠀ ⠀ Babe, you are WAY to magical to let anyone else bring you down and stop you from conquering your goals...so here is what you are going to do instead. ⠀ ⠀ 1. Have the hard conversation - explaining your goals and why they are important to you. ⠀ ⠀ 2. Talk to them about how they can help you.... for example "hey kirk, can you please not buy ice cream, i find it really hard to control myself when its in the house" ⠀ ⠀ 3. Set your boundaries and commit to them. If you are eating clean 80% of the time and making sure you exerxise 4x/week make sure your partner knows that these are hard rules for you. If they want to enjoy a pizza dinner with you it'll have to fit into that 20% indulgence (not just whenever they feel like it). ⠀ ⠀ 4. Let them know how you feel...example "kirk when you continually taunt me with cookies i feel like you dont care i am trying to change my eating habits." ⠀ ⠀ Your partner is going to be a huge predictor in your success...get them on board, have them support you, let them in on your goals and plan. ⠀ ⠀ Ps. How many of you know that foods rich in tryptophans support your serotonin levels? That means nutrient dense, rich food serve our bodies and act as a natural anti-depressant. Studies have shown consistent that people with low serotonin levels suffer from depression and anxiety which also leads to weight gain & obesity. I didn’t consider to think that food, good food, may help fight off anxiety and depression until I stopped to actually pay attention to my mood after finishing this plate. I was so happy, I even made up a song about vegetables and sang it to my husband. I’m sure he wasn’t amused. So today’s lunch plate consisted of Baby bell red peppers (orange, red & yellow) Pinto beans, zucchini, spinach, red onion, broccoli. It was cooked in olive oil on a cast iron pan and seasoned with a tiny bit of chili powder, coriander spice, s&p and garlic. I also served a spoonful of rice in the middle. Hip hip hooray! So here’s the deal. I recognize that when you find something that works for you, you want to shout it from the rooftops. If it helped you, surely it could help someone else! And that’s great. By all means, tell your story, be happy with your progress.⁣ ⁣ However, there is a worrying trend of treatment shaming among some enthusiastic folks, especially in mental health. This is when someone disparages another for, say, finding a pharmaceutical medication helpful. Or for preferring nature walks over Prozac. I’ve seen this shaming go in both directions, over “conventional” medicine and “natural” medicine.⁣ ⁣ As mentioned in a previous post, what works for you might not work for someone else, and that’s fine. What’s important is that we respect each other’s path to wellness, and avoid offering unsolicited advice.⁣ ⁣ Maybe you know someone with a comprehensive anti-anxiety toolkit that includes exercise and nervine herbs; Cheer them on! They are also packed with micronutrients like folate, potassium, iron and magnesium. These vary between beans and lentils, but they are definitely something worthy of adding into your diet, even if you’re not currently vegan. . 🥣So how do I add them in? Some dishes I enjoy are a red lentil curry, 5 bean chilli, homemade BBQ baked beans, cooking some beans with rice & veg & obviously hummus! . 🥜 You can cook from dried, which is what the measurements are above, or you can buy canned which are pre-cooked. 100g canned beans will not yield the same values per 100g as above as they are filled with water, but in generally 100g dried will become 200-250g cooked. . 🌱 I’ve included 6 popular ones above, but there’s plenty more. Overall they contain approximately 330 calories, 20-25g protein, 40-50g carbs and over 10g of fiber per 100g uncooked. A small imaging study by Dr. Sara Lazar, PhD et al examine the different impacts on brain structure and development by different mind-body tools.⁣ ⁣ The relaxation program resulted in improving areas of the brain related to deliberate control.
