When we bought this house I became obsessed with finding period furniture. And I mean obsessed. The hubbs is probably shaking his head in affirmation right now. Not a week went by that I didn't see something new that I..ABSOLUTELY...HAD...TO...HAVE....And then he put me on a budget (which I welcome because I am horrible with money...I mean horrible) and let me tell you, you guys, when you are on a budget you double and triple question every decision and think several times before you purchase an item. For example, I went to the architectural warehouse today and left with nothing because did I really love that pair of candelabras at 50% off? Why, yes, I did...but did they really bring me joy?? It's like walking around with a tiny Marie Kondo in my wallet....Anyway...before I was put in said budget I spotted this chair at the Salvation Army. It's not Victorian by any means, it's just a simple, relatively modern recliner but...BUT...look at the upholstery! Cigars and playing cards! I mentioned before, Mr. Minnich (the original owner) used to own a cigar factory, J.W Minnich and Son...and the library in the house was designed with card playing in mind. The shelves and fireplace have card suits carved in them and, we were told, there was a lot of gambling happening in this room, so how could I NOT purchase it?? This chair was meant to be in this house!! (And at less than $20 for a Lane recliner? Yes, please). So, I have come to the conclusion that, if it's meant to be, the right piece will find you...

Time for some old house love! This is our front door opening into the vestibule & interior front door. Don’t you love the original Florentine glass? It’s so ‘30s detective film noir despite our frou-frou Alice in Wonderland Front Door Crinoline Disclaimer. When I first saw this entry, being from sunny California & all, I didn’t understand the concept of a vestibule. A couple northern Michigan winters later, now I surely do. And I have HUGE APPRECIATION for the skills & foresight of one Charles E. Russell in designing our house in the late 1800’s. I mean, here I sit in my office. It’s 17 degrees out w/ felt temp of 2. Which is an improvement over yesterday’s -18 & the 4 subzero days we have to look forward to next week thank you very much. Yet, I’m dressed like its summer. Point being, our heating system has been updated from steam to water but it’s still the same architecture w/ the same radiators in the same rooms providing the same heat as they did 117 years ago in a large house w/ four stories from basement to attic. HOW’D THEY DO THAT? How’d they build big beautiful houses w/ tons of character & detail & stunning woodwork & mechanical systems that stand the test of time & keep generations of occupants warm & toasty against the most vicious elements known on this continent without computers, chop saws or extension cords & w/ horse-driven snow plows, dodgy electrical, bad or non-existent plumbing, outdoor loos, & few if any building codes? While wearing top hats ffs? Crazy crazy. Seems like our box builders today could learn some lessons from the hearty houses of our past.

...We may be currently residing in a #fifthwheel

Freezing temperatures and well pumps slowed down my weekend progress, but new kitchen window sill and trim in! .
...Because trimwork is therapy for me and everyone needs a proper sill over the kitchen sink😉 (just some staining and finishing to go).

Court St (1920) - the staircase on this quaint little home is 💥

Today's update was a quick and easy one. If I were making decisions about our bathroom remodel again, I would think hard about maybe installing some storage somewhere. It's always been a challenge trying to corral all of our toiletries here. I added a new basket for my taller hair care supplies and lotions and whatnot, and moved some of the towels out to the linen cupboard. Also, take a look at that difference in light between when I started and when I ended! These photos have been edited with the exact same steps, but the second picture is much brighter and warmer because the sun was coming up as I was cleaning.
🌿It’s time for another #52weeksofhome
post! This week is all about HARDWARE! Our simple farmhouse doesn’t have the elaborate pieces like other homes of its era, but we see the beauty in their simplicity. They were put in for function & durability. 128 years later, we are thankful that all the hardware on the doors & cabinets are original to the house, including a row of hooks in the upstairs hall that we will share once we finish the renovations of the stairway attached to it. This week’s challenge highlights some of the beauty that is hidden in historic homes & reminds us that the restoration process is so worth it.🌿
