This morning although it was still very cold I noticed 4 or 5 bumblebees hovering near the base of an #astelia
- some astelias look very like a #newzealand
flax ( #phormiumtenax
) but they are a completely different plant. Puzzled I peered between the leaves and saw the astelia was secretly in flagrant gorgeous flower and was drawing the bees and other insects even in the cold. Unlike the #newzealandflax
which displays its nectar-rich flowers very prominently on long woody stalks, the #astelia
(Kahaka?) conceals its flowers at the heart of its leaves. Later it will have berries which are apparently edible though bland.
