2. Take note that diagnosis of a chronic disease can create a range of emotions for the individual. The response may range from anger to depression, particularly if other family members have suffered severe complications or died from the condition.
The role of the village is to provide education and support especially with the new diagnosis.
Avoid minimizing the emotional toll the individual is experiencing.
Acknowledge verbal concerns and observe changes in behavior.
Refrain from comparing the experience of the newly diagnosed with those currently living with the condition or that have died from it. (creates anxiety and sets psychological standards)
Help the individual focus on activities that will improve the condition.
Seek support groups in the area. If the individual expresses the desire to attend, ensure he/she is accompanied and has transportation.
If you observe psychological distress or an inability to cope offer professional counseling and ensure he/she has the resources to follow up.

Is obesity a disease or a lifestyle condition?

Obesity now affects over 17% of all children and adolescents in America and over 30% are considered overweight. This is three times HIGHER than the prevalence just one generation ago. When I got my first personal training certification it was so rare for children to get type 2 diabetes that it was actually named “adult onset diabetes”...only adults got it. How is this happening?? The answer is simple...look at their parents. Adult obesity has exploded due to poor eating habits and lack of activity therefore their children suffer the same fate. Although I feel tremendous empathy for parents as raising children can be very challenging especially when you include life stressors such as being a single parent, busy schedule, low income etc, its objectively clear that parents are to blame for their obese children. Kids don’t buy their own food. Kids learn their behaviors from their parents. 9/10 times obese children have obese parents.
