Throwback to Saturday's #UniversalYoga class - where I had time to give a proper #savasana followed by #pranayama for students to feel the #posteffect of the practice! Sometimes, it's hard to explain that at the end of the day, it's really not so much about how #flexible you can become, but how #intense you can actually feel sensations, because that means that you're well aware of the other #koshas (shells) of your body, which will lead you to a lot more discoveries later! The problem is, of course, the awareness of all these. Too often, the physical shell becomes the only focus, where yoga teachers delve into other disciplines from gymnastics, healing, therapy, and other movement practices. There is nothing wrong with this - except for the fact that it does not educate the student about the numerous possibilities that lie ahead. It's like teaching someone that all that matters is the decimal system - but there's a lot more than that! Logarithmic scales, hexadecimal systems, and binary systems - the core that drives all of our technology today. However, it's not about assigning blame - the globalization of yoga has its pros and cons. If not for the existence of commercialized yoga studios, I would never have been exposed to yoga in the first place, much less discover and eventually learn about the entirety of the yoga system through #AndreyLappa , creator of the UY system. (Pretty sure @gohlanlin will agree with me on this 😁😁😁). The issue at hand is to address the cons, where focus is taken away from the core principles of yoga, such as #yamas and #niyamas , studying of the #sutras , and generally, diving really deep into the core essence of yoga, rather than just skimming the surface that is physical yoga. I’ve been discussing with a few yoga teachers lately about how yoga is being taught, concluding that the asana (postures) seem to be the primary focus along with what yoga clothing brand you are wearing when practicing. I’ve personally noticed this a lot where the “trendy processed yoga” seems to be the in thing to practice. But here’s the thing... Asana is only one of the eight limbs of yoga. There is also Yama, Niyama, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. _______________________________________________________ We forget that the asanas are there as tools and only make up a small portion of what yoga is. They are there to help you connect with your body, breath, and to carry what you’ve learned off the mat and into the world. Advanced asanas mean nothing if you are forcing your body into them and not incorporating it all as a whole practice. As @thesoberglow once said: do a handstand on your truth instead of a pretty rock, it will go further. #beyondtheasana
Ok, yea, twisting your body into weird shapes and finally being able to touch your toes or nail that handstand, that's cool... . But what really impresses me are deep breaths, grounded feet, mindful movements, and introspection. Awareness, learning, dedication, and doing the work. Watching the practice being embodied. . Doing the work on your mat so you can take your practice out into the world and navigate your daily grind mindfully, skillfully, and with integrity...THAT'S what gets me. . Bakasana to Sirsasana II is one of my favorite transitions. I love how the momentum from Bakasana pulls you forward and sets you up for the inversion. In YTT, we were assigned to pick a sutra from part I and II that resonated with us. After much reading, rereading, and researching, (because seriously reading the sutras is like reading an early edition of the King James Bible) I chose Tapas as the sutra that I most resonated with. . Tapas is the practice causing positive change, or self-improvement. It means “to heat.” The heat from tapas is thought to burn away impurities and allow us to live authentically. Most people connect with tapas through exercising (such as asana), but it is so much more than that. . Tapas is created anytime you are feeling heat from discomfort, the good discomfort. You might feel tapas when breaking an old habit, changing your direction in life, getting out of your comfort zone, opening up to new ideas, self-discipline, going for that dream you’ve had for years, etc. . On the other side of the discomfort tapas creates is a positive and lasting transformation. . Chaturanga is perfect for producing tapas. Every time you do a chaturanga imagine building tapas, creating positive change, and becoming the best version of you.

Tapas translated as an austerity, but exact meaning of Sanskrit term is to burn. Why do we want to burn? Why do we want to put ourselves in what seems to be uncomfortable situations? The more we do, the more we remove the veil of ignorance. Pretty much all of our suffering stems from ignorance. We might not see it at first, but the more tapas we perform, the more we see the stories we create in our mind are complete b.s. I almost didn’t wake up for my early practice today because I got to bed a little after 10pm and when my alarm went off at 5am I couldn’t imagine rolling out of bed. I also did NOT like my last two days of practice because my wrist started acting up again, my right shoulder was wonky and I was creating aallll the excuses. Had I not been studying the yoga sutras, I might have skipped today thinking I just needed rest. I am so glad I did not listen to sleepy Franci and I showed up on my mat at 6:30. The practice ended up being my favorite practice of the week. It had its very rough moments, but it was enlightening to see all of my frustrations and fears about my wrist being damaged again (all very ego centric) light up and BURN in today’s practice. Our body is so intelligent and if only we listened a little more closely to the things it is trying to tell us, we might be able to reduce our suffering. The more we show up for ourselves and create these discomforts we begin to purify our system. The beauty of the asana practice is that it purifies mind and body, but your tapas doesn’t have to be insane asanas. It can be going to bed earlier, getting a full 7-8 hrs of sleep and getting up early enough to enjoy your morning instead of stumble out of bed and rush to work. It can also be turning the water to cold at the end of your shower and each day increase the length of your time under the cold water. I promise, the more we try to only seek comfort, the more frustration and suffering you will find. Take a moment to look at your day to day and observe where you can practice tapas. ALL ABOUT BALANCE // Being primarily Kapha with a very low Pitta dosha, I know I can be pretty lazy. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. I don't need to be told to "listen to my body" and to "take a break whenever I need to". If my body wants to move, I move. If it needs a break, I take a break. It honestly wouldn't bother me if my asana practice never progressed. I am happy and content with every aspect of my practice right now. I know it's not perfect, and I'm good with the fact that there is no such thing. . . BUT, does that "lazy" whatever happens way to think translate into my off the mat life? When something challenging happens, do I tend to give up to protect myself? Absolutly. No necessarily a bad thing, but not really a good thing in some situations. How many opportunities did I miss because I thought "oh whatever, I'm happy with what I have"? . . All about balance. A balance between Santosha (contentment) and Tapas (discipline). A balance between practice the poses I like, and the ones I need. 🌌 . . . P.S. I have never been known to be good at matching my clothes 😉 I honestly couldn't care less. Yoga is the science of the mind. Without awareness you allow your mind to control your thoughts and actions. Through a consistent practice you learn how to become the master of your own mind. Allowing you to live more fully and peacefully in the present moment. There are 8 limbs to yoga, asana (physical postures) only being one of them. When all are taken into account and practiced with intention life on and off the mat becomes more meaningful and purposeful. You meet your true self head on on the mat. There’s no escaping, no choreography to follow, no loud music to distract, nobody egging you on to go further, do more. It’s all up to you. Only you. You learn the power you have within in your own breath and how to use it as a guide. Yoga creates space and time for you to check in with yourself and discover your true potential. There is support and assists if needed but the practice is all down to the commitment you have to yourself.

The Lifting Yogi 🧘‍♀️ . I have studied Yogic Science extensively at two premium institutes in India : 1) Diploma in Yogic Science at Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Ayurveda, Navi Mumbai (2014 - 2015) 2) Teacher Training Certification at Kaivalyadham, Lonavala (2017) . Yoga or 'Yog', as we call it in Sanskrit and Hindi, is a philosophy. It is a way of living, thinking, breathing and eating. In short, it is a lifestyle. . Any form of religion we practise also indirectly becomes our lifestyle. The religion I identify with is 'Yog'. . The 5 Yamas and Niyamas are ingrained in my mind (although I recently re-introduced animal products in my diet due to protein and B12 deficiencies), I often see myself questioning my reasoning and actions based on them. . If you practise Yoga (asanas) as an exercise form, it is still imperative to combine it with some other form of exercise. Walking, swimming, cycling, aerobics or strength training and running, like I do, can all be combined to simultaneously train the mind and body . Yog, alone, may not help you improve your body composition unless you live a life which is absolutely in sync with the Ashtangas and the 5 Yamas and Niyamas. Niyama in action- svadhyaya (study of the self). I saw this sign today while working out and it jerked me back to reality. Mental and emotional health make up one aspect of health and wellness. I’ve been trying to figure out where I want my energy to go and what kind of energy I want to surround myself with. It takes a lot of soul searching trying to figure out purpose and goals and align actions to them vs saying yes to everyone and anything. De la importancia de huir del “circo coreográfico” que a veces contamina el vinyasa Flow y de acercarnos hacia una practica y un mensaje que conmueva (y remueva) al alumno, desde la invitación al trabajo interno y no desde el reclamo “entretenido” de secuencias que cumplen su objetivo de entretener pero no el de interiorizar. Ya volteaste hacia atrás? Es el último mes del año y no puedo evitar pensar en este tipo de cosas, como hacer un recuento de el capítulo que ha sido este 2018. 💜 Donde el tema que me ha venido sonando y resonando tooodos estos meses en mi caso ha sido la honestidad y lealtad. Si, para con los demás también pero principalmente hacia mi. Y es que algo tan simple como mantener en la misma sintonía lo que piensas, dices y haces puede llegar a ser alimento mágico para tu espíritu, no existe ese vacío, no existe esa inconformidad, no existe ese “algo que no se qué es”. Si, honestidad es hablar con la verdad, y también convertirte y SER tu propia verdad, no hay cosa más dolorosa y triste que traicionarse a uno mismo, cuando eres honesto contigo es como si se abrieran señales para marcarte el camino, como si de pronto te quitaran todo el peso de encima y puedes mantener esa paz interior y esa confianza de que todo estará bien, como si se prendiera tu llama interior tan pero tan fuerte que es imposible que alguien más no lo note, porque como es adentro es afuera. ✨ ¿Cuales son los momentos en los que te recuerdas más feliz y pleno? ¿Cuales son los momentos en los que más vacío te has sentido?
