•Amsterdam by night•
It’s impressed upon you very strongly that under no circumstances should you ever take a picture directly into a red lit window.
We witnessed why on the tour tonight, as we watched two admirers point and shot from across the canal at a young lady who immediately started banging on the frame of her door. Within seconds the guys had two policeman around them who took their phones off them and deleted the photos immediately.
According to the guide, had they been on her side of the canal their phone would have simply ended up in the canal.
Many of the sex workers in the district are native, and keep their profession a secret from their families, who they worry now will find out via social media.
Did you know the red light developed from originally a red card, which signalled the prostitute had recently been given a clear bill of sexual health? And that Amsterdam provide their sex workers with free, weekly, sexual health check ups? Also, plain clothes policemen regularly carry out random checks against any sex trafficked workers, or workers who are not there out of choice.
Amsterdam’s attitude to sex workers (formerly known as prostitutes, but not anymore) is respectful, progressive and fascinating.
