What was supposed to be two weeks of showcasing winter planning has morphed into taking care of others. Between the NorCal fires, work, and day-to-day routine, I am barely hanging on to an existence I thought was always secure. The fire damage is truly horrific. The smoke afterward impacts a million lives. The madness is that we all keep on......sigh....We processed about a hundred pounds of produce this weekend, including poblano chiles seen here, frozen into little cubes for winter. Made my favorite dish today 😍 Seven Vegetable Moroccan Stew. I have been making this since my oldest daughter was just a very little girl - she's now 18. It's a lively, nourishing recipe from Myra Kornfeld's 2005 book "The Healthy Hedonist." The past few years, I have been fortunate to have our own homegrown vegetables and herbs on-hand to make this... although, I have to admit that the real star of this dish is the saffron. I LOVE saffron so much! Probably too much 😂. .
Tonight's dish included a few substitutions, just based on what we had on-hand from our gardens. Fresh carrot greens and an heirloom sweet potato filled for carrots (ours are still small). Dried turnip greens filled in for turnips. Green beans filled in for zucchini (not in season). Heirloom bell peppers. Fresh cilantro, picked today! Local chicken.
If you make it, be sure to also make the harissa to go with it. It's delicious!
Are there any success stories from those of you who have hung tomato plants indoors? I put these up about a month ago and only a few got ripe. The garage has since frozen, so I gave up. This does mean my most successful crop this year was green tomatoes. I will have to find more recipes because my only one right now is green tomato bread. And #friedgreentomatoes
