Eighth album, Britney Jean. Now, if Femme Fatale had to grow on me with a few full album listens before I loved it, it took me a couple years to even hear Britney Jean in its entirety, let alone to like or respect any of its songs. In 2013, when the album came out, I was listening to less top40 pop and listening to a lot more of what I already loved, lots of oldies, lots of rock, and lots of conscious rap. And when I first heard Work Bitch, honestly, I was not impressed. I thought she had gone too EDM and auto-tuned, even though she has always been very produced, processed, and high-energy dance/pop music. It wasn’t until 2015 that I even decided to listen to this album at all. And I still wasn’t that impressed, but a few songs sounded really pretty. The top 5 songs are in my opinion the prettiest and most cohesive melodies and lyrics. Her vocals are pleasant and as recognizable as ever, but are also very processed and auto-tuned, more than on any other album so far. And that’s not always a good thing. But after I’ve now given the album several listens, it’s really not a bad album. It’s still very creative and has interesting qualities. Britney has always tried to make pop music that everyone can enjoy, I think. As many people as possible, despite how not everyone likes this genre, some hate it. But I think even a die-hard metal head could find at least one song on each Britney album that could appeal to them in some small way. I like her next album much better. More on that soon.
