Winter is a powerful time - a time to conserve our energy and resources. Special care needs to be taken in the form of nutrition, warmth and rest. Winter is a more inward and sensitive time. The climates of cold and wet (rain, snow, fog) chill us and require us to seek extra warmth and home time. In Holistic Nutrition, we tend to rely on traditional wisdom over newfangled technology for cold or flu prevention. . . One way we can keep healthy each winter is to make sure we are eating nourishing foods and drinking enough water, in the form of clean filtered drinking water, hot teas or soups. . Traditional Chinese Medicine suggestions for keeping balance during the winter time: . . ///Keep back energy loose and flowing through stretching exercises AND freely expressing your feelings . ///Increase your water intake (Feeling uninspired by plain water in this weather? Make it my fav, an herbal tea!) . ///Cook, steam or bake your vegetables ///Vegetable soups (like carrots, turnips, onions, garlic, ginger, cayenne) are right for winter - easy to digest, nutritious and warming. Soups are fantastic because we get nourishment from the foods in them, we're also getting that water intake! . ///Meat eaters, enjoy more protein now then you would in summer to "build the blood" (organic please!) . ///Fruits are less available locally, so they should form only a small part of our winter diet. These tend to make us colder. . ///Cooked whole grains (brown rice, millet, etc.) make an excellent winter staple, as these complex carbohydrates burn well in the body for fuel and are good for our intestines and elimination. If we pair our grains with vegetables or beans (red aduki beans, mung beans, black beans or lentils) we will have a complete protein. . ///Nuts are also good in the winter as a snack or in salads. . ///Cheese eaters: feta cheese from sheeps' milk is easier to digest and a bit better on your body to handle in the winter . . Drink water. Drink herbal tea. Take long baths. Rest.

#NUTRIENT_TIMING 🕑🕓🕘 There are certain times of day, depending on physical activity and goals, where it is more beneficial to include or exclude specific macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat). It’s important to remember that this will vary person to person (as usual). What will be similar for most people is including carbs after you workout. This is beneficial for recovery and nutrient replenishment💪🏼👌🏼 These nutrient timing recommendations can also change; based on what type of physical activity you are doing: 🔻 For a shorter-style anaerobic workout, we recommend mostly focusing on carbohydrates and a little bit of protein prior to the workout with protein, carbs, and a moderate fat amount post workout. 🔻 If the workout is longer and endurance-based, we recommend adding a little fat into that pre workout meal/snack to fuel the correct metabolic pathways and help you train harder. They live or die by the number that pops up. I try to help them realize it’s just one vital sign. One data point. It measures their gravitational pull to the earth. It does NOT measure who they are as a person or their self worth. This is easier said than done but keep talking with others who are supportive. It may help.

Why did I start? . I started when I was 19-20, I was about 70kg skinny fat, I have always been a fast sprinter but lucky enough to have good stamina but I was a skinny rake and it weren’t attractive and wanted to change my appearance. I wanted to look good. . This only lasted so long till I got a bit older and started seeing my older family become older. I said to myself that’s not going to be me, I’m not going to be over weight or driving myself to an early grave with bad habits. . Years later a little (well 9.5lbs) Bella-Amelia came into the world, now being the youngest in the family of my generation I didn’t really get a lot of active time with my parents and thought when I’m there age I still want to be able to run around with ease with good health. . Now it’s changed again now it’s I still want to be around to walk my daughter down the isle, to run around with the grandchildren, to live as long as I can and in the best health I can. . It will probably change again or become all of them. . I know people who loose sight of why they started to fall back into old habits or just give up. If it was easy in any aspect of life everyone would be there. . Find a reason, log it, get shit done, maintain or move to bigger better thing. . Happy Sunday, people forget Sunday is actually the start of the week not Monday but even a Friday isn’t to late.
