Night harvests are both completely exhausting and completely magical. You will forgive me for waxing poetic here but there is a certain romantic quality to being amongst the vines at night. The darkness never seems to press too closely this time of year, instead, it tends to make you realize just how tiny you are. Jeff Newton, the founder of Coastal, says he feels similarly about night harvests. He told me once about an evening where all you could hear were the
crickets in the surrounding brush, then, all of a sudden the vineyard crews started howling at the moon. If it wasn’t for the chill of the night and the frequent laughter interrupting the howls, he said he could have been in the middle of a desert surrounded by coyotes.
The vineyard crews are so incredible. They work so hard through the night, while most of us are still sleeping. They are the real stars of the show here. When I get out in the field at night, I am always amazed at how much fun they seem to be having. Harvesting grapes is intensive work, and they do it so quickly and with such positivity. I admire these men and women so much!
