A throwback to @nigellalawson
's Caramel Croissant Pudding, from her cookbook, Nigella Express.
It's the 20th anniversary of Nigella Lawson's first book 'How to Eat", a 20 year old copy of which was recently gifted to me by my Little Peach who came bounding home a few days ago, excitedly barking he'd found "IT!", the book that's been sitting on my Amazon wishlist for some time. As he raised the book skyward, the jubilant look of victory on his face was as if he held in his hands baby Simba, in holy offering and gratitude for his arrival to the Kingdom. I half expected to see a flint tipped spear impaled through the book along with a display of masculine chest pounding.
One intriguing aspect of second hand books is remnants and clues about its previous owners, and with this one the previous owner has left inside of it a few handwritten grocery lists, expressly in the "low fat" chapter. So my mind naturally went back to Nigella's Caramel Croissant Pudding, and I made a note to myself to make it soon.
I usually do most of my cooking without cookbooks; I buy and read them like novels for the fun of being in the company of other confident eaters and cooks. It's not to say I don't learn a lot about cooking and technique from the books, I do, but what I mostly gain is a shared search for pleasure outside of the mortal coil, a sort of waking astral plane of unanimity.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer once said "Strong is fighting. It's hard, and it's painful, and it's everyday. It's what we have to do. And we can do it together". I say, we can do it together with pleasure, a principle Nigella perpetually champions as part of a balanced life; a necessary and comforting voice of reason in the face of constant messaging to fear and repent, reminding us to calm down and rejoice.
Lots of rejoicing happened over this pudding!
