👉 La práctica de Yoga parece no terminarse nunca en lo que a aprender lecciones respecta. . Tradicionalmente, según los textos escritos sobre Yoga en la antigüedad, primero deben aprenderse los Yamas y Niyamas, o preceptos éticos, o comportamientos para con uno mismo y para con el mundo, antes de acceder al aprendizaje de asanas, o armado de posturas físicas. En parte porque es idóneo depurar ciertas conductas antes de adentrarse en el inmenso mundo del Yoga. . Hoy en día, en occidente, en la mayoría de los casos accedemos a la práctica directamente desde asanas, todo lo demás llega después, los escalones se desordenan, las prioridades se confunden, el camino trazado se arma y se desarma. Es complejo, posiblemente todos los profesores y practicantes lo percibamos de esa forma, y a medida que lo transitamos se va volviendo cada vez más laberíntico (sí es cierto que cada tanto caen fichas como anclas que nunca jamás se olvidan). . Hoy queremos destacar dos principios fundamentales de la filosofía del Yoga, dos herramientas importantísimas que si permitimos que nos acompañan en nuestra práctica personal como amuletos nos van a ayudar a ahorrarnos confusiones. . Ahimsa aboga por la no violencia. En un sentido amplio se refiere a la no violencia por toda la vida que nos rodea. Pero para empezar por nosotros mismos implica también cuidarnos en nuestras prácticas. Dialogar constantemente con nuestro cuerpo, entender y respetar nuestras limitaciones. Y ahí es donde nos encontramos con el segundo concepto que es Santosha, el contentamiento y la satisfacción. Otra piedra fundamental de la práctica, conformarnos con el alcance de nuestra destreza física sin llegar a la sobrexigencia o a la frustración, manteniendo el desapego por los resultados. . Al fin y al cabo el aprendizaje está en transitar la disciplina con paciencia y perseverancia, otras dos prácticas indispensables. "She believed she could so she became a... yoga instructor" . . . Thank you for the little reminder momma. Trying my best every day to be the best yogi I can be everyday. I was feeling so good yesterday, I woke up and went to ashtanga and the owner of my studio asked me to teach the first round of sun salutations! It felt amazing being up there leading a bunch of beautiful souls. Then right after yoga I went and meditated in the rain for a little bit. I got so lost in the raindrops I forgot I was sitting outside, freezing cold, and wet. All of a sudden I was back in my body on Earth shivering I was so cold but prior to that I couldnt even feel it. Then last night happened. A complete 180 to what I was feeling earlier that morning. I started getting into old thinking habits and doing some really not smart things. And emotionally I even hurt someone because I lied. So quickly everything blew up in my face and it felt like everything in me was frozen. I couldnt think for shit. And was getting so down on myself so fast. When I should have just talked to the person about the whole situation instead of thinking I could keep things in the dark. Yoga is not just about fancy asanas. Its about being true to yourself and others around you. We all make mistakes but it's our job to learn from those mistakes and try to better ourselves for next time. It's time to be the best yogi we can be on and off the mat. Remembering that yoga is a overall lifestyle and not just your morning workout. As much as I practice what I preach, I do mess up. I look out for myself sometimes more than others and will put my feelings before others as well. Remember you are a reflection of all those who come into your life. Reflect on to those what you would like to come back around to you. Breathe. Everything is going to be okay. Tapas - Austerity and Discipline - Tapas is the third of the niyamas of yoga. The root of the word, “tap” means “to burn” which is often translated to reflect a burning desire or passion toward something. - If we want to create change in our lives, it requires tapas. A burning desire. A passion for whatever it is, and the discipline to show up each day to make that’s change happen. It requires that we have courage and resilience even when things aren’t going as planned. - People ask me all the time how I eat such a healthy, delicious vegan diet. The answer, as with most things is that it totally requires tapas. Creating healthy vegan meals is a skill that needs to be learned, and practiced every day. - If you’re committed to eating a healthy, whole foods vegan diet, that tastes super freaking awesome, there is some effort required in your part to create time and space to prep and make your meals. Today is a very emotional day for this #isleña . On Sept 20th, 2017 (1 year ago) a cat.5 hurricane called Maria passed through the Caribbean, affecting many islands. One of them was #PuertoRico , my home land. It’s hard not to look back. Human after all, mixed feelings arise and memories still hunt me. I was there.🇵🇷. . At 10pm I went to bed, unaware, to say the truth; would’ve never imagined the aftermath of such a natural phenomena: for months... no electricity, fresh food, clean water, gas, unrooted trees, broken infrastructure, cars upside down. Everything changed in one night. . . Waking up to the sounds of 125mph winds opened my eyes to understanding how Mother Nature is really in charge of everything. We are just guests here. #Pachamama is sad + mad w/ humanity for being ungrateful after all that has been given to us. . . But, what can we do to change the damage already done? In yoga, we work with our physical bodies in order to understand and balance the internal layers of ourselves. . It is a journey and there are imperfections. It also allows me to get rid of this ingrained need for my own perfection. . This week we worked to refine some new points of alignment. . Keeping the weight in the heels, especially the left heel. Drawing the left thighbone back to keep the hips and knees even. Have some time this morning or in the evening? Today’s classes: 9:15AM Happy Medium Flow 4:15PM HOT Yoga Barre I was trying to find a way of describing what Santosha(one of the Niyamas) meant to me. In the most simplest form it means: contentment. Being grateful for what you have and do not have, not wanting what another person has etc... But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive for more, don’t stop dreaming and making goals and doing what you can to see those goals come to light. It’s learning to trust the process, being patient and living as best you can where you are until what you’re working towards surfaces and not stopping there, but always finding ways to better yourself and your life. I was talking to a friend about my central moral tenet today, and essentially it boils down to: “Don’t be an asshole.” But there are so many yamas and niyamas in the 8-limbed yogic path; why? Because there are so many ways to be an asshole. Summed up for you as follows is MY irreverent and brief understanding of these first two limbs: AHIMSA: Don’t be an asshole by harming yourself or others. SATYA: Don’t be an asshole by lying or obscuring the truth. ASTEYA: Don’t be an asshole by stealing from yourself or others. BRAHMCHARYA: Don’t be an asshole by indulging to excess. APARIGRAHA: Don’t be an asshole by grasping or hoarding things, people, or goals not meant for you. SAUCHA: Don’t be an asshole by being impure/unclean of words, spirit, or actions. SANTOSHA: Don’t be an asshole by failing to bask in the moment when things are really good. TAPAS: Don’t be an asshole by failing to be disciplined enough to put in the work a good life requires. SVADHYAYA: Don’t be an asshole by not being reflective about your place in the universe and your relative adherence in what is right. I have cellulite. I have a bit of a tummy. I have love handles. I have worry lines, etc. Working out + practicing yoga consistently has helped me to feel healthy, but still I have things that need “improvement”. A few months ago I would be hyper focused on these things, saying “I hate my legs, I’ve been doing X,Y & Z to change them but it still doesn’t look good” or asking others “can you notice ___ in these shorts/shirt?”. Saying I love these things about my body is a lie, because I don’t love them. I don’t look at them and say “omg, YES! Cellulite is my favorite. I wish I had more”, but I no longer hate these aspects of my body. I’m learning each day to just be okay with them. We all have things we don’t like about ourselves, but why? Why are we so hard on ourselves? Because more often than not, other people do NOT care. And if they do, then surround yourself with better people. Eventually I think I’ll learn to love every aspect of my body, but until then I’m okay with being okay with it. No estoy siendo floja, no estoy alimentando la comodidad. Esta no es la manera en la cual se camina hacia el despertar. Pero hoy no he podido abrir mi mat. Hoy ha sido uno de esos días, you know. Mi cuerpo pidiendo a gritos un poco de lo que ven en la imagen. He pasado el día haciendo diferentes actividades, desde enseñar, taller del carro, transporte a mis hijos, cocinar, estudiar, mercado, etc. Que hacer cuando la vida te pide presencia y simplemente no se puede decir: ah ya va voy al mat por dos horas y luego si me da tiempo hago lo que se necesitaba para ya. Me siento complacida por haber caminado este sendero de manera rigurosa durante los primeros años, esa determinación vehemente y ferviente construyeron la fortaleza interior que eleva hoy mi espíritu, todo ese fuego ha quemado literalmente tanta tristeza, ignorancia, vanidad, narcisismo, y pare de contar - pero lo más preciado es que al perder todo eso he ganado espacio para que la calma, la sabiduría, la paciencia, el sosiego y la confianza se asentaran. Ahora hablemos de ahimsa para darle sentido a este post. La práctica de #ahimsa nos enseña a cultivar en nosotros compasión, amabilidad, oído al lenguaje del cuerpo. Ahimsa es el primer código ético y moral que nos presenta el Ashtanga Yoga. Comenzar en nuestro propio templo es la manera más auténtica y coherente. Es a través de la experiencia en nuestra propia piel que podemos entender el significado del primer sub limbo que nos presenta Patanjali. OJO ! Lo mas probable es que antes de irme a la cama termine el día con un saludo al sol. Tiene sentido esto? Pues no lo sé. Este camino no es el camino de la razón, pero si del corazón y el discernimiento. Para mí un saludo al sol significa: aquí estoy Isvara, hoy esto es lo que puedo físicamente ofrecerte y lo hago con la más pura intension de continuar cultivando esta difícil de detener expansión de conciencia. Consistencia es presencia. Ayer di todo en el mat, y así es cada día, sin embargo hoy no ha sido así y sin segundos pensamientos ni culpas comparto esta realidad que tal vez a muchos puede inspirar. Al practicar ahimsa con nosotros lo hacemos con nuestro entorno 🙏🏻

It is one of the #Niyamas or self -practices which yogis try to adhere to. 👌The word Tapas comes from the Sanskrit very "tap" which means "to burn". 2. Niyamas: deals with the internal body, mind, and spirit. In other words how we respect and treat ourselves. The 5 niyamas keeps us mindful of what you need to nurture yourself to grow including but not limited to self I do scoop line and inner strength to transform through yoga. -Shaucha (Purification) What we consume is what we are..we've all heard the saying you are what you eat and it's true! What you ingest mentally and physically affects your state of mind and prevents attainment of real wisdom and spiritual liberation. As an a practice, pranayama (breath work), and meditation cleanse the mind and affect our internal purification. Our diet, choice of environment/friends/books we read add to the outside impurities we bring into our body. Surrounding yourself with good people, positive healthy environments, and focusing on our mental state brings Shaucha. -Samtosha (contentment) Being grateful and content with what we have.  Consciously being aware of what we're attached to helps us to get on the path to contentment. Material possessions make us happy for a little while then we get used to that thing and want something new. True everlasting joy and happiness comes from within. Being content frees our mind from wanting things to be different and reveals gratitude within us for each moment. -Tapas (asceticism) Self discipline. This is intense self discipline and attainment of willpower. Tapas is what drives us to do what we don't want to do on a daily basis but builds consistency that leads to success. Builds will power and strength to help us stay dedicated. -Svadhyaya (self study) Study of self through life experiences and studying of sacred and spiritual text. Using all of the above as guide to our true and highest self. Self study requires you to see yourself beyond the moment and realize your connection with the holy divine. -Ishvara Pranidhana (devotion) Dedication and surrender to a higher power, something much bigger than ourselves. We must let go of Ego and our need to identify with self. Surrender. Our yoga practice and everything we benefit from it shall be used as and seen as an offering to something greater than ourselves. Wednesday Wisdom: The Niyamas and Santosha continue with Patanjali’s sutra 2:42. The true essence of yoga is in this sutra. When we can find contentment in any situation we master our emotions and overcome them for a deeper joy. This is not to say we will not experience emotions, but that we do not let them control us. When we learn to be centered at all times our lowest points become just another hiccup that will pass and our highest points become more relished as we are more present to take them in. Here is a video demonstrating modified Viparita Karani (Upside-down/Legs up the wall Pose) which is an excellent calming posture. This pose releases stress physically and energetically. it is an excellent compliment to a restorative practice, as a cool down before Savasana, or just any time you need to calm yourself. Been listening to the book ‘The Power of Meaning’ lately. A quote just got me “don’t hold onto happiness, as you’ll be sure to loose it. Don’t try to let go of suffering as you’ll be sure to keep it. Allow yourself to just be & just feel.” Holding onto our feelings of happiness and letting go of our sadness doesn’t allow us to have peace, calm and contentment in our lives. It doesn’t make us happy if we only have happy things. We would never know the difference between happiness and sadness if we didn’t experience both. So it’s ok to feel, it’s ok to be happy and it’s ok to feel sad. Allow yourself to let go of holding onto either feeling and just be. When you do this you allow yourselves to truly find your meaning.
