An important point in New York’s history since the 17th Century, The Battery is situated at the Southern tip of Manhattan. Initially named after the artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city’s early years for protection. When you are in the area visit Castle Clinton, the Hope Garden, the East Coast Memorial, the Sea Glass Carousel and enjoy a stroll facing the Upper Bay. Ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island leave from Battery Park.

This art-deco style skyscraper is the Chrysler Building. Completed in 1930 in the rush to claim the title of the 'tallest building in the world’, architect Van Alen even had the spire secretly constructed inside the building. It had only held the title for less than a year, when it was surpassed by the Empire State. However, it is regarded architecturally as one of New York’s, and America’s, finest buildings.
