Ozette Triangle On the Pacific Coast of Washington is one of the more intimate, sublime, and textured coastlines I’ve ever experienced. The damp overcast March weather brought upon a feeling of closeness, an intimacy one might never feel on a more sun drenched coast. The small coastal rock islands and tide pools along side giant Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock which grow right up to the beach edge create so many micro ecosystems. Many of the old giants have also fallen and are slowly decomposing on the beaches. All this leads to a very different coastal interaction then I’ve experienced in other parts of the world.

A white breasted nuthatch!
It was a fearless bird. I remembered someone taking a photo with seeds in their outstretched hands and this bird gently pecking on it sitting on a human's hand. I stretched out my hand with no seeds and this guy sat on my hand to investigate. I deceived him but he was still curious and that's when I clicked this. The next time I visited I brought some bird feed with me but he was nowhere to be found.

Visited the Blue Ox Millworks in Eureka. In addition to doing historical reproductions of millwork and crafts education, they have a museum featuring a skid camp and an eclectic collection of manually powered machines. Well worth the visit. Standing in front of a redwood slab from a tree that was over 1,000 years old when it was taken down. I get the same mixed feeling of awe and saddness when I see pictures of the giant pines logged out of the Eastern forests.
I stumbled upon this #BFR
today in the #jamespeakwilderness
area. Truly awesome when you realize it rolled here from about 1/2 mile away after breaking loose high up on 13,291 ft #jamespeak
a gazzilion years ago. My picture doesn’t do this piece of rock justice. It’s a #monster
. Just sitting alone in the #oldgrowthforest
that is thankfully preserved as wilderness. I can’t imagine the force as this rock plowed through trees 8’ in diameter. #humbled #straightouttanature
Opal Creek, it’s been forever and you’re still amazing. So much fun being off the grid with the fam. #opalcreek #oldgrowthforest
are the best!
“Sit here with me and listen to the woods.
Did you know the trees can talk? They do.
They tell me all sorts of tales, for most have been here several hundred years and they have seen such things that we can't even imagine. Yes, they have spoken of the wild animals, the strange ones, and they have seen the things that made the huge boulders tumble from the ground. They have seen the floods that left these shells buried in the earth. And they can tell of people - your own ancestors. Put your arms around that tree as far as you can reach and listen ... What do you hear?"

Ancient Cedars of the Bruce. This is one of my favourite of the old growth cedars that I have found. It has a truck diameter of about 1 meter. The growth rings in cedar are about 10 per centimetre but as the tree slows in growth they can be as many as 20 or even more per centimetre. That places this tree at somewhere between 500 and 1000 years old. What makes this tree particularly unusual is that it growing very close to the waters edge. As if it is not precarious enough to survive on the cliff edge of the escarpment. This tree also has to deal with ice and storm waves. In it’s decay it is also supporting a birch, a spruce, and a balsam fir. #ancientcedars #ancientcedar #thosewhostray #brucepenisula #northernbrucepeninsula #easterncedar #oldgrowth #oldgrowthforest #smokeyhead #whitebluff #entsihaveknown
