Colder weather calls for hearty warm pumpkin vegetable bean soup full of nourishment that gives a nice soothing hug to the belly :) If you are not using organic produce I recommend soaking food in a big bowl of 1:1 water and vinegar for at least 15 minutes. Prep: 15 min Bowl #1 veggies: Broccoli, kale, sweet peppers Bowl #2 beans: Soaked chickpeas and black beans for 8 hrs overnight Bowl #3 : Whole garlic cloves, red onions, sliced ginger and tumeric Sauce: Local pumpkin sauce, organic ingredients no preservatives. Can also substitute for a preservative free tomato sauce or home made. Cook: Throw into a crock pot and cook 7 hrs on low. What’s good for your soul? . On the flight home from Queenstown yesterday I reflected that part of it is about finding a healthy balance and letting go of expectations of perfectionist behaviours, especially while on holiday or travelling. . Being out of a routine can through a lot of people, including myself, into anxiety around being ‘good’ with food and exercise. I love to travel and this particular trip meant a lot to me to spend time with my family. . I knew that I may not get my 10,000 plus steps in per day, practice yoga or even sweat or have my lemon water and apple cider vinegar in the morning or get my 8 hours quality sleep or have my good dosage of greens and vitamin d. . But what I do know now is that life and quality time is short lived so make the most of those moments. Grab on to them and embrace those opportunities. Let go of daily expectations of being ‘perfect’. In each moment do the best that you can do and know that this is okay. . Some tips though for staying on track while on holiday: - Stay hydrated, water is free, make sure you get a minimum of 2 litres in per day. - Walk and bike when you can, walking and or biking allows you to see a city and surrounding areas that travelling by car can’t get to. - Don’t be afraid to ask cafes or restaurants to explain food on their menus or alter dishes for you. - Protein and good fats help with satiety levels at meal times and if you’re not sure when you will be eating next this is great tip. - Lastly I never thought I’d say this but I’ve learnt to relax somewhat in being so pedantic about particular foods but if cakes on the menu and you feel the need to have some then embrace it in that moment and enjoy the journey. . I weigh exactly the same weight in both these photos. Coincidentally the photo on the left was taken almost exactly 7 years ago to the day and I weigh about the same now (just over 150 pounds). I launched episode 11 of the podcast today (link for it is in my bio) and I promised in it that I would dig up the picture of myself when I was dieting hard, eating 1000-1200 calories per day with very low protein and fat and doing CrossFit 4-5 times per week. Fast-forward to today and my nutrition looks MUCH different.⠀ ⠀ Over the next couple days I’m going to be posting examples of what my nutrition looks like now as well as what it looked like just a few years ago when I had figured out what worked to successfully start my weight loss journey and take me to where I am today. ⠀ ⠀ This is the post that I referred to in the podcast that you could comment on whether my first solo episode was a “Hell ya!” or a “Nah” in your books. Who else can relate to the fad diets, “quick fixes” and rebounding weight gain there after? I have almost tried them all - Weight Watchers (twice), Paleo, Low Carb, Carb Backloading, restricting my calories to 1000 a day... they all play a part in how much more I know about nutrition now and how I am able to successfully navigate my own nutrition as well as give guidance and advice to others on theirs. I could say I wish I had known more back then and hadn’t gone through this rollercoaster of dieting but I truly believe it has given me so much more insight and has lead me down the path to where I am today, which I wouldn’t change for the world. Whether or not a food is “fattening” is NOT the same as whether or not a food is *healthy*. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Categorizing food as either “fattening” or “weight loss promoting” is centered around the idea that thinness is the goal. Thinness is *not* the goal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Weight does not define one’s health status. It does not define one’s worth. It does not define a person. And the media’s perpetuation of this idea is harming. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Categorizing food as “healthy” and “unhealthy” is problematic in and of itself, and I’m not promoting this as a substitution. But I want it to be clear that the two categorizations are not one and the same. Looking at food as either “fattening” or “weight loss promoting” is not a reflection of the food, but of one’s own values. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Any food can technically cause weight loss or weight gain, but only the right foods with the right mindset will provide you with the proper nourishment to flourish. The “right” food is whatever is right for you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ask yourself, will this food fuel me? Satisfy me? Bring me joy? Give me energy? Make me feel like my best, bad ass self? A healthy body and balanced mind begin with what we put in it. The food we eat literally becomes us, its energy, becomes our energy. I’ve been working through gut issues for years, and have been focusing on clean, easy to digest foods that are nourishing and high energy. Lunch today was a salad with sunflower shoots, clover sprouts, butter lettuce, and a homemade turmeric dressing. Along with a coconut curry wrap, homemade green split pea hummus, grated carrots, sprouted pumpkin seeds, and a drizzle of hemp oil (omega 3s and 6s) and some morninga powder from @maruyamajonesfarm (iron and minerals). Easy lunch today that was 👌 • I spent most of the morning (after Daniel left for work) cleaning the entire house. It desperately needed it! There is no better feeling than having a spotless house 😁 I also decided to order a few @norwex products. I cannot WAIT to try them out! I am all about reusable products and these will be perfect for just that! I'll post a picture once I get them 😎 • I made a quick salad with onion, tomato & celery. I used a little @braggsacvhealth ACV, juice from my fermented @bubbiespickles pickles, pepper and @redmondrealsalt. The chicken is @butcher_box baked in @stubbsaustin bbq sauce and some white cheddar cheese 🤤 I don't normally eat cheese, but sometimes I do enjoy a little 🧀 Lastly, I had half a bottle of @healthade jalapeno-kiwi-cucumber kombucha. SO GOOD! • I highly recommend adding kombucha into your diet. It's wonderful for gut health and adding probiotics. There are tons of different brands and flavors to choose from!
Snacking done right! Hello healthy caramel sauce and apples! What a combination. Perfect for an afternoon snack or a sweet tooth fix! . Dates are nutrient dense and chalk full of antioxidants and fiber. All the more reason to love them 💛 . Caramel Sauce recipe: 1 cup soaked dates (pits removed) 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup coconut milk 1/2 tsp vanilla Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. I fell in love with this roast chicken recipe last winter and it’s seeing us through this one too. Nourishment is key 🔑 to sustain life. If you’re a lot like I am often times we feed our stomach more than we feed our brain 🧠. While I know the brain would not operate without the proper nutrition to our physical body. In order for our bodies to work at optimal levels, high performance nutrition is needed to do so. Just as higher end cars 🚗 require higher grade of fuels ⛽️. We must never forget to feed the computer that is our brain 🧠! It is so crucial to make sure that good goes in so good can come out. Today I make sure that the movies 🎥, T.V. Shows, and books 📚 are all something that is going to help me grow mentally. Just as I would watch my diet intake I have become just as conscious with what I allow my eyes and ears to hear. ¿Por qué #GiveAShit ? Sinceramente cuando algo es muy importante para ti, haces todo lo posible para que ello suceda. No hay poder u obstáculo que se interponga en tu camino. Ahora imagina transpolar ese deseo hacia cosas positivas como una vida más sana, un planeta más limpio, mantener relaciones más positivas, empleos que impacten en nuestra historia, tener más humanidad, etc. De eso se trata una transformación. Es un momento de reflexión profunda, dónde puedas llegar a todas aquellas cosas que hacen latir tu corazón. ¿Qué amas en la vida? Y, desde el amor, piensa cómo eso puede impactar en la vida de los demás, cómo los puedes ayudar y cómo ello puede convertirse en un movimiento. Tal vez físico, tal vez intangible. Si lo pensamos desde la física, el átomo es la partícula más pequeña conocida hoy en día. Un cuerpo se compone de un conjunto de átomos, que actúan en completa armonía, para hacer que funcione. ¿Qué pasaría si hacemos un cambio? #GiveAShit se trata de que cada pensamiento, acción y palabra venga desde el centro, desde el amor. Porque, a lo mejor es una acción muy pequeña pero hay miles de variables a nuestro alrededor vibrando y, con una sola que se impacten, se crea una ola de cambio. No somos entes aislados pero, a veces, así es cómo actuamos. ¡Vamos a vibrar en armonía para que todo funcione mejor! ¡Vamos, #GiveAShit !
¡Hora del té! Otoño es una estación del año ideal para iniciar una transformación interior. Para ello, es importante tomar un descanso para hacer las preguntas correctas y guiar nuestra vida hacia las respuestas que vayamos encontrando. Y, sinceramente, nada grita más a una pausa como la calidez de una taza de té recién hecha. La infusión puede estar hecha con hojas, flores y/o frutos, los que llena la boca un sabor ligeramente amargo. De manera casi transparente, una taza (o dos, o tres al día) resulta muy benéfica para la salud al contener L-teanina, cuya sustancia está relacionada con un estado de calma mental similar al que se encuentra en los practicantes de meditación. Además, entre sus componentes tiene vitaminas, cafeína (dependiendo el tipo de hierba), sales minerales, antioxidantes y otras propiedades que ayudan a prevenir enfermedades cardíacas y deterioro cognitivo. El té es una bebida especialmente apreciada en las primeras culturas del mundo siendo descubierta por los europeos hasta 1497 y se pone de moda en Londres hacia 1657, convirtiendo el hecho de "tomar el té" en una de las características de la cultura inglesa. Siempre he creído que las culturas más antiguas del mundo eran sabias conocedoras de la gastronomía. Ellas sabían usar de forma adecuada cada elemento para cada situación cotidiana. Por ello, me parece interesante leer que la enseñanza de la ceremonia del té, en Japón, se emplea con el objetivo de hacer la vida cotidiana más agradable, vivir en armonía en el cambio de las estaciones, crear mejores relaciones humanas y para adquirir buenas maneras. En conclusión puedo escribirles que el té es una muestra de hospitalidad en muchas culturas. Con esta palabra en mente y una taza de té en la mano, me gustaría aprovechar esta pausa de otoño para resolver una sencilla pregunta: ¿qué deseo hospedar en mi vida?
¿Qué ves aquí? 🔝 Más allá de la forma, un plato representa algo más que cerámica. En muchas culturas, la hora de la comida es símbolo de reunión entre familiares y amigos. Es un momento de placer para degustar la infinidad de colores y sabores que un platillo puede ofrecer. Para otras personas puede ser una pausa para continuar con el ajetreo diario, un momento a solas, un bocadillo sencillo. Un plato puede ser el símbolo de una cultura, una sociedad e, incluso, puede ser un objeto político. Para VIA BONSTATO, un plato es VIDA. Me atrevo a pensar que los colores, sabores y aromas son una invitación a un intercambio químico, de un cuerpo a otro, para transformarse en energía, que es lo que nos permite respirar, movernos, pensar, crear. De ahí la importancia de pensar: ¿qué hay en nuestro plato?, ¿de dónde viene lo que consumo?, ¿realmente beneficia a mi cuerpo? Hoy en día, cuando una persona habla de nutrición —en su mayoría— parece como si todos los cuerpos fueran iguales, un molde. También hay muchos que lo piensan desde una perspectiva estética y se olvida completo de la primera palabra con la que se debería asociar la nutrición: bienestar. El bienestar apunta a una calidad de vida. Es un camino que cada persona debe emprender con conciencia para escuchar a su propio cuerpo. Es una prueba y error constante. VIA BONSTATO es una iniciativa que busca dar información sobre los productos y sus beneficios para que tú hagas una decisión conciente sobre si un producto, receta, tendencia suma o no en tu cuerpo.
